Hi, I'm Uyen Ninh but please just call me Uyen!
I moved from Vietnam to Germany 3 years ago for studying. I make silly videos about how Germany looks like through the eyes of a Vietnamese student - on my way to be your favourite Ausländer! :D

Thanks to the internet i learned English and because i learned English it's easier for me to learn German (same language group). And scince my native language is Ukrainian I'm familiar with genders and cases (nom, akk...). So I'm very lucky. Can't imagine how hard this new language system is for native English speakers (why should table have a gender, right? 😂) and for Vietnamese i bet it's also really hard (I'm not familiar with this language, would be nice to know if it has any similarities with the ones i know)

@@idontreallylikelongnames As an English speaker, I'm familiar with gendered nouns from languages more commonly taught in the US (Spanish, French, Italian, etc). That part doesn't confuse me. Although remembering which ones are which... is another story. In Spanish at least nouns often have a or o at the end which signals gender. Your English is perfect by the way! Impressive learning it from the internet, but I suppose it must be something of a necessity because of how ubiquitous it is.

Hattest du schon mal Individualunterricht in Präsenz?

Now i think i'm pretty fluent (reading it), but i need about 5 to 10 minutes to adjust to the speaker to propperly understand them. not to mention: fo i learned english through reading, my pronounciation is HORRIBLE!!!! I'm learning Norwegian, which has a few words similar to German, but also a ton different. I'm used to three thirty is 'half past three', but in Norwegian (like in German) it's 'halv fire' aka 'half four'. It's hard to remember! There's also many words that sound similar to English, but many that are super different too. My mom was learning too and I think she was surprised when it started being less analogous because most of our early lessons sounded nearly like English. Also those sounds that aren't in your native language are really difficult! I'm doing ok with the Norwegian 'R' but I'm certain I'm doing the sound at the end of 'takk' or 'melk' wrong. I'm making the English 'ch' sound, but I don't think that's right, but I don't have anyone to speak to so it's the closest I'm going to get for now.

Actually, the German way of doing number order works in English, too (British and American). It's just very, old fashioned. We also have mpolite/impolite forms of address just like German-"you/you/yours" is polite and "thou, thee, thy/thine" is the impolite, which nobody uses...because it sounds old-fashioned, unless you're from Yorkshire.

When the german "ch" and "ä, ö, ü" trouble you, be glad you're learning "just" standard-german and not swiss-german. 😃 Kukumber is correct too - admitted, it's not very common in standard-german, but in a lot of german dialects, people also use/know "Kukumber" for "Gurke". Numbers can be somewhat strange in german - but not nearly as strange as in french: 99 -> EN: Ninety-nine, DE: Neun-und-Neunzig (Nine-and-Ninety), French: Quatre-vingt-dix-neuf (four-twenty-ten-nine)
