These style brakes used to irk me as a kid and cost me one of my fave bikes as a kid. We were poor so a trip to the bike store for a fix was a no. Bought a used Specialized bike at 42 and this video just now helped me more than anything I’ve seen on YT. I’m mechanically inclined and cars aren’t difficult for me, but v brakes were the bane of my existence. Glad I found your video!🎉

one thing which is very important is to make sure the springs inside are getting hit by the small tension screws.if not when you try to balance to two arms one arm wont beable to adjust .This happened to me.i took it apart and realligned the spring.

Hello Bikeman,I just adjusted my V Brakes and I found if I put my V Brake arms back on the studs that have the 3 holes, and chose the top hole instead of the middle hole to locate the wire of the brake arm, I got allot more tension without having to bend the tensioner wire as you suggested. But I also found on some brake arms there are also different holes to choose on the inside of the arm mechanism. Could you add another video going over this. And explain what holes do what in how the brakes work? Which locations are best choice for the best braking. I would appreciate the update. Thank you very much!

i always use the middle to start, if you still dont have enough spring tension, try the top one.

I have a problem. My brake levers are tight but my brakes are rubbing on the frame. I loosen the screw on the springs all the way on both sides a bit and nothing happens. When the noodle is in the housing it is too hard to disengage and remove the tire. I have a quick release. If I pull the cable to give it more slack and tighten it so the noodle comes out of the housing easily the brake level touched the handle bars( too loose). What do I do? Am I missing something? Is it ok to have the barrel on front brake tighter than the back brake?

my bike mechanic friend adjusted them once and showed me how but at that time i was running bontrager low profile hybrid tires on my mountain bike ,, then i switched back my other 26 inch rims with the maxxis tires and the brakes started rubbing ,, is it just a matter of readjusting brake pads

how come when i took my urban street tires off my mtb and went back to my mountain bike tires my v brakes rub ,, is the tire rubbing on the pad ... im thinking yes because of the wider profile

Not sure if you'd be able to reply, but - I have a Mongoose 2.1 ledge(yes i know, cheap bike) but it's my "first" mountain bike, and I've recently gotten into downhill. But that's besides the point, my front brakes have recently been screwed up. I have the wheel off and the brakes are not centered and pull wayyyy too much to the left side(view from sitting on bike)and I took the little screw(the one you mention at 1:40 the fine nut) to adjust the tension out, and now can't get it back in,(i guess the spring is loose?) it just slides in and out, doesn't "lock' like the other side does. Please help! Appreciate it.

lromeroyt haha wow I remember this! Well, I was able to get it fixed, I took it to my local bike shop and they charged me $20 total, pretty good deal considering they also trued the wheel. But I no longer have my mongoose 2.1, a few weeks ago I bent the front rim and it would of cost $150, so I said hey might as well get a new bike. I purchased a Diamondback Sorrento for $400, an awesome bike with GREAT tires and a great hardtail frame for pretty much everything.. So to answer your question, I would take it to a bike shop, or if you have the money, buy a better bike to last longer.

Haralabos Lukatos adjust the spring tension screws until both arms pull together in unison :)

undo the bolt that holds the v brake arms clean & re grease the post & the mounting points on the v brake arms themselves (they can get very grubby & dirt can make them stick) the spring end should be placed on the centre hole (if your bike has 3 holes/some only have 1,if this doesn't help,might be a better idea to send me some pics so i can see what's going on,happy to help u further if required :)

What i have seen is working some times is i put the spring in the top hole. In the middle hole some times is feel weak the spring. Yesterday i see one road bike genesis $149 do you know anythink about that bikes. I mean quality if is worth i buy one?

are the springs damaged?,bent/twisted?,that might be the problem,compare them to another spring from another bike that has ok ones,if they don't look visibly similar maybe it's stretched & needs to be replaced,a good bike shop mechanic should be able to tell u if theyr'e ok or need to be replaced the upper/lower holes make the spring tighter/loose but most are fitted in the centre hole,it's personal preference but just make sure that u locate the spring in the same hole on both sides so that they are even,also might be a good idea to replace the inner brake cable,this may help with the sticking problem u mentioned,also check the outer cable too if it's bent the cable will bind & make it harder to shift plus premature cable breakage could occur from wear,i have seen genesis bikes on the net but i haven't seen any around here in melbourne (australia) perhaps google search? or join a forum & ask their opinions,if u buy a second hand bike be sure to check it over fully & ride it before buying,beware of department store bikes as they are poorly made & assembled,i bought a second hand huffy mtb & the cranks & head tube were a little loose,i recomend that u buy a quality bike but if your budget doesn't allow it,keep saving up some money until u can get something nicer,some shops will allow u to pay it off in instalments,hope this helps,feel free to add me on google+ if u need future help,neil :)
