Well done for the starting motor. Consider that some starting cables have a big voltage drop due the poor aluminium cables instead copper One. For the voltage drop consider: connection surfaces as big and clean as possibile . Crocodile CLAMP they have a small contact surfaces. Even with the original connection, take care the connection are well clamped on the copper wire. Some oil or Grease contaminating the copper can affect the connection and drop voltage..Best Is to tin weld them . Have fun
Well done, interesting thing, but the starter still feels to run hard... I think you should do an engine check, rings, seals etc..., then reassemble everything and enjoy. =) Usually it smokes when burning oil if the rings leak or are stuck, also a check to the ignition and electrical, contacts, a bit of everything and should be ok. I've noticed there is some corrosion on the bolted joints, so it could be also a problem. Sounds pretty nice though. Cheers, keep on!
I would do a proper maintenance of the motorcycle and just start riding it. I would suggest that the white smoke is probably either a slightly rusty cylinder from sitting a long time, or as you suggested, sticking rings. Either problem will clear up with running. It may also be a carburetor issue, which will also probably clear up by itself with some running time. My BMW motorcycle smokes terribly if I leave it sit for a while- oil runs into the combustion chambers past the rings (horizontal engine). It is the nature of motorcycles to get cranky when they sit unused.
