I remember this game when I was young. My mother bought it and I started playing it and was yelling at the tv "It's losing the sensitivity". My mother thought i meant there was a problem with the actual game cartridge and said "Don't worry son, we'll go down the store and get another copy". I was trying to explain to her that it was the actual game that had bad sensitivity and not anything wrong with the game cartridge but she still insisted on changing the game cartridge at the video game store. I remember holding up the controller with clearly the left joystick left and showing the car isn't even turning left.

The main menu screen was the most visually spectacular graphical aspect of this game. The Rally Escort was shown photorealistically, which surprised me considering the hardware for which it was produced. Then again, Windows 98 hadn't been out that long, so maybe I was a little underwhelmed *at the time,* but with hindsight, can certainly appreciate the N64's hardware capabilities now. If only software could be produced with this photorealistic imagery in-game, the appeal of the machine would certainly see a resurgence. More so than its disc-based rivals with their slow loading times anyway...

Still best N64 channel. Thanks! I cannot even tell you how awesome N64 Magazine was. I only disagreeded few things with the magazine. Mostly: They said that getting all platinums would be hard to get in Blast Corps, probably impossible. It wasnt THAT bad. :) Also Shadows of the Empire got worse score than it deserved. It was first unique Star Wars adventure ever made and superb. Sure there was Star Wars shooters around, like that Doom clone Dark Forces, but the movies were adventure movies, not action. N64 reviewed it as an FPS game, more than it was.

Hey Glenn, good to see a new video! I'm playing thru Top Gear Rally at the moment and having fun with it but it's sure tough once you get a few seasons into Championship mode! One thing both of the games seem to share is the somewhat unpredictable handling. I have also had a few rageful moments with clipping an obstacle and having my car go flying out of control (on the final lap of an otherwise flawless race). This game definitely doesn't look as good and sounds like it doesn't play as good either. Thanks for the heads up! Now I know to pu this game low on my list of priorities for completing the N64 collection

Hey N64 Glenn Plant. You live in Europe, right? What do you think of the PAL vs NTSC difference when it comes to N64 games? Do you have US copies of your games or European ones? In your F-zero X video you mentioned blistering 60 fps. Unfortunatelly in Europe we didn't get to experience that because of the 50hz lock. Should we care? What do you think? I personally tend to collect NTSC copies of the games that I'm interested in but when I have a chance to get a game for cheap I usually get no matter if it's a PAL or NTSC copy and probably that's why I ended up with multiple copies of the same game (one being a European copy and one being an American copy).
@n64glennplant8 жыл бұрын
i think fzero is worth playing the ntsc version...its so much of a difference that if you play the ntsc version you'll basically be learning a whole new game again as the extra speed really makes a difference

I’m going to differ with both the review, and with many comments. IMHO, this is one of the best racing games for the N64 (not the best, that would be World Racing Championship for me). Most N64 racing games have roads with wall-like borders where your car simply bounces like if nothing happened (and I’m sorry, but if road borders don’t have consequences, that’s not a racing game, but a toy). Also, IMHO, the graphics in V-Rally are in the top 5 for racing games in the N64, it really looks like a realistic race unlike most of the N64 games of the time (the most lacking point would be that the cars don’t have reflections, which is a pity, but then many N64 games did’t have cars with reflections either). Said this, I agree V-Rally could have been greatly improved with just a little effort: the crazy flying after a crash, the exaggerate penalty of slightly hitting a tree, the way the joystick behaves (even if this gets better when you set the sensibility to low)… all of this is a pity because the game would have been a 10/10 with just a little work. And yes, I admit it took time to get used to its controls, but once you got it, it’s quite rewarding.

I just tried this recently. Basically I was using emulation to test every racing game I could find on the N64. I'm not a huge fan of rally games and I find the co-pilot voice in such games annoying. No other other type of racing game has this, so why should rally games? I know, it simulates how it's done in real life. I still find it annoying and would rather turn it off, something which few games allow. As for this game, I didn't think it was great, but I kind of liked it for one trivial reason: The default view, which is pulled back more than most racing games, gives me the impression of racing scale model cars on a large tabletop layout. I found it kind of charming.
@n64glennplant3 жыл бұрын
What was your fav racing game you tested?
@lurkerrekrul3 жыл бұрын
@@n64glennplant Well, kind of a cop-out, but my favorite racing game was probably Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. I also liked California Speed, but that's an arcade port, not an original game. Also, I thought the three Rush games were well done (even if I can't win a single race), but they're also arcade ports. For non-arcade ports, I'd say probably Beetle Adventure Racing. I liked that the tracks had alternate routes and that the powerups all seemed beneficial rather than weapons the other racers could use against you. I was never a fan of NASCAR, formula 1 or kart racers, so while I didn't think those games were horrible, they didn't appeal to me much. I also tend to go for more arcade style racers rather than simulation type games. Some of the games didn't work for me. I couldn't get Micro Machines, Stunt Racer or World Driver Championship to work at all. Top Gear Hyper Bike and Top Gear Overdrive both had severe graphical glitches.

By '99, the DC version was clearly superior :/ Nice that we got this though, either way.

got to love the DC for the best ports of some of the games of the time

Indeed. Glenn, I wish I knew you back in the N64 heydays, your channel brings back a ton of memories. Keep up the good work matey

I had this back in the day. it was enjoyable but very twitchy in the control department. easy to have the car steer overly tight for no reason and hit a barrier, costing you the race. inconsistent steering is its worst crime.

yeah even with tweaking the settings i could never find something i was 100% without the 4wd cars were a mess to handle so best avoided in my opinion

I remember this game giving me horrific migraines and I could barely play for more than 20 minutes at a time. It was a pretty poor racing game though and even worse than its PS1 counterpart.

Very obscure game. I'll pick it up if I find it cheap enough. Like 6 bucks.
@n64glennplant5 жыл бұрын
Shouldn’t cost you more than that

The V-Rally series of games really was the poor mans Colin McRae Rally in every way. Pity the N64 didn't get any of the games from the series of the latter.

Nice work, Sir! Next make Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask! Masterpieces of N64!

I also used to like a lot racing games. The N64 had the best racing games. But nowadays none of them catch my attention, they became so complex, I mean, why can't we have games like San Franciso Rush or Beetle Adventure Racing anymore?

Aah V-rally... I wanted so badly for this to be good... I picked it up at a local toy store back in the day for dirt cheap. I played it lots, but never really got anywhere in the game. I even bought a steering wheel and peddals from Woolworths when they were clearancing them out for £9,99, believing this would make the game more playable... Allas... This is the game that proved to me that I'm more of an arcade racing fan than simulation. Having said all that, I did also pick up V-Rally 2000 on Game Boy Color after reading some good reviews and I have to say, for a Game Boy Color game, it was a blast to play! :-)

good ole woolworths hey, the amount of games they just slashed the price of so quickly was always awesome

Was going to buy but this looks pretty bad. I can't believe how bad some of these looked at the N64 yet we see people complaining about anything it get released these days 😂

You're truly missing out by being anti-emulator. Full HD, FSAA, anisotropic filtering, hi res texture packs, control ambiguity, etc, would blow your mind. I wish I could hang out with you and show you the wonder of PJ64 on good PC hardware, set up correctly. Accuracy is extremely high contrary to purist belief.
@n64glennplant6 жыл бұрын
Oh I’m not anti emulator, there’s some cool emulator only stuff knocking around. But I personally prefer real hardware and can almost always tell the difference with emulator vs hardware for N64

Am I the ONLY one who can't see ANY difference with the Ultra HDMI modded N64? The video quality looks pretty much the same as with the regular composite cables and feels like there has ben 0 improvements made to the quality of the videos and that we just waited like 8 months for nothing. -_-
@n64glennplant8 жыл бұрын
all my previous videos were in svideo (spook cable) and i agree thats the best standard n64 solution (aside from rgb but i personally dont see enough of a jump to get it done). As for Ultra HDMI some games pick it up more than others, check out my livestreams when i next do one where i record in 4:3 ratio raw from the console and you'll probably see a greater difference

V-Rally 99 is the worst racing game I have played on N64, I gave my copy to my sisters boyfreind, even Top gear Rally 2 is better. But on Playstation V-Rally 2 is a must own.
