This is beyond amazing. Loving your procedural workflow, there's so much flexibility to it!
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
Once you go procedural you never go back. 🙂I normally don't find any need to do any unwrapping and don't like to substance painter/designer but prefer to do a similar kind of workflow directly in VRay

CTRL+drag the node on to the spline, so you dont need to individually pipe the splines in to the node. maybe you already knew that, and did it this way for demonstration purposes :) Good tuts as always. cheers and keep 3ds max alive......... ehm i mean vray. ( I think it is drag first and then push CTRL )

Fantastic video again mate! I would love it if you could show how to add a Vray Decal on top to make it also look worn down and chipped with the same bump etc?
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
I think Vray decal would work better on less complex surfaces. Here it would probably be stretched across all those gaps and details in the geometry and I think you would get a better result just by using curvature or AO

Hi Jonas, can you explain vray camera's Field Of View, Film Gate and Focal Length? What are the relationship of these settings to each other, and how can this be related to an actual camera - im confused on this. -anyway, your videos are always super super helpful 😊

GENIUS!
@andreasmass44922 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial! I've been using this method for many years. Although with the VrayDirt map instead of curvature. I still find VrayDirt a better option because I find it more intuitive and easier/faster to manipulate organically. Mostly with just one texture in the radius slot (and adjusting output curve for the right contrast). And a VrayColor map for the occluded color where you increase the RGB value in case the resulting mask is not bright enough. Long gone are the days of Grant Warwick's Mastering Vray... Weiter so und beste Grüße!
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have another tutorial in my channel that covers exactly the VRayDirt workflow. It's called Rusty Metal Shader tutorial, you can check this out to compare this to your workflow :-) I like use both V-Ray Dirt and Curvature. They have different usecases for me, for example in animations the VRayDirt may behave weird if other objects suddenly move by closely and interact with it. The Curvature just depends on its own geometry so it's more suitable for animations as it doesn't depend on the objects position and it's position to other objects in the scene.
@andreasmass44922 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell I see! But VrayDirt map has the "Consider Same Object Only" option built in so you could make it behave the same when needed. In fact I find the ability to use both very flexible. For example you can leave this option off so VrayDirt interacts with with all other objects. And then the exclude/include list can be used to further specify which objects in the scene affect it and which don't. To be exact there are two exclude/include lists, one for which objects receive VrayDirt at all and one for which objects have an influence on it. There have been many instances where I used this. Just recently for example to generate dirt/sand on car wheels. So you would take advantage of the tire object and rim object interacting and the crevices between them gathering dirt but exclude the car body etc. But having said all that, it only matters what works for each person better and feels more intuitive. For this kind of setup the curvature option might be more interesting (for me) if maybe it's considerably faster than VrayDirt. But I haven't tested the speed between the two directly yet... if it is it might be a better option on scenes with many multi level shaders like these. In the end the biggest slow down though is the fact that Vray always computes all the layers of the blend mtl. Once you have a model with many of these blend mtls you will notice how slow things get during render time. But hey, quality over speed! :D
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
@@andreasmass4492 Yeah the thing with the blend material is unfortunately annoying. For animations or when rendertime matters I normally try to built all of this into one VRayMtl. It's a bit more complex and annyoing to mask out different Glossiness, Metalness, Bump, IOR and so on in the same shader but it's possible and speeds up the overall rendering. I would wish that the BlendMtl would act the same way because it would be much more clean and intuitive to keep those shaders separated.
@andreasmass44922 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell Yeah, it would be great if they actually managed to "bake" the composite right before rendering instead of calculating all layers. I mean hey, we got a sheen option in the vraymtl now instead of having to use blend mtl and shellac mode. That's a start, right? 😅

I’m a VFX Compositor but I’m also learning lighting, shading and rendering. Thanks so much for taking your time to share this knowledge, much appreciated, my materials and shaders in CG have gotten better since I found your page. My question is; Is there a way to include a mask in cryptomatte for decals, cause I used V Ray Decals but the decal doesn’t show ip in the cryptomatte channel. I use Cinema 4D.
@JonasNoell Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback :-) As for the cryptomatte if you switch it to separate by material it should be working. At least it does for me in 3ds Max. In Cinema 4d I'm not sure. If it doesn't work and you think it is a bug you can ask in the support forums for C4D.

Very nice is the output map necessary even if it's already implemented into vray curvature? thank you
@JonasNoell2 жыл бұрын
It depends, in my case I wanted to clamp the output AFTER I multiply several textures on top of the curvature. If I would clamp the output in the curvature node the result would look different in this case.

When it comes to tutorials, I've seen very few OPs that direct you to a "free" patreon site, only to find that just about any content, including the scene files to the tutorial are only available with a PAID subscription. You seem to know what you are doing, but your site is a bit deceiving as there is virtually nothing free with one of your "FREE" accounts. Loosen up and give us a taste before charging for everything.
