It's not a video. The person is actually backstage wearing mocap gear so their movements are captured on the screen. That's how they can interact with the audience, and why it's not "animated well". Swell Entertainment made a video about her experience going to a Vtuber concert, and she even met one of them backstage after the show because they were a fan of hers.
@theendblock102
@theendblock102 Жыл бұрын
This instance really didn't look like a mocap thing, though. It kinda just looks like a normal 2d model and tracker. Obviously a 3d model and full mocap suit isn't in the cards for smaller v-tubers and probably wasn't really warranted for a small concert at a larger convention, but i feel like it would have definitely been an improvement if that's what it was.
@ScoutOlson
@ScoutOlson Жыл бұрын
I honestly just said mocap gear because Kurtis wasn't gonna know what I was talking about if I said "2d model and trackers". The production kawaii show that Swell went to was a 3D show, so mocap suits there seem more appropriate.

Some context for people wondering if people actually spent $300 to see this concert: The concert wasn't $300. It's 300 in the Thai Bhat which is about $10 USD. The 300 Thai Bhat/$10 USD was the entry price to enter the event or convention and the mini concert was free. EDIT: Kurtis explained that he looked into it and saw the correct info. All's good!

kurtis should totally do a video about / with vtubers because a lot of them seem like very cool and nice people who just want to use a virtual avatar online! and the cons with vtuber events especially help disabled people like ironmouse or people with bad anxiety to be able to “meet” their fans without physically being there. also seems very much safer for vtubers as well to not be there in person. the concert video is pretty odd and seems low budget but there have been other vtuber concerts / shows that have really high production value and look way nicer lol.

Dacapo's model is actually very high end and I would consider the animation as being very well done. The issue here is that vtuber models are simply not intended for performances like this, they focus on the facial expressions and head movements which is good for stuff like streaming. This is why corporate vtubers will have a 3d model for concerts where you can actually see arms and legs moving freely. But as you can imagine custom 3d models will cost a lot and it's a really big investment

I haven't been to any vtuber live events, but I went to the Bungou Stray Dogs panel thing with Asagiri at anime expo, and we got to see the first episode of season 5. It's basically the same thing, we were watching it on a screen and everyone would scream when certain characters showed up or well, literally anything happened. But it was really really fun so I can understand why people would like vtubers doing it (even though it's different) since you get to be with a bunch of other fans and the experience is cool.

Vtubers are just like regular streamers, the only difference being that they stream using animation, so they pretty much do everything that regular streamers do. I met Luxiem from Nijisanji EN at a comic con and they were very cool and sweet. Vtubing can be a little cringey to anyone who isn’t used to it, I think. And just like anyone else, sometimes Vtubers can be cringey individually. Similarly to Kpop, I think people make fun of it simply because they make their assumptions about it. It’s really not as different or weird as people think it is. As for why people like it so much, I think that just has to do with the mystery of it. We don’t know who these people really are, so there’s a level of curiosity about them. They’re animated, fantastical characters that, unlike fictional animated characters, can communicate with their fans and display individual creativity and talent all while remaining anonymous. Like, you’re not just looking at an animated image, you’re looking at something that someone put lots of time, energy, heart, and creativity into. Personally, as an individual with autism, I find content made from Vtubers more easy to digest than regular streamers. Tbh, if any of the Vtubers I’ve seen were to see this video, they would probably laugh along with Kurtis and probably agree with him lol

Just think of vtubers as normal streamers who chose to keep there face anonymous, they’re not rlly that different (also think of algorythm project as an agency for vtubers pretty much) the way the vtuber model moves is actually rlly high quality for a 2D model, he must have payed a lot for it

Hmm, glad the pricing info was corrected at least. Still, the person behind the vtuber avatar wasn't sitting on his ass; he was behind the stage, actually singing with his model onscreen. I think it's okay to think the model movements are funny and awkward, just seems kinda mean spirited to imply that this guy didn't put in work for his performance. As for the comment about vtubing as potentially the future of live performance, I think that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Too much work for the rigging, tech set up, etc for broader venues. Is it really so hard to believe that live person performances and vtuber performances can coexist without nerfing each other?

Vtuber concerts can vary in quality and scale, especially depending on the company, for example indie or s all company vtubers often put on smaller scale performances using just a 2d model, but bigger companies like hololive can put on large scale conventions with concerts. For really good vtuber concerts, I'd recommend watching either one of Hoshimachi Suisei's concerts Shout in Crisis or STELLAR into the Galaxy, or the performances at holofes, particularly Hakoz Baelz and Gawr Gura's performance of Sweet Appetite, or Takanashi Kiara's performance of Hinotori, her entire birthday concert too, that girl is one hell of a performer and amazing to watch.

For sensible vtuber fans it doesnt really matter what the vtuber looks like irl, we like their personality, their talent, and the way their model looks. Its a design that we enjoy looking at and thats it. Dacapo, the vtuber who did that concert has a model that has his eyes covered most of the time, but he still looks pretty and handsome when his eyes are showing, but from what I know thats rare, so fans get excited when he shows his eyes. I also think because his eyes are covered a lot its even harder to read his expressions through the model, so when he shows his eyes hes more expressive, which is also something fans would be excited about. The way the model moves isnt Dacapo's fault either. Vtubing is a lot more limiting than real life, theres a lot less things you can do, and if you Do want to do more, its extremely costly. Getting a 3D model thats able to track someone's entire body movements cost So Much Money, money that Dacapo doesnt have since he isnt *that* big. I understand how the concert looks silly and stuff but i dont know if its fair to poke fun at it when someone doesnt understand the way it fundementally works. (Also idk in Dacapo's case during the concert but a lot of the time when vtubers do panels they *can* actually see the audience thru a camera or by being there in person but in secret). Also everyone's already said it about the price so i wont touch on that, it was free to see thats it. I think even though i agree its okay to poke fun at things, the thing with Dacapo got way out of hand. People should just let others enjoy the things they enjoy (as long as it doesnt harm anyone) even if they dont get it, cos at the end of the day, the concert wasnt for you! It was for his fans, and they clearly enjoyed it so why make fun of that?

While most people don’t think of watching a vtuber in a concert venue is any different from watching them on your phone at home, it makes a big difference to fans. Compare it to watching a movie in your living room as compared to a theater, or watching your favorite KZbinr at home versus at a live show. For people wondering why the movement looks goofy, its because its a flat image that someone has to warp to make it able to move. Some are way better at turning to show a 3/4ths or side profile but thats rare and costs a fortune. The best models like that cost 7,000 USD and up. Standard rig like what Dacapo has is still 1,000 USD (plus more for all the toggles like the hair adjustment and sad mouth). For a small time agency in Thailand, it's a good quality model and rig. But those are the limitations of trying to animate a flat image, it'll never look as good as real motion or a 3D model. It's a great medium for self expression and anonymity, don't write it off just because you don't understand it.

Hey, I don't know much about these Vtuber concerts, but anyone who doesn't know much about Vtubers just know that not all of them use avatars for the same reason. I started doing Vtubing because of a facial deformity that I have. It not only helps my confidence on screen but stops others from asking about it or just being rude. It's also just a fun way to be interactive with your audience as a persona without really having to worry about what people will think of you on camera. Plenty of Vtubers also use motion capture suits to move their avatars, so it was likely what these vtubers were doing at the concert. It probably wasn't them just sitting at home with a live feed or anything. Like I said, don't know anything about the concerts, but that's just a guess.

I know Kurtis acknowledged he was incorrect about some of the vtuber stuff, but to answer some Qs he posed 1) Most likely the screaming and excitement had more to do with being there in a group, like when people cheer and clap in Marvel movies etc 2) The excitement about the 'reveal' stems frim the hype that vtubers put into debuts for models, or assets, or new outfits bc the art and rigging for them to be animated from motion capture is a very tedious process and costs lots of money and takes months 3) For one of the particular vtubers he showed IronMouse (the girl with pink hair) she has severe health issues so her being able to attend an 'in person' gathering with fans of hers like that is actually a huge deal bc she can't travel or anything. And she also happens to be a highly trained singer, so when she performs it is actually cool bc she is good for real--but for sure some people just like certain vtubers because it's a hot anime person you can kind of 'talk' to, but I like to think most 'big names' people just like because they're a cool person. I don't actually watch a lot of vtuber content, I'm a digital artist so I follow vtuber artists online mostly so feel free to add in comments if I got anything wrong or missed something

As someone who has paid for an embarassing number of Thai live shows (for BL . . .), I am not even remotely shocked about VTubers being huge over there, or having cons/liveshows lmao. Do I think this is cringy? A bit. But no more so than the ones I pay for. It's just something people like to do with friends that share their same interests.

@KittyWhite38 it's usually a variety show featuring the cast from the series. They reenact some scenes live as well as perform scenes that weren't in the show. And then there's lots of musical and dance numbers lmao, even if the actors can't really sing. Sometimes they'll do a show that's basically an AU fanfic, where the theme of it is completely different from the original show (OhmFluke did one themed around them being secret agents, but their original show is happy meloncholy slice of life reincarnation).

For phones not charging, particularly iPhones, it's def worth taking a look in the port with a light. It's not uncommon for pocket lint and stuff to get compacted in there. I've found a toothpick works well, right size and not conductive. Otherwise, you can try to make sure the contacts are clean. A qtip with 90% isopropyl alcohol works well. I'd turn your phone off for this, but the isopropyl won't damage circuits or anything

The Vtuber stuff... For me, the live stream Q&A is fine... What gets me is the concert. Like, you can just watch one of their karaoke live streams bc all the singers do that. ALSO PLEASE REMEMBER! The people behind the anime avatars are real people and it is live, not a recording. That's kind of why the screaming happens, right? A prefomer they like is preforming live, in person or not. People don't fuckin' scream when you see a Markiplier phone case or whatever, right...? Because the phone case isn't that persona and that persona isn't right in front of them. It's also the reason the "animation" is bad. Because it's not pre-animated. It's a face tacker. Some people value privacy and that's okay. Sitting behind a character is not cringe and sometimes it's even easier to entertain with a mask. Ngl, I'm disappointed in how closed minded people are when it comes to Vtubers. It's all the same... they just aren't showing their face. I'm not even a huge Vtuber fan and I totally fuckin' understand this. I have severe anxiety and pretending as a character sounds way more appealing than pretending with my own face.

Not bashing people that like vtubers but they can't expect people to not laugh or poke fun at it. Also be careful what vtuber you poke fun at. You can actually meet the members behind the avatars themselves. They are present and singing on stage, but the footage that we took must be kept private and sometimes we arent allowed to record at all, unless its for "open" utaitte like Amatsuki, Uratanuki, Aho No Sakata, Shima, Senra etc..or we have permission to post the person's faces. Most of the footages that contains their faces are from their official channels.I thought it would be the same with other vtubers' concerts. I didn't expect for it to be like this

As a 25 year old Vtuber, I can say things a pretty chill and it's not as weird and complicated as people make it out to be. As long as you stay in the right circles things can be pretty fun and cool! But some people take shit way too seriously and need to chill out, especially the "idol" side of things.
@nomoretwitterhandles

"as long as you stay in the right circles..." you mean echo chambers? That's the whole problem with the vtuber community; if you're not in the giant toxic echo chamber of the general fanbase, you're in tinier, cliquey-er echo chambers of people who are just as toxic in different ways. I used to be a vtuber and no matter where I turned, there was nonstop toxicity and narrow-mindedness. It didn't matter how many people I blocked or how many people I ignored, there was always toxicity in the vtuber community. After retiring from vtubing I've never felt better in my life. Vtubing itself is completely harmless and it's a good way for people to hide their identities in a fun and entertaining way, and I fully support it. But the community is ass. Nobody could pay me ENOUGH to come back.

Anecdotally also had some extremely toxic experiences with a few vtubers I've worked with, and one of them is still pretty relevant in the vtuber community sadly. @@nomoretwitterhandles Sorry to hear you had it bad. Basically all I do is just stream and talk with the people who enjoy the same things as I do. I don't know if that counts as an "echo chamber" but I still have fun. The only time I ever feel the need to block someone is if they are harassing me or a friend of mine or spamming. The circle's I'm in are very accepting of everyone, all people have to do is not be bigoted towards LGBTQIA+ people (I'm trans) and don't be racist. Other than that, anyone is welcome to chill with me and my friends on stream. Again though, I'm sorry to hear things went badly for you as a vtuber. v-tuber concerts just kinda remind me of vocaloid concerts except its a real person behind the screen instead of a fully digital pop star. i would imagine its a fun experience. im not into v-tubers but i would LOVE to go to a hatsune miku concert. Everyones so hyped and excited, everyone has the same interests (like the few times ive been to anime conventions around 2011) and at those times it was the best experiences ive ever had, everyone was just as nerdy as me and everyone just showed so much love and it felt like being surrounded by people who would never judge you (though with the way anime has just kept gaining in popularity and how much animosity between anime fans ive seen just online i wouldnt be so sure about that anymore lol). But anyways, I dont think its gonna be the 'future of entertainment' because vocaloid has been around for years and years and the vast majority of music being produced is NOT vocaloid lol vocaloid is still very much niche.

hoping this is the start of kurtis getting a vtuber guest on his channel! because genuinely i never thought i'd get into them myself either but they just are a fun source of entertainment cringe but free lmao), with a greater level or detachment and more fantasy (bc vtubers are fictional characters where the creators write stories/lore for them) than watching people on camera record themselves. and ofc going to a convention and surrounding yourself with other fans hypes up that excitement - often the vtubers can see the crowd through cameras and interact so its basically like a virtual meetup. the level of sophistication of the animation is all do do with the models rigging - good rigging that reacts to body movement/facial expressions is pricier - so i believe the singing vtuber guy in this is a indie artist that doesn't come from a larger company with more funds as far as i've heard? its a fun world which i think is only just becoming more popular in the west, as in places like japan where virtual art has been a big thing for longer - like vocaloid - it's nothing new!

I’m not sure why the eyeball thing is so weird to people/Kurt… I have no clue who that vtuber is but could imagine easily (since it was out of context and we’re not apart or deep in that world) that maybe that vtuber never has shown their eyes before and they’ve been around for year and years. Imagine like a cartoon character that does the same. We never saw and. Bellum’s face from Power Puff Girls, or got the Krabby Patty secret recipe… I immediately imagined this vtuber scenario being similar. It’s live and yes the concert bit they’re not talking directly to anyone but I think you hit the nail on the head, that it’s an experience with the energy in person. I like Ironmouse and I’ve seen two or three others I tune into every once and awhile and there’s a bit of work that goes into vtubing too I hear! You have to really exaggerate movements sometimes to make the model look seamless, changing up the reactions to match what you’re talking about… I think it’s neat to be able to chill behind your vtuber, and I’d be curious to try it someday. I think the world is interesting!
