I wouldn't be surprised if the new/my generation can find fun in EV's, with similar appreciation for its own type of feel and experience. After all, in the same metaphor used in the video, smoking was (and still partially is) part of a nice or succesful social experience, but plenty of people are just as content without the smoking. @Patrick Bai EV's will never be lightweight!! Weight is the enemy on cars, in terms of handling and feel. Caterhams, Ariel and Lotus have not just the best handling but also feel connected due to their lack of weight. I know it's coming but I don't have to like it. Save your EV for your Tesla not the fun cars!

The Top Gear segment that was referenced actually brought me to tears. It was so moving. Just hearing the music put me right back there. Well done on referencing and emulating that segment. Also for fixing BMW's error and making that M5 a true driver's car. I agree too that we are seeing an era come to an end, but weirdly that no longer saddens me. These beasts of our obsession will only be all the more special as their logic and essence antiquate.

Without a shadow of a doubt you’ve done the right thing. The SMG gearbox was terrible and converting to manual will make you feel more connected to that V10. I have a Jaguar XJS V12 that I want to do the same to as the car will have so much more to give as a result. Instead of golf club cruiser, a B road stormer. (If the wife will let me! Lol)

@@Carolgeeskrs13 I have a dct in my M2c and wish it had the manual, it was a final production run and no more 6mt at the time I don’t drive just for pure speed and acceleration, I drive for fun And even this dct thinks for a second at low rpm. Not until you get to 5k+ does it shift quickly even in mode 3 on the dct

I have driven both types of XJS V12 cars. I can guarantee that swapping a Jag V12 over to a manual gearbox will absolutely transform the driving experience of the V12.

The smg isn't perfect but I love mine. It's fun and unique. Takes a while to get the hang of it...once you do you can pull violent fast shifts that make you grin ear to ear

@@btothea Never be ashamed for liking what you have, we're all different! Honestly I haven't found any A/T that I like, DCT is close but not without faults. I've seen custom DCT's where you can even have a clutch (for those spirited country drives) but automatic function for city driving, but they cost a lot. Main issue is I'm too old for normal A/T's to ever have a chance of growing on me anyway, By the time we have a auto box I could afford and actually want to use, ICE will be gone anyway, so I'm chalking it up to lost cause 😂

This is fast becoming one of my favourite channels on YT. The way you speak with such passion relay gets to the root of why we love cars and driving. What you have created with the M5 is fantastic, it is more than just a modified car. You have taken one of THE great engines and mated it to a manual box to bring another level of control and involvement to the experience... Please build another and take my money, I want one!!! I really hope that, as great a piece of filming as that was (I really enjoyed the mirroring to the Clarkson piece you mentioned) your prediction is wrong. I would love to see the majority of commuting and everyday cars go electric, but that rare special cars like the M5, and old 911s, Ferraris, Lambos etc can live on knowing that in small numbers (in the grand sche of things) and with low mileages each year they aren't killing the planet... And with Porsche's help developing Synthetic fuels, that future could be even brighter... Long live the NA V10 😍

I've got an E36 318i from my dad to let me practice my manual tech. The first time I was so nervous about driving a manual car and I ended up stuck in traffic but now I feel excited when I drive my E36 simply just so much more fun than just peddling brakes and throttle. everytime I shift I feel the car feeding back the force of the engine I appreciate my dad gave me a chance to experience this epic machine !

I really admire the work you have done to this car. The M5 E60/61 could have been even more of a legend, with a manual gearbox as standard. But because it wasn’t, you made it a true legend which will be worth a fortune in a few years! If it wasn’t for the starting-to-break head gasket in my E39 523iA (sorry, it’s an automatic), I would’ve definitely gone for a drive… fortunately, end of this month it will be fixed!

I would love to see you get the exhaust tips rechromed, I used to have one of these M5s in the same colour and spent a lot of time and attention on caring for the exhausts and it was fantastic walking to the car every day and seeing four exhausts glinting in the sunshine. Great video!

Mike, you said it perfectly. My daily car have automatic gearbox and it is just about getting from point A to point B. It is comfortible, but that is all. For weekends, I have small BMW with manual gearbox and the pure joy of connecting with machine and use its capability as driver want and need is just nice and great.

SMG box never suited the car. It aged terribly and was the fly in the ointment for the E46 CSL M3. I remember driving a manual V10 M5 in Norway (US spec) and thinking it was glorious. I LOVE the sound of that V10! I'm deeply in love with that V10! I had shivvers down my spine multiple times with this video. I can't have a proper drive now, because my project car isn't ready yet. It's a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant station with a 2,5L V6 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. Sure, it's not the best looking (maybe for others, for me it's perfect), or the best sounding or whatever, but I absolutely LOVE that car. So, I'll wait for that car to return to me and then I'll have a proper drive through lovely roads with only the sound of the engine.

I like that BMW is given to taking monumental risks. Whether aesthetics, transmission, drive train, i-drive or otherwise, they are always pushing boundaries. I think that you're fortunate to have had a workshop that has the wherewithal to do the transmission swop. I am looking at at an SMG E61 myself and doubt that I could do the swop in my corner of the world as successfully as you have done it. Great video!

So I own a E60 M5 SMG and I have driven a converted manual E60 M5 (e92 6 speed conversion same as this) The SMG car is faster both top end and in acceleration , Loads of threads and discussions on changing the rear diff ration on them also, while it might placebo effect feel better, draggy times and many owners who have done, show otherwise The SMG is not to everyone's liking but it gives the M5 more soul, Mode 6 full throttle shifts are its rare party trick, akin to a quickshifter on a sportsbike . The key to the SMG is not to drive it in D ever... just set it to manual mode and s5 and its better than any other paddle car of that era. This car is famous for its V10, and you still haven't fitted aftermarket manifolds and aftermarket exhaust Evolve have a supersprint spec exhaust for the E60 M5. Mine is currently going under the spanner to become a 5.8L and hoping for 620 RWHP. check out on youtube "stroker 5.8l v10 black beast" stick on some headphones and you can thank me later :D

Have you any links to vids/info on SMGIII cars with shorter diffs? I think a 4.10 would work really well but can’t find any evidence of anyone who has done the swap. I’m assuming the Transmission Control Unit will need re-calibrating, and that’s what’s stopped people doing it?

I live in Ansbach, Germany located in Bavaria. Stationed over seas I found there is so much beautiful country and no shortage of windy roads to lose yourself on. That said I recently bought my dream car. A 2014 Mustang GT California, Red with Black wheels. Manual of course. It was a now or never purchase post lockdown. I’ve done very little by way of modifications because I want her to last a long time. Yes it’s used, but I am the second owner, and the previous owner had a mountain of records which made me feel comfortable buying the car. I named her Scarlett. Needless to say anytime I go near the fun pedal there is such a feeling of joy. Seeing little kids point and mouth the word “Wow”. This video hit home because my son asked me if maybe he too could have a V8 muscle car when he gets older. I didn’t know what to say so I said “If you work hard enough and with a bit of luck anything is possible “. Not exactly a lie, but not the truth either. I do feel the end of an era coming. And it’s sad to think of how much future generations will miss out on. In the mean time...V8 roar, smiles per gallon, and fun in the sun.

Took my Saab 93 estate up the bwlch mountain pass in South Wales, amazing road, fun drive. Manual swapping was definitely the right decision, so much more engaging to drive than an auto. Keep it up guys

I have a 33 year old 1989 Mazda MX6. It’s not fast, but i built it to go around corners…and its ManuaL!! The feeling on a Sunday…to have a bit of heal toe action and sling a few corners together…is PRICELESS! You did the right thing by protecting a bygone era…
