For anyone considering buying a 330ci, I just bought a 2002 with 108k miles. It runs great, is incredibly fun to drive, and cheap to insure. I’d say the most important thing to do is to get it checked out by a mechanic before you buy one though. It’s pretty common for the older bmws to need a new clutch, and many other fixes which could end up costing more than the car itself. $3000 USD is pretty unrealistic unless you’re buying an absolute beater of an e46, but something around 4500-6000 is a lot more reasonable. It really boils down to what you want to do with the car also, because if you’re not going to be hitting the track often the 330ci is better than the m3 imo but to each their own. Hope some of this helps :)

The mounting points from the rear subframe can crack. But if the car was produced after 02.2000 this only happens when the car got abused. Also the M54 engines usually consume a lot of oil but that's not worring, you just have to acceot it and on the 5spd manual transmissions they sometimes have a problem where the gearleaver doesent center properly between 2 and 3 insteads it centers under gear 5. A lot of people say that the E46 is incredibky ubreliable, but I never had any problems with mine except for the coolingsystem. Some sooling parts usually crack between 100k and 200k miles.

When salesman saw how I drove 2004 330Ci convertible 6 speed manual with sports suspension, he said if I buy M3, I will have a lot of trouble with cops. For few more grand I could’ve gotten M3. He was an ass. With new trans and clutch at 100k, its got 180k miles. Still enjoying it but I guess with a less maintenance expense than M.

Last year I put over $6,000 into the car and still had around $3,000 still left to do before I gave up, sold it for less than I spent on repairs and moved on to a 2015 Jeep.... I will say however that E46 was one of the most enjoyable cars to drive I've ever been in, not to mention it looks so damn good. Can't recommend it to young people pinching pennies though.

for one, you didn't buy a well cared for example, you probably bought the cheapest one that looked cosmetically clean for another, i bet you went to the dealer for all maintenance and repairs, that's going to at least double your costs, you need to either fix it yourself or take it to an independent mechanic which specializes in bmws (use bimmershops.com) for another another, i bet you didn't really pay attention to the common issues with the car and didn't fix small things early before they snowballed into big things

The one you own, love to drive and take sweet care of. That's the best BMW. Which in my case is a BMW e46 316ti Compact with all options ticked except DSC, and is in a rare pistacho green color (#468) on both the outside and the inside sport interior. While these compacts aren't the pretiest, mine does end up turning heads everywhere. Besides, the e46 Compact has a retuned and improved saloon chassis. Faster steering rack and so on. It's really well balanced and I would even see it as a great RWD rally car, since it really turns nicely around tight corners... so ideal for mountain road hairpins. Anyway, as you can read I love my little Bimmer. It's not an M3 but it brings me that 'Freude am Fahren' nontheless, and that gives me the reason to love it in return. ;)
