At the start of 2022, we took a massive plunge by buying an E61 BMW M5 Touring - notoriously one of the most unreliable performance cars ever made! After three months of ownership, Mike Fernie has added up all the numbers to reveal just how much it has cost to run our 8,00rpm V10 estate car. It hasn't been cheap...

Let's be clear: doing work for a KZbin channel with _over 2 MILLION subscribers_ is an _investment._ Especially when those subscribers correlate so closely with your target market. Those other entities view this as quid pro quo - you'd have to hear from them about how much interest/sales conversion they saw after the episodes aired to understand the full picture.

The manual is 6-speed while the SMG III is 7 and better suited to the high revving. I would prefer 8 and would be interested in an 8-speed DCT but that is what the M3 S65 is for. I'm in total agreement with Stuart from Munich Legends: 'The manual does not suit the S85' I like the fact it starts in D with economy, engine and licence protection in mind. I love it that a pull on a paddle or the shifter goes straight to drivers gear choice, when it will still change to a more aggressive program BUT not let it over rev or stall. It is just more flexible giving you everything from driving grandma to bringing a smile to your face. And another thing a lot of people in the BMW car club have changed to Esso Supreme as it is still 100% petrol.

Wow your insurance is pricey Mike! I pay about £400 for my M6 (business mileage included @10k per year) and the tax is about £360 per year (Feb 2006 reg). I've done about 7k miles in 2 years in mine and so I use it a lot less than you, and I've yet to hit 280 out of a tank! I often get about 130-150 miles, but I mostly enjoy the car and do short trips, so they is about right. The rod bearings cost me about £1600 to do at BMR and mine is standard, so no intakes or exhaust mods and I won't be respraying, so they saves quite a bit of your estimate too. Servicing is very expensive though, with both dealers and specialists charging about £300 for oil changes and £750 for oil and spark plugs. I'm not convinced that plugs need changing every 7k miles thigh, BMW reckon 45k intervals, so half that and you should be fine. These ARE expensive cars to run if you use them daily, but much of the cost is optional (cosmetic or mods) and if the mileages is low, the cost will be lower too.

ignore the miles, it only takes around 6 months for oil to break down. Plasticicers etc and the volatile elements of the oil start to break down. Even if u dont drive it. Thats a fact. Ignore mileage unless you are doing massive miles.

So without the long term paint and PPF, it comes out to £1.11 per mile, before depreciation. That's insane. If you add in the long term maintenance, it comes out to £2.56 per mile over the 7k miles.

dang, usually PPF is considered pricey, but with this car, that similar to 4 months fuel cost

Er....other costs not included. Tyres? They've got to be a couple of hundred per corner and I bet it get's through a set every 10k miles. Depreciation? Or maybe 'appreciation'? I would expect a 2007 BMW estate would be on a downward price spiral but maybe there is a rarity value to this model that might make it gain value? And also, considering the amount of use it gets, there must be a cleaning bill, assuming you don't just go out with a bucket and sponge yourself.

Guessing he just hasn't had to replace the tyres since this is a "what I've actually spent" number but probably £1,000 for a decent set. 7k miles mean the rears must be due soon though if he hasn't done them, considering they've got 2 tonnes and 500hp trying to wreck them. Car value I'd imagine hasn't changed enough to note. Cleaning isn't something most people factor into car costs, but you could probably count the detail he's included...just spread that out over about 50 years to make it more realistic for a non-KZbin car 😄

Geez 10 to 15 quarts of oil in on of these. With that much oil these should never have issues. I guess if you do an oil change and leave 5 quarts (what most cars run in their entire oil system) of old oil in the sump oil related issues should be expected I guess.

It's a supercar estate. A Pagani Zonda service is around £10K I think, stand to be corrected. As for the paint, detail and PPF, a fool and their money are soon parted, especially on 2007 car.
