Why would there be oil and flames coming from the front of the cockpit, the P39 had the engine behind the pilot.
@walterswarhistoryarchive Жыл бұрын
There is an oil reservoir in the nose. It’s possible. The flames are probably a bit of a stretch

Presented is a clip from the Russian movie V.2 Escape from Hell which was released earlier this year. This movie tells the incredible story of Mikhail Devyatayev, a Russian P-39 pilot. On July 13, 1944 Mikhail's P-39 was shot down and he was captured by the Germans and prison camp. During his time in prison camps, Devyatayev and his peers were forced to work under horrible conditions, including removing unexploded ordinance from runways by hand. On February 8 1945, Devyatayev was able to escape his captors by stealing a German Heinkel 111 bomber and crashing it in Soviet held territory after sustaining fire from Russian AAA. Russian leadership did not believe his story and despite providing important information about the V-1 and V-2 rocket programs, Devyatayev was confined to military prison until he was discharged from the military in late 1945. Devyatayev's record was not cleared until 1957 after Sergey Korolyov, the head of the Soviet space program argued his case by highlighting the importance of Devyatayev's intel about the V-1 and V-2 rocket programs. Devyatayev was later awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal on August 15th, 1957.

Where is all that oil and in particular oilrelated fire coming from? Save for a limited amount of oil in the separately lubricated (and armoured) gearbox placed just behind the prop, all oil in the aircraft is in the engine placed behind the pilot or at worst below him in the oil coolers, so any major oil spill or slowly developing oil fire ought to have been mostly behind the pilots field of view. To add to that, a hit to the gear box oil tank would not have made the engine cut (allthough it would probably reduce the gearbox remaining life considerably) What would have been sensitive in the nose would have been the munitions for the fuse mounted guns.......
