"Should the swastika be allowed on historically accurate aircraft in Germany?" I'm not a German but in my opinion, yes. Not just Germany, but anywhere they are displayed or used to teach history. I grew up playing with historically themed toys of all kinds, from American West Cowboy gear to Civil War, to WWII and beyond. None of those items influenced my life choices or made me an extremist. Cancelling history is the surest way to repeat it, in my view.

@@truthseeker9454 Precisely. There are far too many examples of history quite literally repeating itself and had unfettered and unbiased, rational discussions been allowed without censorship to discuss the merits or failures of past politics and regimes we would not find ourselves making the same mistakes or ignorantly trying to "improve" on them in the present day.

@@TheSilmarallion Indeed, but not quite as bad. Read that due to the geometry of the key mounting points, the Bf109 had slight toe-out on the tracking. Not so much of an issue when flying off grass as the effect would not by great but dirt or concrete runways would be very interesting! Try driving a car with the front wheels set at a toe-out wheel alignment and you will find the car wants to go all over the place and you have your work cut out trying to keep going straght ahead. Found this out many years ago when towing a beacg buggy to the beach. With toe-out the front wheels were all over the place fighting the draw bar all they way, however, when the correct toe-in was set, towed like a champ, not a shimmy to be seen.

Considering it flew before all principal Allied fighters, it's duration of its production, of the many theatres in which it fought, of the numbers produced, of the number of 'aces' it produced and of the number of enemy aircraft it shot down, in my book the Messerschmitt Bf-109 ranks as the most successful fighter aircraft in history. It's always a privilege to see such a restored classic fly and to hear the sound of the DB-601 again. Congratulations to all those who helped get her back in the air, where she belongs.

I’m a fan of the plane and respect your opinion. The reason I think it’s not the most successful is the difficulty in adding additional armaments or really significantly upgrading it like the Spitfire 24 vs the first Spitfire but mostly the numbers written off in T/O and Landing accidents. That happens to every plane and part of the numbers were due to decreasing pilot quality towards the end of the war but it knocks it out of top spot IMHO. But I’m ecstatic she’s flying.

The 109 series IS the most successful fighter ever made!
@calvinnickel9995
@calvinnickel9995 5 ай бұрын
@cat-im4vv It’s the most numerous fighter ever made. Do numbers equal success? The Americans and British could have easily made a fighter in these numbers.. but they made so many different kinds which reflected wartime advances as well as specialized roles. They also made fighters that were larger and better armed with more speed and maneuverability and range. The German war production was severely hampered in all aspects from attacks on factories to worker shortages-especially tool makers which are required for new aircraft types-to material shortages to immediate expediencies of war which couldn’t risk downtime and possible failure of a new fighter type. Even the amazing ME-262 consumed vital resources for it to only be shot down taking off or landing at airfields that were constantly harrassssd by rhe enemy.
@Whitpusmc
@Whitpusmc 5 ай бұрын
@@calvinnickel9995 The later Spitfire marks and the later P-51 versions were just all around better planes than the ME-109 which was a pre-war design and was limited by the size of the plane. The later Spitfire marks had a more powerful engine than the original and the P-51D had the benefit of several more years of areoplane development particularly the laminar flow wing and aircraft construction that reduced drag. Being able to escort B-17’s to Berlin and back and still dog fight over Berlin is something no German fighter could dream of doing. And the numerous ME-109s lost in take-off and landing accidents makes it very tough to claim the best ever if 25% of your strength is eliminated in non combat actions. That said it’s incredible that a plane originally designed and built in the 1930’s was good enough to fight through to 1945 and still be an effective plane at wars end. The venerable Zero and the Wildcat were excellent planes but by wars end they were no longer capable of taking on the front line missions that the ME-109G/F could.

"Registered D-FEML and owned by historic car collector Eberhard Thiesen, the former 5./JG 5 Bf 109 was recovered in 1993 from Titovka near Murmansk, where it had crash-landed on 24 January 1942 after combat with Soviet Hawker Hurricanes. After completing five test flights, Brown professed himself delighted with the aircraft’s performance. Originally built as a Bf 109 E-4, the fighter was subsequently converted to E-7 standard with provision to carry a 300-litre centreline drop tank, or a bomb for use as a ‘Jabo’ fighter-bomber. The restoration has seen it taken back to E-4 configuration."

@@muckiderhase157 From the Warbirds Information Exchange website : Quote : The remains of the aircraft were recovered near Murmansk, Russia in 1993, where it had crashed on January 24, 1942 when operated as part of 5./JG5. The fuselage was rebuilt by Craig Charleston and the wings were rebuilt by Hartmair Leichtbau. The DB 601 fitted to the restoration was rebuilt by Sigi Knoll and Karl Vogt. It was taxi-tested in 2017, but issues were found with the engine which required more attention (the engine could be seen being worked on/tested on a ground stand at Manching for a while). With the engine refitted, Klaus Plasa did some more ground tests with the aircraft in 2022. And from another post : Quote : As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the aircraft operated with 5./JG5 and was forced down by Hawker Hurricanes during combat near Murmansk, Russia in January 1942. The aircraft was recovered in 1993. The main body of the restoration/rebuild, including fuselage, tail, cowls, cockpit, landing gear, etc., was done by Craig Charleston in the UK, and the wings and some other components were restored/rebuilt by Hartmair Leichtbau in Germany. It was reported some years ago that the DB 601 fitted to the aircraft was rebuilt by Sigi Knoll and Karl Vogt (at the Messerschmitt Foundation, Manching, Germany), and Dirk Bende has been involved with the engine more recently, getting it consistently running correctly. I would suspect Skycraft in the UK was responsible for the propeller, since they did those for the other two airworthy Bf 109Es (currently not flying, but hopefully soon-ish).

WOW it looks and sounds fantastic! My dad was a young WWII B-25 pilot stationed in Tunis, Tunisia in Jimmy Doolittle's outfit in 1943. On a bombing mission over Pantelleria island one day his small flight of bombers encountered an overwhelming number of Bf-109s on the horizon, protecting the very important North Africa supply chain. My dad's flight leader, realizing it was a suicide mission, immediately ordered an emergency dive away abort to the mission before the deadly Bf-109s saw them. I can only imagine the adrenaline of facing a huge swarm of deadly Bf-109s in a medium bomber! Luckily, my dad survived the war, continued flying, and retired from the USAF as a Major after 21 years of service. Considering he started out as an army Private assigned to a parachute packing outfit he did pretty well. If he were alive today I'm sure he'd love to try his hand at flying that Messerschmitt! 😁

+@larsgustavsson4891 Lost on 24-January-1942 after being shot down by Soviet Hurricanes and force-landing into a marsh near Murmansk. Recovered and exported to the UK by a well-known warbird collector who removed many German aircraft from Russia when it was easier to do. The restoration was performed in the UK, except for the wings which were built in Germany.

Holy cow that's one loud supercharger...even for a 109! Just wondering if that's normal or is it because everything is so new? Love this channel!!

You want to know something very special ? The Me108 trainer flies exactly like the 109 E. Before these planes were flying Hollywood used the Me108 as a substitute. Somebody actually owned one very near me in it was my privilege to see it fly. Later on when I got to see the real thing I was amazed that they fly exactly the same way ! This may sound crazy but I would love to see even earlier models of the 109 to be built and fliwn like the ones that flew in Spain.

Some guy used to fly a Me 108 into Silverstone for the British Grand Prix back in the early seventies. i saw it a couple of times and i'm sure it sported the swastika on the tailplane too.

Not sure what you mean but we had a 108 in the CAF in Hobbs New Mexico back in the early 70s and it flew about as close to the 109 as the T-37 did to the T-38.

@LoosMoose It’s hard to say what they mean. Obviously a 109/T-38 is going to blow away a 108/T-37 in acceleration, climb rate, and top speed. But usually when people say it it’s more of a stability/control harmony/stall characteristics kind of thing.. and often even more basic things like control layout or basic systems. I fly a Cessna Caravan and it really is a big Cessna 172 even though it has an 867 HP turboprop instead of a 150 HP piston engine and can go 175 knots instead of 100. I’ve heard people say the same thing about Beechcraft from the Bonanza to the King Air which I also fly. I wouldn’t be surprised if a T-37 flew like a Cessna 172 or Caravan.

Had one pass over my a couple of years ago. I noticed that low rev deep sound, almost diesel-like, compared to the powerfull music from the Merlins.

Agree .. The logo on its fin was a symbol of its very existence. Beautiful machine and awesome restoration, but to deny the logo on the fin is a bit of a shame for those brave young men who fought and died in these machines flying for the glory of the Reich. Love it or hate it, that symbol does belong on this aircraft.

Great video. As a private pilot with a lot of hours in tailwheel airplanes I have to think the 109 was tough to taxi with that nose so high. The pilot in this video obviously is very skilled.

Rare enough but even more rare are the 109s with the original DB engine. After WW2 the Spanish flew German aircraft but put Merlins in them due to the scarcity of the DBs. Very distinctive turbo as well.
