One of Lelouch's flaws is definitely letting emotions overpower his logic, and Shirley's death and everything surrounding it was just a huge trigger that pushed Lelouch's emotional side to the forefront.

It's something I think he has a hard time noticing and correcting because he seems to believe he can forsake his feelings in favor of his goal ever since he shot clovis. And time and time again Lelouch discovers he's a man with a heart just like everybody else. He just can't be the goal machine he needs to be.

I would argue that his emotions are important. When it comes down to it, he is motivated by his emotions first and foremost. The problem is that he gets so overwhelmed by strong emotions that he allows them to cloud his judgement and lose sight of the bigger picture. His emotions are a source of strength and a weakness for him.

The irony in this case is that destroying the Order and slaughtering the test subjects was undoubtedly better for the Black Knights and for the world in the long run, but it also exponentially increased the distrust some of his men were starting to have towards him, and thus accelerated his eventual downfall

This is going to have spoilers for the series overall including Akito the Exile, which I haven’t watched but know a little of. So only read if you don’t mind spoilers. According to what I read on the wiki a while back Lelouch’s Geass numerically has the most restrictions to it. I think that might relate to what he says later regarding Geass being a wish to grant people the power they feel they need. Lelouch was already planning to face Britania without Geass but at the beginning he also notes that “no matter how hard you try It’s impossible to change the world.” His Geass essentially gave him the power to actually stand a chance to defeating the worlds greatest superpower. However, because he believes in the responsibility of leadership I believe he also didn’t want a power that would let him realise whatever he wanted without fair effort and sacrifice. Interestingly enough one of Lelouch’s siblings has a more powerful version of his Geass with fewer restrictions. I think that supports my current view.

Geass Order is a secret organization that studies and produces Geass users. Lelouch was aware of the terrible things they did in the Geass Order and, by extension, that this place stole Rolo's childhood and controlled his life by turning him into a weapon. And yet, he intended to use them until he changed plans for Shirley. Shirley's death made Lelouch realize how terrible the power of Geass is in the hands of a child and gave him the fear that all Geass users were like Rolo (both his justification for killing Shirley and Rolo's jealousy towards Nunnally stem from the conditioning he received in the Geass Cult; in his opinion, Rolo did the right thing by protecting Lelouch, the only person who told him he was valuable and made him happy). In this way, massacring the Geass Cult was Lelouch's way of getting revenge on the organization, Rolo, and also the Geass, since Lelouch saw Shirley as a victim of the Geass. However, this revenge comes from recent pain and anger and we have already witnessed emotions suppress Lelouch's logic and reasoning, leading him to make hasty and unintelligent decisions. In this case, taking a squad of Black Knights on a secret mission without explaining to them why they have to destroy that place or who the scientists and children they are killing are, or at least erasing their memories afterwards. And, that is why the massacre of the Geass Cult is one of Lelouch's worst mistakes that will have its own consequences. As such, it's worth asking why CC didn't stop him since in the first season she was his voice of reason. This is due to two reasons: the first is that CC is selfish and therefore always prioritizes herself over Lelouch (this is the same reason why CC keeps valuable information that concerns Lelouch, among other questionable things), so she only thinks of Lelouch and organizes her plans in a way that helps Lelouch and doesn't interfere with his goals. This brings me to my second point: CC also wanted the destruction of the Geass Cult. She was the leader of that organization long ago that gave Geass to children, even though she was aware that Geass was a curse. So she feels that by ending the Geass lineage she will be atoning for her own sin. Furthermore, CC has her reasons for hating Geass: like Lelouch, Geass ruined her life and the lives of many that she, in a way, allowed. Shirley's death was the last straw for Suzaku. Shirley was one of his friends who was in his care and she ended up dead (as did Euphemia). Lelouch's absence at her funeral accentuated his suspicions that he was Zero, but Suzaku couldn't stop Zero without evidence confirming his identity and goes to Kallen to obtain it by force with the refrain (Suzaku is another person who makes mistakes, when emotions take control of him). But as soon as Suzaku realizes that he was about to follow Zero's philosophy ("the end justifies the means") and that he was going to bend Kallen's will like Zero, he stops because Suzaku realizes that he almost corrupts and it is there that he begins to reevaluate his own beliefs and methods and consider that neither Lelouch's nor his mentality is correct. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'll dedicate my review of the next episode to CC and I needed to talk about this moment as it was a turning point for Suzaku.
@neoshenlong9 ай бұрын
Just to add to your, as usual, excellent reviews. This is the point where we get into one of Code Geass more complex debates: free will. Geass is a tool that erases free will in different manners, but also imposes the free will of one person to everyone else through overwhelming power. The series is filled with non-geass stuff that allows the same thing. Suzaku here is willing to torture Kallen to achieve his own goals, as you said, but Suzaku's whole arc is about him putting everybody else's will over his own (which is also the dicotomy of his survive geass. It makes him survive at all cost putting aside the wishes of others, but it also forces him to keep fighting even though his own selfish desire is to die). The show really gets into what a geass really is (symbolically) later, but this is a key point to begin asking that question, when Lelouch decided to erase it. And then, of course, you have Charles claiming he will rid the world of lies, and that most definitely ties into these ideas. But that will be the next couple of episodes.

Double fun facts! 1. Cornelia was actually supposed to die in the season one finale (I assume Lelouch would kill her after interrogating her), but the creators changed their mind because they wanted a member of the royal family to investigate Geass and Cornelia had a valid reason to do it. Furthermore, they were delighted with the performance of her voice actress. 2. VV's real name is Victor zi Britannia, according to secondary material. In the first scene we have a glimpse of the motivation that drives both Charles and VV, as well as what the final (ideological) confrontation will consist of: human nature, as it couldn't be otherwise. There are even some little hints in the opening "World's end". I see that I'll have a lot to explain in my reviews, when we reach the final stretch. Small update: Montana is right. VV can't hate Marianne without having loved her and I have a headcannon that I think is actually canon since CC agrees with Montana in the next episode. I'll be brief: VV was in love with Marianne, but he couldn't be with her because he was an adult trapped in a child's body, so he couldn't give her a normal life. Besides, Marianne loved Charles. VV was really jealous of everything his brother had (the woman he loved and a family with her), but, since for him the bond between brothers is sacred, he couldn't allow himself to hate Charles, so he projected all his hatred onto Marianne. Therefore, when he said that she corrupted his brother, VV was actually talking about himself. And the thing I like most about my "headcanon" is that it fits very well with the narrative that Geass is a curse that is capable of destroying the mind and life of a child. Another thing. Rolo does have a soul, but he has no morals. He was trained to be a lethal weapon, he wasn't raised to be a human. He doesn't feel remorse for killing those children because in his eyes he is happy to serve his brother, the only person he loves and wants to make happy, and Lelouch wants to destroy Geass Order. In other words, doing what he has been taught (eliminating problems) is his way of expressing affection.

@saltyk98699 ай бұрын
@@lance2304 There are lots of theories about C2's name. The two most popular I've heard are Yuki Shiroi, which is Japanese for "snow white". This explains why both C2 and Lelouch brought up snow in those episodes. The biggest problem is that she's not Japanese. The other theory is Cecillia Corabella apparently based partly on lip reading. It also fits into the idea that she is going by her initials. The reality is that no one knows. But some form of Snow White makes sense with the episodes in Narita taken into account.

So the whole Geass Order thing has always been an interesting one to me. Obviously in this episode Lelouch just ran wild with emotions, but what IS the "good" option? The children are all unstable if we judge by Rolo, willing to murder with no morals. The scientists are all OK with child abuse clearly to make Rolo and Co. And we've seen just how dangerous Lelouch's Geass can be, it can be interpreted in ways he doesn't intend, it can stay dormant seemingly forever, and this isn't even touching stuff like Geass cancellers now existing or other outside forces. There really isn't a clear cut "good" option, everything comes with a "but".

I think it's around this point in the show that I decided that I really hated Lelouch. He just becomes worse and does more and more unethical things in pursuit of revenge, which is clearly what it's all about at this point. And he drags everyone else down with him. His actions result in Euphy's death, Shirley and her father's deaths, and the insanity of it all pushes Suzaku down a path he never would've gone down otherwise. He's just playing Charles' game and doesn't seem to even realize it. Also there's an interesting parallel between V2 and Rolo here that I didn't catch the first time I watched it.
