My grandboys have been asking to sew, that's a great idea.
@ShadowMoonFarms
@ShadowMoonFarms Жыл бұрын
@@juliatepe5760 I started them with pieces of paper. I drew a curved spiral on one and on the other I drew straight lines to make a "square spiral" to the middle of the page. They got used to steering, pivoting and not pulling on the paper. They were proud of the papers and took them home to show them off. Then actual sewing was fairly easy for them. My machine has a speed control and they choose the speed they are comfortable with.

It's so pretty! I once tried doing this with a paper foundation. THAT was a nightmare! Tweezers for days. So for decorative stitches, I now use fabric or interfacing foundation. I do like the back of this block with the grey thread on the white fabric, and thought that would be a beautiful block as is! Thanks for watching!

If you had added batting between your foundation and piecing, you would have quilted your quilt at the same time. Your block is beautiful. Are you making a Summer Quilt (no batting)?
@sunbeamfabricart
@sunbeamfabricart Жыл бұрын
That would definitely work! The muslin I used was too thin, so would not make a good backing. What I really thought was pretty was the way the decorative stitching looked on the plain white fabric (gray on white). I may do another project with this as the end plan. Thanks for watching!

I’m going to use this idea on a quilt top that I inherited! My grandmother pieced the top by hand from scraps of fabric that my mom gave her after sewing clothes for us. But she was practically blind at the time and her hand stitches weren’t very strong. I’ve always known I was going to stitch the top to a foundation piece and the decorative stitches will hold it to the foundation fabric. Thank you!

since you have those wonderful stitches your machine can do. I would want them to show up so I would have used a deep gold almost orange color to pop the stitches....looked so easy, I always wanted a crazy quilt...the ones of my youth would have buttons, usually from a wedding dress or outfit that meant something, pearls from a broken necklace, lace, even a pink topped diaper pin...my grandma told me a crazy quilt was one that held memories and scraps that were not big enough or plenty of yardage to do a patterned quilt...even men's ties and suit materials were included. today my grandma would use tech. to transfer photos to cloth and put them in the middle of the quilt then things from their youth, an example a married couple , things from their dating life, wedding shower, all the events meaningful to them be in the quilt..... wouldn't that make a wonderful wedding gift?
@sunbeamfabricart

☀️ Hello! ☀️ The very first quilt I made was a crazy quilt out of my daughter and my old clothes and things! It was a gift for her and she still has it. Here's a video link with some more visible decorative stitching: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ammscmeVjtd_Z8k Speaking of wedding dresses, I picked up a thrift store wedding dress for $24.99 a few months back and probably will have a video out on that in the next few months. I am planning a white and gray quilt with BLACK decorative stitching! :-) The dress has all it's lovely adornments of buttons and lace which I plan to incorporate too. But, like I said that is a few months down the road. Definitely 2023 though! Thanks for watching!☀️

this is really lovely! so i am a beginner at scrap quilting, can i ask, if you were joining these to make a bigger quilt, would you add batting as well? just wondered how heavy it would become if you have front/muslin/batting/back.....hope you don't mind me asking..thank you
@sunbeamfabricart
@sunbeamfabricart 11 ай бұрын
Hello! Scraps are so fun! For a quilt I would use batting. For a planned quilt I might choose no foundation at all, and just trim the blocks down, or I would use a paper foundation instead of muslin. The paper would be torn off later. Check out this crazy quilt I made using a paper foundation. If you are doing decorative stitching use NO foundation or a muslin foundation. This looks terrific for fast crazy! Great tutorial! I keep forgetting that it’s better to start with muslin but in this case, I think you could have used an embroidery stabilizer instead, which would be cheaper in the long run, and help stabilize the machine embroidery stitches. And you trimmed so much off :( I hope you use those trimming somewhere else 😜

@sunbeamfabricart
@sunbeamfabricart 11 ай бұрын
Great question! Three sided could work. Four sided would make it more like a log cabin block. And really anything bigger than five sided would get a little bit complicated. Five sided seems to be the sweet spot for crazy quilt blocks. 🧵☀️👍🏼

@sunbeamfabricart
@sunbeamfabricart Жыл бұрын
Great question. You could definitely stitch up a block without a backing. I prefer a stabilizer for doing decorative stitches for sure, as the stitches will come out wonky without it. For blocks with no decorative stitching, I like using a newsprint backing just to keep track of the size I'm trying to finish at. The way that works for you is the best way! ☀️
