I am fortunate enough to own this entire video (vhs) series as my Instructor migrated to N,Y.C. from Hong Kong in 1970. his Instructor was Ng Wah Sum, a.k.a. Lightening Sum, who studied under Leung Shung, Grandmaster Ip Man's first diciple in Hong Kong.

Is it possible to train Wing Chun by yourself without a training partner ? Like only imagining a sparring partner ? Because I would like to train Wing Chun because of the beautiful moves I see in this video . greetings happy Eastern for you , Alex de Lisa ♪♥♪

gladietita Greetings, thank you, and Happy Easter to you as well :-) To be quite honest, it's not really a good idea to practice alone if you're not formally trained. The reason being it's very easy to do what feels good even though it's not correct, with no one to guide and correct you these movements will become part of you in the form of "bad habits". With Wing Chun, What you see is only a part of the story, the feelings involved in the movements are more meaningful and important. This is why one should train with a qualified instructor.

gladietita not really. its like anything, you have to go through it to really become familiar and proficient.

gladietita also, just because there is no dojo, you can practice with a friend. it may not be as scientific but try to find someone already into it, or another form of self-defense for whatever you have available. most of them are related in some ways, and you can always be learning more later. try to focus on aspects of boxing/wing chun, regular karate is good for a few ideas too, BJJ is also very good to know when you get taken down! Judo can help with that though as well. studying and trying all these helps to get a more complete picture of how 2 human bodies interact with each other while in a fight or movement in general, as in aikido which focus on circular momentum. be like water lol as Bruce lee said. but just taking some mma classes and staying in shape will always put you a cut above in general.

Grandmaster Ip Man was Bruces Sifu and Grandmaster Wong Chun Leung was his Sihing (Senior Student). If I remember correctly Bruce actually learned from Grandmaster Wong most of the time. You can see that much of Bruces philosofy is inspired by grandmaster Wong. He was a great fighter. As mentioned he won around 60 or even more. He was never defeated.

@Abgef Please refrain from stating that 'fancy maneuvers' are unrealistic, they are not complicated, and they work, though i agree with your statement that not all stories are right, i still think that this is effective in doing what it was designed for... fighting in close combat. If you want a complicated move that will be very likely to fail, try a TKD jumping back thrust :-)

@Abgef Agree with your last part that fights in Kung fu movies are terribly unrealistic... though i will argue still because it is fun to see what others think. I do agree that this video make it seem very slow, but this is for demonstration purposes. When it comes to martial arts, it is all about application, complicated moves are used for demonstration purposes. in a fight, most people will use what they are comfortable with. Wing chun is no exception, it is effective one way or another!

@Stimpackswe I'm glad you clarified what you meant then. You can't expect me to know what you meant with a vague statement like "Even bruce lee was not able to beat him" but I'll be honest Bruce himself was also taught by Ip man, he wouldn't have been that far off even if it was just pure sticking hands. Bruce had speed in sticking hands but Wong would have had way more technique. Would have been amazing to watch nonetheless.

Its not a contest about who's better, Bruce of Wong Shun Leung. Bruce was smart and bright. He learned a bit of wing chun from Ip man. Certainly not the whole system. He also learned a lot of other stuff from other martial artists and blended it all together to make it his own Jeet Kune do. However; some of his most famous moves are nothing more and nothing less than what you can expect from a trained wing chun martial artist (one inch punch, speed in his punches, deflecting hands, etc).

Anyone seen video of Wing Chun used in a real life scenario? Most if what I see are techniques being used against chain or straight line punches. Hardly ever see a hook or uppercut thrown. Would be nice to see how a wing chun practitioner deals with a variety of punches, not just straight punches

You do have point but ppl that know how to fight won't really throw hooks unless they can't fight which what you are saying but there somes techniques for that u just gotta keep searching for it I seen some for hook and uppercut but I seen them using there's palms to parry it

@Stimpackswe Look at your top comment. "And even bruce lee was not able to beat him" that's a pretty strong stance don't you think? if it's just a theory then you should at least back it up and say at which point of Bruce's life wong would be able to beat him. I can imagine wong having difficulties with a 24 year old version of Bruce already (the time he was doing kato) as he was incredibly fast. The Bruce that went back to HK is even better, I'd say in Return of the Dragon.

about as much as an elderly brother (si-hing) does in every school around the globe... why is it so relevant how little bruce learned from whom? why do we care about an actor, who left his si-fu pretty early.. and had to reinvent a lot of wheels, based on the beginners knowledge he managed to obtain. The real respect should be with those students of IP man who stayed with the art, art and loyal to their si-fu. Wong Shun Leung, Leung Ting, ip chun ..and many more

I like Wing Chun but what happens in a street encounter when you are not wearing very loose trousers or worse a skirt? Probably the best self defence method is to study the fighting techniques of the old prize fighters like Richard Humpreys or Daniel Mendoza. Pugilism emphasises punching, mostly to the body with some grappling.

Catcher Saurizard that is where sticking hands come into play. You can't rely on a few minutes of watching the basics and expect to defeat someone who has been fighting in instinct their entire life. Like all things it takes time.

It's a weird statement to say that "Bruce Lee was not able to beat him" because Wing Chun is not about "beating" your opponent, it's about "adapting" to your opponent and "flowing TOGETHER with him"... "INVITING HIM IN AND ESCORTING HIM OUT" so therefore by you saying Bruce Lee was unable to beat him is a ridiculous saying and thus showing your "unability to understand Wing Chun".. Remember Bruce said "BE WATER, MY FRIEND" because water "ADAPTS" to its surroundings and takes shape of any form..
