Hedman 88400 headers work excellent in the first gen Rangers, though the passenger side did require a few creative pie cuts on the pipe that joined to the header... 1992 Thunderbird front accessory drive parts are very short as well, but not as short as the Exploder parts. I successfully installed A/C in my V8 swapped 87 Ranger and while it's not perfect, it still gets down to 41-42 degrees F on the highway (50-52 degrees F while stopped in traffic for a long time) and doesn't make the truck overheat in stop-n-go traffic with the factory 92 Thunderbird mechanical fan and no shroud. I used the factory 92 Thunderbird compressor and built a custom adjustable bracket to mount the compressor where the Thunderbird smog pump used to be, along with 100% custom A/C hoses and the largest aftermarket A/C condenser I could physically fit in front of the radiator. The Canton oil filter relocation kit wouldn't fit in my truck because the engine is mounted so low. I have about 1/2" between the factory crossmember and the 92 Thunderbird oil pan. I used early Bronco mounts with the usual Advance Adapters engine mount plates, and Advance Adapters cast oil filter relocation adapter and A/N hose fittings. Fiberglassing the HVAC box after cutting is the way to go. For fuel lines I used 100% A/N hose and fittings and the Russell quick disconnect Ford adapters to hook to the factory Ford fuel pump hanger from a 1987 EFI Ranger. Plenty of fuel flow and a mostly accurate factory fuel gauge. I used the Ron Francis Telorvek sequential injection mass air wiring system with a factory Ford A9P, with my Modern Driveline T5Z front socket/rear shift tailhousing transmission. Shifter in the factory location. Swapping to the PimpXS using sequential injection very soon along with AFR 1399 heads and 94-95 Cobra upper intake with an Explorer GT40 lower intake that I ported myself. All of my oem 1987 Ford Ranger gauges work except for my ammeter, which I'll be sending to Rocketman to convert it to a voltmeter, though I did install an unobtanium 140mph Ford Motorsports speedometer. Tried the AOD and it was a complete turd of a slushbox. Burnt it up in short order. My budget ended up being $30,000 so far and I'm not done with body work, but it's an absolute Mustang killer of a daily driver.

(New wife and baby came along lol, and sold the rig) One thing I learned, was the '74 Mustang II with the 302/C4 bellhousing was great since I had C5 tranny. Much smaller than the standard truck bellhousing, resulted in zero firewall mods to fit. This is still on my list to one day try again. Appreciate the info, you've done some GREAT work. My 94 ranger 3.0V6 w/ A4LD is crapped out so i have a few options. I can rebuild it all. But a mostly stock 302 from an explorer (or mustang) with an aod 2wd trans going to an 8.8 axle sounds the least time consuming. I want to keep the EFI and i know i might need a new driveshaft. Spring perches might need remounted but i am doing a static drop. What oil pan should i use with the 302? Do i need to modify the explorer one? I know some people have kept their oil pans from the mustangs but dont know if it there is a new one. Also will the fuel management/ecm from the explorer just attach into the ranger and just power it up? (Electrics are what im weak on).

I prefer not to mess with any OBD2 stuff because of PAtS and the trans control. A Ron Francis harness makes the swap 10x easier and cleaner. Using a foxbody mustang ecm will work great or if you feel like doing you own tuning I love the Microsquirt stuff. You can use the Explorer motor, just swap out the DiS for a mustang distributor. Any manual trans, c4, aod will work but if you choose to run the aode or 4r70w look into a manual valvebody or a Quick4 controller

Hello, I'm looking to swap in a 5.0 EFI and AOD, but I have a few questions that I can't seem to find any answers for. For context, I have a 1989 Ranger (2/89 if that matters) XLT, 2.3L, 2WD, M50D-R1, Super cab. 1.) What mounts can I use to go from that 2.3 to 5.0? 2.) Would I need to upgrade the front end/suspension/brakes to go to that 5.0 with that AOD? If so, what are my options? 3.) What do I need to do to fit that AOD in the truck? (Custom cross member, body lift, etc.?) Thanks in advance for your time.
@randumadventures
@randumadventures 4 ай бұрын
You need James Duff motor mounts. I have a video on installing those. All the suspension will be fine but if you have the d28 front axle I highly recommend upgrading to the post 1990 d35 axle, it’s a direct bolt in. I have a video trying to install an AOD in my Ranger and it didn’t fit. The transfer case that bolts to the AOD is too big for your frame. There are no bolt in crossmember options, you’d have to fabricate everything.

@@randumadventures OK, thanks. I'll be using the same. I know that typically the O2 sensor needs to be within a certain proximity to the collector so that it's hot enough to get it to fire early enough to avoid a prolonged rich condition. I suppose a lot of that depends on the operating system. I know that the Ford system uses the air pump to create a false lean reading to basically act like a choke and keep the mixture on the rich side longer. Apparently the Microsquirt is calibrated in such a way to bypass this. Thanks for your input.

just a fyi on the C5, the valve body should be swapped as well but its not 100% necessary. Also shift kits and such for a C4 will work on the C5. The James duff motor mounts are similar design to fox mustang mounts. With the mustang mounts you need to swap the drivers mount to the passenger side and vice versa. The angle of the stud that bolts to the crossmember is changed doing that and makes them a little narrower to fit the slightly narrow RBV front crossmember. I guess I should have never sold my old james duff long tubes lol Most short tube headers will clear gt40p heads if you use 90 degree plug wire boots (at least in fox bodys) But I agree in this case of not using them on RBV swaps as it adds one more complication to this build and they are a pain to even swap plugs

@@chazzone if your building a short wheelbase truck like a bronco2 or short box ranger the e4od is going to be huge and I doubt the factory tcase will fit inside the frame. AOD would be easiest to fit. Aode and 4R will also fit fine but then require a way to control them. US Shift makes a stand alone ecm to control them unless trans is built to be fully manual. I’ve got to disagree here on some aspects! That v8 swap radiator is horrible. The port placements are just not designed worth a crap. You can get a 2 or 3 row 4.0 rad for your rangers that will bolt up and not have any port issues and are quite a bit cheaper than that. I can’t speak for b2s here but for rangers, stay clear of that thing!! Your right on the explorer accessory drive! If ford were to put a factory 5.0 in these rigs that’s definitely the accessory drive they would have chosen. And last point I do agree with somewhat, those duff mounts are great for a plug and chug setup although pricey, they are great for what they are, but if you design your own mounts you can get the motor to be placed wherever you choose and how high you want it etc. It is just a far better thing to do on these swaps because you can get almost any shorty style header to fit if you mess with placement as well as keeping the motor low to fit a truck or plenum intake. Super simple to make too but if you want easy and for the cash, go for the duff!

I just made my motor mount plates to use the run of mill Ford truck motor mount that fit from late 60s till least late 80s back then they were 7 bucks a side . Now truck is 94 5.8 97 5 speed from a 4.2 v6 . Shoot wish I knew how post pics on here .my truck looks like ford might nstalled engine and trans .right down to shifter and cup holder our of a 2000 ranger .

Thoughts on mercury cougar 5.0/trans or Lincoln mark vii 5.0 trans?
@randumadventures
@randumadventures 6 ай бұрын
If it’s a AOD trans it will work fine in a 2wd truck but if it’s 4wd it requires a complete tear down to convert and might be better off finding a 4wd trans from the start
@DwightSexton-zs8pp
@DwightSexton-zs8pp 6 ай бұрын
I was thinking the trans needs a full tear down anyways for the output adapter change. I'm having a hard time finding 96 explorer but can get an 5.0 HO and computer/harness from the cars I mentioned.

I was avoiding other years of explorer due to your info on spark plung angle. This has limited my options. Have you found any decent solutions to use a donor 98+?
@randumadventures

@@DwightSexton-zs8ppfirst off just don’t use gt40-p heads. Get any Explorer donor but swap the heads for some normal E7 heads or go aftermarket. Problem solved.

I’m going to disagree with you on the p heads. You didn’t mention that they were fords best flowing factory sbf head, that they were the “performance” heads and the reason for the spark plug angle offset (12 degrees) was for a better, more efficient burn pattern. The offset can be overcome by 90 or 45 degree spark plug boots and custom headers, I have titanium covers over mine as well for good measure. Or just recommend the 96-97.5 gt40 motors with traditional angles, the fox body guys been using them for years because they will out flow the trash e7 head for 400 bucks, but I’d never really advise someone use an e7 head, you’ll never make any power and have no mileage
@randumadventures
@randumadventures 2 жыл бұрын
You make valid points. The main reason I don’t think most people will not want to deal with the P heads is the header issue. Yes custom headers can be made but not everyone can do that, and if you have the money to have custom headers made why not just buy a much better aftermarket conventional head and buy a over the counter header?
@DylanC828
@DylanC828 2 жыл бұрын
@@randumadventures that's an option but I wouldn't advise an e7 head. Custom headers can cost from nothing to the moon, mine were 450. Much cheaper than 2000 on a set of 11rs, which will be there eventually and when it is they will breathe much better through mid lengths than an over the counter log. 302 with stock e7te heads makes about 200hp. With cam and springs you may break 300hp, barely. Stock p head explorer makes 235, with cam and springs you can make 340hp+ off a junkyard head. Richard Holdener has gotten 360hp on his test motors. And better (custom) headers will also complement aftermarket heads better. That's the route I've gone. But to each their own I guess, what you've built here is a badass ride and looks well put together.

On the gt40p heads issue I kick my self in the head everyday over them I wish I’d have gone for gt40 or even e7 the 15-20 horsepower you gain just isn’t worth the headache.
@danielrobey1759
@danielrobey1759 2 жыл бұрын
I've got a set of P heads on the shelf and I would run them on a 5.0 or 331 and make it work but honestly when you look at the price of some of the aftermarket heads available and the improved performance they bring to me it's a no brainer to go that route.
