1. Russia has invaded Ukraine. Some experts were warning that the invasion was imminent. However, the intensity and scale of the invasion is something that surprised most commentators. If we look into the history, regimes with dictatorial trends often prefer such surprises. Current Russian regime is no different. It started with Crimea, and finally a full scale invasion. The time is gloomy for all of us, even for Indians. A natural consequence of such man-made crisis is that all humanity would suffer in one way or another to some extent. Oil prices would shoot up, inflation would rise, people would become impatient, governments all over the world would find it hard to manage the anger of the population. This is a dark time, there is no question about it. Personally I think we are at the doorstep of another world war. A bloody, devastating disaster is in the process of making and the Russian invasion on Ukraine is just a precursor. It is true that India perhaps does not have much stake in the developments that are happening in Ukraine, especially if the developments are considered in isolation. The Indian government has done what is expected of it. It has taken a vague diplomatic stance which is almost tantamount to neutrality and made sure that all efforts are made for the safe evacuation of the Indian citizens living in Ukraine. Such an approach is the immediate need of the hour. But once the initial turmoil settles down, there is an urgent need to sit back and look into the geopolitics holistically. We might think invasion of Ukraine is an isolated event and we do not have much stake in Ukraine in any case, therefore, our diplomatic response should be as minimal and passive as possible. But diplomacy is just an outward action, the more important thing is the actions that we should take internally to prepare for any eventuality that might unfold as a consequence of what is happening in Ukraine. One important question in this regard is what are those internal actions. What more we can do to protect our interests. Well, the first step in this direction should be to try to connect the dots and look into things with a broad perspective. Considering the larger context might help us to navigate the uncertain future effectively. Talking about the larger context, the first thing that New Delhi should consider is as follows: Does the invasion of Ukraine really is an isolated incident? Is it just the manifestation of the Russian regime's intention to re-built the Soviet Union? Or is there even a larger, more complex geopolitics at play here? In my opinion, the second one is more likely. Yes, Russia is acting to fulfill its ambition. The question is, how come all of a sudden Russians are feeling so empowered? Any commentator of geopolitics would probably agree that the actions which Russia took is counter-intuitive. Economically, Russia is fragile; it is no match to the mighty coalition of liberal western nations led by the USA. The Russian president knows very well that invading Ukraine would entail stricter economic sanctions on his country. People would suffer, Russia would be isolated on the world stage, many of Putin's close aides, who are oligarchs, would face monetary loss due to the sanctions. The question is, why did the Russian regime undertake such a self-destructive move? The answer is then probably the move which we are thinking of as self-destructive, in Putin's own calculation it is not so, at least not to the extent to which we are thinking it to be. If we take into account the larger geopolitical context, the development in Ukraine would not seem counter intuitive. In our focus on the developments in Ukraine we perhaps have forgotten that there is another superpower in the process of making on this planet. The United States centric world is changing rapidly due to the arrival of this new power. A power which clearly has established itself as an economic superpower, a power which thinks it has not got global importance proportionate to its economic heft, a power that is ambitious and never shied away from openly declaring its desire to become a superpower. That power is China. It won't be a stretch of imagination if one were to think the developments in Ukraine have the full backing of China. It is quite likely that Russia and China have made a secret treaty or arrangement where China promised to help Russia every way possible to bypass all the western sanctions. China is a huge market, has enormous energy needs, has the ability to withstand any western sanction, and has accumulated enough diplomatic capital. If China promise to throw its weight behind Russia then it is likely the impact of any western sanction will be minimal. If we see the statements of Chinese government officials related to the developments in Ukraine, we would probably be more convinced about the possibility of such a secret pact. If we assume this hypothesis to be true, then the next logical question is what is there in it for China. Chinese communist party does not care about international norms, the well-being of the entire planet, or the rule based system that the west has invested too much in. We must understand every step that country takes in driven by its own long term aspirations. So it will be naïve to think China agreed to help Russia in fulling its ambition only to cause embarrassment to the United States led western coalition of liberal democracies. There is, probably, much more at play here. We might come to a concrete conclusion regarding this hypothesis if we take into account the Taiwan issue. China has never concealed its intention of invading Taiwan if the need arises. Going by the money China is spending to develop its military power, it is highly likely that a Taiwan invasion blueprint is already in place and can be activated within a notice period of a few days. China's recent aggression on India's northern border is just a piece in this larger context. The message to India is loud and clear. The message is as follows : China has the capability and willingness to take on India militarily if required and China knows the weak-points of India's defense. Their claim on Arunachal Pradesh and other areas would legitimize their action if such an action is taken against India. Therefore, the Indian government must think twice to get into any trouble with its northern neighbor. Well, the plan is working. If China is to invade Taiwan today, there is no reason to believe India's reaction to such an aggression will be any different from what its reaction is for Russian aggression in Ukraine. Not only with India, China plays this game with all of its neighbors who might have a role to play in the case of Taiwan-invasion. Given China's current power and ability, none of its neighboring countries would be willing to assist the United States led western coalition in any manner in the event of an invasion of Taiwan. If any neighboring country of China dares to align itself with the United States, China will punish that nation on some pretext. There is no dearth of pretexts. China has territorial disputes with almost all of its neighbors including India. Chinese cherish those disputes. Taking a position against China would mean territorial loss of a country. Considering this current situation, China's position now is more secure than it was anytime in the past. This is the right moment for them to invade Taiwan, and I think they will do that. The United States is in no position to engage itself in a two front war. President Biden's domestic problems are at their peak. The United States would hardly interfere even in Ukraine except for imposing a few futile economic sanctions on Russia. If the current world leader can not act in Ukraine, what is the possibility that it would act against China in the event of an invasion of Taiwan? The chances are minimal. China knows it, the whole world knows it, New Delhi should know it as well. Cont...

2. Given this possible future scenario, what should be the course of Indian policymakers is something that we all should contemplate in. A massive preparation is the need of the hour. This means, military, economic, logistic and trade preparations with a sense of urgency. The consequence of Taiwan falling into the Chinese fold is enormous. The global Chinese supremacy is inevitable, and it is going to happen in one way or another. Winning in Taiwan will only expedite that process. When we think about China, we often tend to consider Hong Kong and China as two different entities. But for all practical purposes, Hong Kong is now part of China. Its influence in terms of economy, strategic location, technological advances, research and technology, education system and businesses all add to the Chinese strength. A Chinese Taiwan will be another Hong Kong, similarly strengthening China in every possible way. Given this new scenario, Chinese supremacy in all aspects is inevitable especially if we consider technological advancement of Taiwan and its importance in the semiconductor industry. China will be far more embolden once they annex Taiwan, a breakaway province as per their claim. There is no reason to believe the dictatorial regime in China would stop there. Putin did not stop at Crimea, Hitler did not stop at Sudetenland, neither would the Chinese communist party. The weaker will go down first. Peaceful northern neighbors of India would be the first casualties once China establishes its hegemony. New Delhi should prepare the blue-print from now on what its role would be if the event of China attempting to swallow our peaceful northern neighbors. If somebody thinks this scenario is not very plausible then he or she has to just look into the Dokalam incident in Bhutan. India should start to engage with neighboring nations with whom India has thousands of years of relations and people to people connection. That engagement should be with an urgency of that of Sardar Patel at the time of India's independence. Moreover, India's relation with liberal democracies should be realigned, positively or negatively, depending upon the wisdom of our leaders and this needs to be done with some sense of urgency as well. We have to make sure our decisions, whatever those decisions are, should not be cluttered with colonial mentality which some of our elites espouse. In other words, a particular view or value system should not have a monopoly in that decision making. Yes, we are a democracy with democratic values, yes we, with all of our social and economic problems, are mostly liberal. But India is not the West. We are all human, but we are different with different sets of values. What the West considers as normal, unquestionable, and not compromisable, for us those things might not be of exactly the same value and importance. We need to be clear about this difference in our thinking and policymaking. Some people might get comfort in thinking that they are 'global' in their thinking. They might think being a globalist, or being a humanist is of more importance than being a nationalist. Well, this logic has some truth in it. However, unfortunately, the world is a different place. We are a very poor country. No country cared for our poor. The population in other countries did not sacrifice in any amount to make the lives of our poor a little bit better. World's wealth and natural resources are not shared proportionately. Every resource is divided based on national boundaries, and nobody is willing to compromise in any way in that regard. Most of us advocate peace but as long as the status quo is maintained, the mentality is that the peace would prevail as long as I get to keep what I have already got. But the status quo is discriminatory for obvious reasons. For example, Indians are almost one seventh of human population with less than two percent of the world's land. Every nation is prepared to give others lectures on how to do things "correctly" but they are not prepared to sacrifice their wealth, or natural resources. Here, when I say nation, I mean both : the government and media. The harsh truth is every nation is selfish, and we are on our own. Given this reality, being a nationalist in India is not an immoral act. Let us create our own path and destiny while sticking to our own civilizational values.
