I'm a former USAF Fuel Specialist (AFSC 63150) - I used to operate a truck like this one. It's an "R-5" with a 5000gal. capacity. When I started operating them on the flight-line they were painted yellow.

What is the difference between R-5 and R-9? That's what I remember and it was 5000 gal as well. Just a newer model?

​@DavidWilliford yes, newer model. Much better PTO (power take off) system. A lot easier to engage. The R5 was gas powered, the R9 was diesel. The R5 was a cab over, where the R9 was not. The R5 as you remember had two meters that indicated the amount of fuel dispensed to the aircraft, the R9 only had one. Just some of the differences.

What engine did these have? What year were these retired?

@VacantHaven That old Aviation Tanker is a COE. It means “cab over engine”. If you look behind the cab, you will see an old-school lever with a release grip. If you pull that, with a bit of effort, the whole cab will tip forward giving full access to the engine and front axle components.

The packaging you picked up that said Kings Norton was safety glass from Triplex Glass Company based in Kings Norton Birmingham. The blue colour was the original colour that Triplex used to use on it's packaged and pallets of Safety glass for vehicles and aerospace products. British Aerospace took over the production of aerospace products in the early 2000s. When Triplex was bought by pilkington and subsequently sold to the Japanese glass company Nippon.

The egg shaped bunker is actually a Stanton air raid shelter from ww2, common on most war time military bases.

Iv seen them fuel trucks at r.a.f upper heyford back in 92-94 my dad use to be the ministry police there and showed me around. And the other flat bed van the Americans uses them they had loads of them at upper heyford to drive the air crew around. Excellent video brought back memories 👍

G'day from Australia. Firstly, that was a differential centre not a transmission like Ed thought. The engine in the 60's GMC fuel tanker, is accessible by tilting the cab forward. The yellow vehicle was probably used for transporting large items such as planks for buildings. There is a lot to see there but it means that you would have to be there for the whole day. Keep exploring and sharing your adventures. Just as an extra bit of information, that electrical plug Ed saw was a RCA plug which was connected to the plane to communicate with the pilots.

Those were grounding wires to prevent static electricty, The clamp would be attached to the ground and the plug would attach to the plane. I used those when in the air force. As a matter of fact depending where this was located, I could have easily operated this exact vehicle.

Subscribed. After the end of the Cold War, and subsequently the Gulf War, the US deactivated most of it's bases in Europe. Most notably in Germany, but also several other countries including (obviously) the UK. Generally speaking, these bases were turned over to the host government, so this old base likely belongs to the MOD or has been further transferred to another branch of government. They know what's out there (or should). Yep, we leave a lot of stuff behind. Sometimes at the request of the host government, sometimes because it costs so much to ship back. During that time period the need for aviation fuel tankers was likely less than the number suddenly available. Gotta think that this one was the one in the worst shape of what they had - easier to leave it. I was based in Germany during this timeframe, and the US downsizing created a host of issues. A LOT of what had been built up in 40+ years was just destroyed, recycled, sold off to GIs before they left etc. Some stuff just stayed in place. The bases left behind the Germans wanted to reutilize for various things. The scale of this caught them off-guard though as there were LOTS of these small bases. By the time I left there were many with weeds growing all over just sitting there. Today most have found other uses, and some have been destroyed.

That bunker was really unique. A egg/cathedral shape. From USA. How odd that you found a US Air Force vehicle in the middle of nowhere in the UK. Good old R-5 5000 gallon refueler. These units were made from 1966-1969. They came with a 478 Cubic inch V-6 Magnum GM engine. It was a cab over and had many poor design features. No 4th gear lockup, a drift brake that could catch fire and a battery box in the center of the cab. If the battery cables were pinched between the cab and frame, it too could catch fire. When he opened the Cam Box, there was a lock out for the middle control level. This is the tank vent and when locked it wouldn’t allow you to pump fuel

Looks like you entered via a “crash gate”. Which were used for emergency vehicles to get to a crashed aircraft in the vicinity which didn’t make it back. Shelter was possibly for people guarding the gate during a NATO exercise. Don’t know thd location but several RAF bases had visiting yanks ( for unknown purposes) & location of fuel truck suggests it is parked in an old underground Bulk Fuel Installation (BFI). Most larger American bases such as Fairfield , Lakenheath & Mildenhall all had the RAF prefix, but we had nothing to do with them. As the refueller had a handheld nozzle -this suggests it was used for smaller aircraft / helicopters. Great vid guys & took me back a few hundred years as I was an RAF electrician who spent a lot of time fixing our refuellers.

The way you get to the engine is the entire cab lifts forward Their should be a lever under the cab above the tires or the lever is behind the cab The front of the cab is on a hinge. Which allowes it to lift forward

Me too! POL from 1982 -2005. The R5 was used to train us fuels troops at Chanute AFB in 1982. My first duty station was Altus AFB, where we had a large fleet of those!! Had a lot of scary moments on the flightline with those things, between the damn power take off to the battery sometimes smoking or catching fire. And the fact that you had 5000 gallons of very volatile JP4 didn't make it any better.

That is one thing about are US Military they waste a lot of money on leaving old Military equipment just set in other countries . It cost to much to bring it back home. You can go to the US Military auction an buy they stuff . Like the H1 Hummer millions of those was built buy them reel cheap. An fix them an drivee them on the streets here in the US. Those old fuel trucks for fueling the fighter planes you will see them over here in the US. I bet I could get that running after all those years. They are made to last. The yellow one next to the fuel truck is a plane taxy to move the big planes around at the airstrip move in an out of hangers. I love your channel it is great you guys every make it to the USA ??

It costs way more to bring that equipment back to the US than the equipment is even worth. I don't appreciate you trash talking about something you have absolutely no clue about. When you deploy with equipment like that, most of it is marked to be left behind anyway, like all the deuce trucks in iraq and humvees in Afghanistan. Not even close to a million Humvees were made, and they are not being sold to the public anymore except as scrap only.

The fuel truck appears to have been sold as suprplus with the USAF ID numbers on the door crudely spray painted over by paint that has since eroded away leaving only an outline and drip pattern. The personnel shelter was constructed of standard components which were also widely available as surplus in the 90's and it's lack of an actual blast door tells me that perhaps a private individual built his own bunker during the first cold war. My guess, you've found an old contractor's storage lot and not a defunct military installation. The vehicles, scaffolding pile, window frame and drums would be typical for that and is English record keeping so bad that such an installation would be forgotten after a mere 20 years? I think not. You might find another bunker there but I'd guess it'll be just another cold war inspired civvies's survival plan.

I drove this type R5 fuel truck from 75 to 79 at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio TX. I still have the a loud T37 noise in each ear (tinnitus)!

The GMC headquarters are located in Detroit, Michigan, but GMC vehicles are built in different locations and even in some areas of Canada.

That was an air raid shelter you found the spanner’s in. The first opening you found was the escape hatch which would have a steel ladder bolted onto the wall to allow you to get out in case the front entrance was blocked.

I doubt that the vehicles were left in the woods. My guess is that they were left on concrete or pavement and over the last thirty some years (since Aug 94) the woods have grown up around everything. The barrels were probably empty and left behind. My guess is that they got rolled down the hill by explorers (or kids) that came (long) before you.
