The fat laughing Buddha (Budai/Hotei) is somehow the most sympathetic to me. He is usually depicted as a pot-bellied, laughing monk and was a popular motif for the famous Zen master and painter Hakuin, among others.
He has recognized the colorful hustle and bustle of forms in time and space as the great theater of the universe, but does not withdraw as a hermit and lets the world be the world, but distributes the alms he has collected, which are in a huge sack that he always takes with him dragged around to the poor and needy and thus partly also stands for a symbol of socially committed Buddhism and for the virtue of self-sufficiency.
In many depictions he can be seen surrounded by children, a kind of Asian Santa Claus.
Nowadays, however, this original meaning has been somewhat lost, and the Budai's main place of work is now often a restaurant, where its main task is to advertise various culinary delights.
