Hello! Vacuum collector and vacuum technician of 17 years. Be careful with using baking soda. Any powder/carpet powder/ sheet rock dust has the potential to dry out the bearings in your vacuum cleaner which can cause premature motor failure. You’re using a Kirby which means all of the dirt passes through a fan before it hits the bag. That means the powder will take much longer to wear out the bearing behind the fan. Clean air (like Dyson) where the dirt hits the refuse bag or bin before the suction fans, would suffer much worse under this regiment of baking soda for each vacuuming. Food for thought and happy vacuuming!

I did wear out a vacuum cleaner testing mattress cleaning methods, but it was older and a smaller handheld one (plus I vacuumed A LOT of baking soda). Great advice - too bad we can't have you as a guest on our channel!

What is the difference between fan first and direct air vacuum?
@vacuumlover1
@vacuumlover1 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsantiago4810 a direct air vacuum has dirt that goes through the fan and is blown into a bag. A clean air vacuum has dirt that hits the bag before the air hits the fan. So no dirt will the fan before it hits the dirt receptacle. Like a dyson vacuum. However a dirty air vacuum, like a Kirby, all the dirt passes through a fan before it hits the bag.

The Kirby is what is actually known as a direct air machine. The Dyson, and the vast majority of vacuums, are bypass or "clean air'' machines.

A number of vac dealers suggest avoiding Baking soda cleaners as they've repaired many vacs clogged or damaged by it (most bags/filters won't keep it away from the motor bearings!). It's also ridiculously hard to get out of the carpet! Better would be micro sponge "dry" carpet cleaners from Host, Sebo, Zep, etc.

As a professional carpet cleaner the NUMBER 1 most important maintenance step for carpet is to vacuum.NOTHING else is more important. And in most homes vacuuming every other day is the MINIMUM unless the room is not used much. Two to three times a week is the minimum for almost all rooms that are used and I would HIGHLY recommend vacuuming EVERY day in rooms that are heavily used on a daily basis. Almost 80% of all soil in your carpet is dry particulate soil - which is best removed by vacuuming.

The biggest thing is to have a no shoe policy in the house to preserve the integrity of the carpet. I’m glad to see you don’t wear shoes in the house. Also, have you ever stepped on the vacuum cord with your bare feet? It hurts! 🤕 🦶🏻

This is Janet and that’s one reason we wear shoes in the house. To protect my feet! We took all the carpet out on our main floor and stairs. It’s way cleaner.

Thank you for the tip on how to be effective in carpet cleaning. Suggestion per carpet cleaners is to wear socks. Oil from our feet will be left on carpet and can attract dirt and dander. I thought wearing no shoes in the house was a great thing to do until the carpet cleaner informed me to wear socks or inside house shoes.

All of these tips are great. The one correction I would make is that all carpet isn't laid in the same direction so instead of always going forward to lift the fibers, you may have to pull back depending on the direction the carpet is laid. Due to the shape of the room or how furniture is positioned, you may not be able to move in the direction you would like to.

Sprinkling baking powder is a bad idea for most people because unless they have a high-airflow machine like a Kirby, the vacuum won't be able to pull it all out and no matter which vacuum that is used to do it, the backing powder clogs all the powers in the bag and/or filters which will reduce the airflow, which means a loss in performance. I'd only use it right before replacing bags and/or filters. It use baking powder on my mattresses, but only before replacing the bags on my vacuums.

The best ammount of times to vacuum your floors is different for everyone. I used to live in a lovely house right beside a motorway, the cat door was in a window directly in front of a bark chip garden, and the carpet was a fluffy, light blue/green, so I had to vacuum multiple times a day. Now I live away from main roads, the cat door is in the front door with conrete and a doormat outside, and the carpet is a short pile, dark brown, so we only need to vacuum once, maybe twice a week.

Baking soda clogs up my Miele so don’t use if your vacuum bag has fine pores. Also, vacuuming raises a lot of fine dust, even if it’s hepa, studies have shown in the real world just as much dust is in the air from the air on the vacuum blowing on room surfaces once the blowing air has left the vacuum. I turn on the air purifier and wait 20 minutes before allowing anyone in the room.

question .... my brother uses the hose attachment to aggressively rub back and forth on the carpet .... his notion is that he is getting the dirt that he says is deep down .... I say he is rubbing the carpet way to hard with the end of the hose which results in ware and tear on the carpet .... like sanding a piece of wood ... is what he does OK ??

Personally I disassemble all of my machines including the shampooer and clean it. It all works like brand new.. also.. if your brushes don't spin on the vacuum then just check the belt.. if that brush doesn't spin then the vacuum will be extremely inefficient at picking microscopic debris up. If you try to shampoo with carpet that hasn't been properly cleaned you'll have fun cleaning the shampooer..... or you'll have NO shampooer. So check the belt! The best way to stay clean is to learn what each component does in those machines and how it's put together. Once you learn that.. you're set.

Noooo baking soda. Not great for the motor in vacuums. Can wear them out rather prematurely. Instead in our home, after I vacuum the house and couches or beds, I have a spray bottle always at my ready with 70% isopropyl alcohol, nothing else added but you add lemon peels too if you like or orange peels. Takes the edge off straight alcohol smell. I take my spray bottle and mist every couch bed and all the carpeting in the house. granted you wanna do this with windows open. Exercise caution and keep away from heat sources. I find not only does it deodorize everything it also disinfects! Win win! The smell doesn’t linger, when it goes away you have a nice clean fresh house with no smells. And disinfected vacuumed furniture and carpets! I always have bottles upon bottles of the stuff at my ready. I use for everyday cleaning. It’s amazing.

I do try to get off as much as possible. It shouldn't leave much behind. Also most people aren't treating a large area. If I were to do this again I'd say to dust off as much as possible, or brush it off, or use a broom first. But I used a lot of the solution on a very terrible mattress and it was the last straw for my handheld vacuum. It was several years old and not an expensive vacuum. I've never had an issue with my handheld Dyson or central vacuum. But I do clean it out and if needed, get a new filter.

Baking soda shortens the life of the carpet fibers by grinding against them. Most of the baking soda penetrates through the carpet and the under pad. Your vacuum unfortunately won't pick up the baking soda in the pad and below. When you have your carpet replaced you'll actually see all of the dust and baking soda left behind on the sub floor. It's better to just regularly shampoo the carpet if you have odors.
