Sad to see iRobot lagging behind in a field in which it was once so competitive. This seems like a classic case of leadership being either unwilling or unable to adapt to the market and customer demand. Like you, I am a fan of iRobot and I'll continue to root for them in the future. Cheers!
@Niklaos3 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm on the market for a new Robot and was hoping that the 10Max was going to be it. I really would prefer to buy US designed products but they seem terribly obsolete compared to all the Chinese brands. The other US based manufacturer, Neato is also doing very poorly. I guess I'll probably give up and the Dreame X30/40...

Either you are a leader or a follower. iRobot has the same issue as many other US companies like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Boeing, Intel..... etc. Were leaders in their field for many years/decades, got too confortable without compatition and got greedy. When new companies came to compete they eventually took the lead...

They aren't really lagging behind in terms of their pure vacuuming bots, it's just their Vac/Mop combo bots that have some issues. I remember in the past iRobot stated that having a dedicated mopping bot is a better way to go than the combo approach; I think they felt forced to make these combo bots due to market demand. I wonder how well the M6 (iRobot's dedicated mopping bot) would perform on these tests?
@AGuyNamedJoshua3 ай бұрын
@@unbaked_potato i actually still use a J7+ and I’m generally very happy with its vacuuming and the customer support has been solid! Aside from its questionable pathfinding I have no complaints. And to your point, I have the M6 too. It does fairly well for what it is. And yet, I gaze longingly at the new combo robots that automate the entire process and feel like it’s time to leave my 2 robots behind for a single multipurpose machine. You know what I mean?

It's really a shame. I hope iRobot doesn't suffer the same fate as Neato. My Roomba 581 from 2007, after 17 years of headbutting the legs of tables and armchairs and many parts cannibalized from other broken Roombas, still does a good job. One day he will join his late brother, a Neato XV 21, which fell to pieces over the years until his death, in the well-known quality of Neato products. ☠ I will miss these two warriors.

As someone with a German shepherd and a pug, and tons of carpet, my top and overarching concern is pet hair quickly followed by deep clean. So many robots seem to prioritize other features over these. Hearing how the combo 10 compares on these criteria, I am so glad that I got the combo 10 and not something else. I can attest that its mopping is only ok. But, it does pretty well if you just need something to keep the floors clean and aren’t actively picking up messes, which honestly is probably more appropriate for a manual mop or a dedicated mop robot. The combo style robots will get gross going headlong into a spill especially those that drag their mops behind them. What gets me about the Combo 10’s pad wash is that it takes 3+ hours to dry after a job and wash, and if you interrupt it there is no way to tell the app to resume drying; you have to start all over again with a new wash and the heater timer resets to 3+ hours-probably because it can’t actually tell the difference between a wet and dry mop pad.

Something to remember: iRobot has the patent on knowing when the robot’s dirt bin is fun and to return to the dock to empty and keep going. It’s what makes them so effective still at the vacuum game. I can tell my i7+ to vacuum my whole floor and it will empty itself whenever it needs and then keep going whereas my Dreame I have to segment my cleaning job into 7-8 individual jobs so it doesn’t clog (yay for two shedding dogs). If iRobot would just get their head of the sand they’d have it made.

All your point ring loud and true for my S9 M6 pair. And both onboard and app software are some of the largest glaring issues. When it comes to raw vacuuming power, iRobot understands that ( though loud ) Their “do not disturb” implementation is a joke. It’s global for the Self emptying station, vacuum and mop. So I can’t just tell it not run the self emptying base after hours, or isolate the vacuum and Mop so that when Don’t disturb window is open. The mop can’t continue to function and let the loud robot rest. But the worst part of all, I can’t do any automation of the Do not disturb mode. As a result the vacuum starts up on weekdays the kids are off school and I have to physically via onboard buttons or app and cancel the job and sent it back. Or if the wife and I are up a bit later watching moves. There is a good minute or two of disruption while I try and kill the disturbance, that I could have easily automated to not function if the Tv is on.

That's super disappointing. I've been a hug iRobot fan for a while, and I'm currently running the Combo j9+. Having to manually clean the mop pads is annoying, but not my main issue. Whenever I run the vacuum and mop at the same time, the Roomba sucks up some of the water used to clean the floor, which then mixes with dust and such to gunk up the rollers and dust bin. The issue can be mitigated by running in vacuum only first, and then mopping with the vacuum on low (there really needs to be a mop only mode), but that requires manually starting two jobs via the app right now. With how saturated the 10 Max looked in the video, I could see the vacuum system gunking up very quickly. Maintenance wise, so far the Combo units have been a pretty big downgrade from my old Roomba + Braava pair.

I have a cousin who has a j7 for each floor of his house, he likes it. With my cerebral palsy, and my wife and I having a sheltie, in a 2/2 apt config (roughly 2/3rds hardwood), I’m thinking a j9/m6 pairing with potentially a combo vac/mop by some other brand for backup (right now I’m intrigued by the Shark PowerDetect Pro 2-in-1 with self-cleaning base / wash / dry the mop. Any other thoughts on a non-Chinese brand?)

Nor that after a few weeks of driving it is so scratched up as if it was several years old. it's a pity that there is nothing about the poor design - the docking station - the horizontal design of the water tanks is a mistake, and it still can't dose the cleaning fluid We need more of test in test :D at this price it shouldn't be in 19th place - vacuuming alone shouldn't be enough - especially since it doesn't do it like the competition with flexi arm - at edges and corners

Then, in 2022, found 2 new in box 980s and they all rock. Even bought the JetMop, and it's decent. I saw other brands rate high, but I wanted to hold out for iRobot since the 980 is such a beast. Then I saw iRobot 10 Max came out and jumped in thinking they had to finally get it right, right?? I did read a single review. Wow, was I wrong. It's cheap. It feels cheap. With the tiny dust bin, it clogs up with the simplest dust and is incapable of sucking it out. Then, there is no sensor between the rollers like there is on the 980. The dust bin is incredibly small and compact, and jams up. It's just not a good product, at all. Twice a week I have to do something to it, and it's only scheduled two clean twice a week. It's a POS PITA. They need to go back to the 980 and start from there.

iRobot has spent too long resting on it's laurels. For some reason it completely ignored LiDAR despite it being clearly a superior mapping technology. Instead it has relied on less efficient camera based and even gyroscopic based navigation. And that's not even the worst of it. The Braava mopping technology is terrible. The Braava Jet M6 is now an overpriced dinosaur of a mop, the design flaw regarding empty tank errors still hasn't been addressed. They discontinued the M240 which was a great little mop for single rooms. It could get places that no other robot mop can. The Navigation was sketchy, but that could have been addressed. iRobot now owned by Amazon isn't even innovating anymore. And what they release is overpriced and underperforming.

If Irobot ever hopes to be competitive again they really need to start from scratch. Get rid of the VSLAM navigation they are using and switch to LIDAR which is better in every way. They also need to add a mop that either spins or vibrates. At this point, companies such as Roborock, Dreametech, Ecovacs, Eufy and Narwal are so far ahead of them.
