I have this very watch as well as the Timor Heritage field which is very much true to the original but that being said I absolutely love what Vaer has done with the A12 v2. Thw dimensions are spot on including the 20mm lug width which is one of my favorite features. The movement in this watch is the real highlight even if it does not hack. It is wonderfully adorned with its blued screws and the such and is a joy to look at through the caseback. Thanks Armand for a great review of what I consider a key watch in my small collection.

My only real question about it is whether the 20mm lugs look out of proportion with the 36mm case. It really is an odd choice that they made in doing that. My instinct is that keep it 36 and make the lugs 18, or size it up to 38 or 37.5 and put the lugs at 20. But I don't know what it looks like in real life on the wrist, so it's just speculation.

@peterkull83543 жыл бұрын
@@IowanLawmanHi IowanLawman, as I mentioned before this was not a minimum requirement to a Mil. Spec watch "The hack watch" has this to say: Servicemen in the Vietnam War were issued watches made by Hamilton, Benrus or Westclox. These watches were made to the MIL-W-46374 or MIL-W-46374A spec. The A spec came out in 1968 and the watches were clearly made to be disposable. They featured non-hacking, 7-jewel stem-wound movements and luminous hands and markers. Meaning the higher spec GG 113 (pilot and officer) watch models featured hacking while the lower spec servicemen models (often referred to as the H3) did not feature this - with their super simple 7 jewel ticker. Vaer is a great watch. Especially the A12 ,36m.m. version. This is the closest thing to the real military version that was issued during the war . The fact that the movement is a manual mechanical high end 7001, adds to the appeal of this watch . The case is superb very nice shape with contours and with satin finish brushing that I feel is much better than Hamilton and seiko,s new so called field watch. I have both the Vaer,s field watches the heritage 40m.m.s no date and the new kick ass A12, version ,second hand sundial, with the bracelet and black horween strap, say hello to the future. Oh. I have an A12 and I have to say that overall it does not have the feel I was hoping for. Perhaps more like a modern tool watch than a period-correct homage. I also have several Time Factors watches whose dials are much more satisfying. And, yes, the movement of the Vaer is very nice, but at almost twice the price of the Time Factors I think it's a bit overpriced. This movement does not hack. Neither did the original DD spec watches. Here is the tradeoff, you get a very low profile hand wound swiss made movement with provenance, but it doesn't hack. However, you can "back hack" the movement in order to set the seconds tits on. It is not an elegant workaround, but it is perfectly doable. Up front I need to say that I am a Vaer fan and own their C3 and D5 watches. That said, I think this watch can’t really compete with either the Hamilton Khaki or the Bulova Hack watch - both have the right DNA and both are cheaper.
@fabiandee81782 жыл бұрын
Well DNA is a rather mixed metaphor, but neither Hamilton nor Bulova are US companies anymore their names were bought up by Swatch Group and Citizen respectively diluting their personalities down to fit in with their other products. Their proportions are v.odd compared with the originals, Hamilton has v. long lugs and that silly oversized ball on 2nd hand and too big crown. Otherwise it's great. The Bulova has 30m WR lol and auto (should be manual wind) is 13.5mm thick and skinny lug width and looks a bit odd but has a great dial. Vaer is a new brand granted but there's nothing 'original' about the others and they have inferior movements esp the Bulova has a cheap but reliable Citizen movement. If you want real heritage buy a Marathon or a CWC.

I realize today we are fatter as a whole, but still, our skeletons are taller and thicker boned. Just one guys observation. Nice watch!

I had the same consideration. In actual use, on the wrist, it is fine as is. The Rolex Explorer at 36mm diameter also has 20mm lugs. While this proportion is a deviation from the original spec, it is not unheard of in beloved field watches designed after WW2. If that is your only consideration, buy one, try it on your wrist around the house for a day, and return it if this specification bothers you in hand, rather than on paper.

Bit late to the party, but some of those imperfections are things I have noticed on original Dirty Dozen examples. Obviously, this wasn't on purpose. It's a case of accidental authenticity. Seriously what is the target audience for these watches? If someone wanted a well know WW2-styled aviator/military watch they would spend money on IWC or Hamilton, which has the name and history recognition. Is it for sports? Because with so many watches around there are many other options that offer better functionality for sports. Is the target audience military? Because most people I knew in the military used G-shocks, Seikos, whatever affordable watch they buy. Occasionally you saw an officer sporting a Breitling/Omega or even someone with an MTM or a Tissot. Seriously I doubt anyone in the military would spend $800-900 dollars for a plain watch.

For now, you have options like CWC, Hamilton (pilot pioneer), Timor, Time Factors (Smiths), and Kuoe (a Japanese microbrand who make Smiths inspired watches). Note that, you can routinely see a 15% discount from list on the VAER website, and occasionally they offer a 20% discount. That helps a bit.

For this price it's competing with the Timor Heritage Field, which looks like a more faithful reproduction of a dirty dozen watch, and by one of the original companies. Hard to prefer the Vaer.
@timlowery71563 жыл бұрын
The Timor is a sweet looking watch and is currently unavailable. Assuming you don't use the 15% off discount that pops up with the Vaer the Timor is still 27% higher, in dollars, than the Vaer. I consider that more than just competing.
@JamesShander2 жыл бұрын
Not really the same company. Someone bought the rights to the name and crowdsourced the funds to make the watch. Hardly the original.
@howard25012 жыл бұрын
@@JamesShander Ah I didn't know that! A point worth making. Same thing always bugs me a little when I look at the Timefactors brands. It's not reeeeeally 'Smiths' any more. Same thing with Timor is it then? Interesting. Anyway, I'm more than happy with my Baltany dirty dozen for a tenth of the price.

I just bought a Kingsbury MS3 Batallion for $179 USD. Much better value than this watch.
@peterkull83543 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I like your Kingsbury MS3 Batallion a lot. 👍👍👍 It is a real - military - inspired time piece like my old GG 113, my Hamilton Khaki handwound or my Freese 53. With its Seiko automatik movement its nice to have, however far away from the class of this Pesseux 7001 driven Vaer. Don´t get me wrong, you got a good and reliable watch that looks the business. The Vaer is a bolt WWW and with this lovely ticker inside is something more for the heart tooooo😊
@Sedge633 жыл бұрын
@@peterkull8354 Peter, you must have missed the word "value" in my post. The Vaer is a lovely watch but in terms of value for $ in no way is it $620 USD a better watch than the Kingsbury. Too many reviews never seem to take in the $ cost of items they show. I guarantee you that the price/value ratio is important to more people than you think.
@peterkull83543 жыл бұрын
@@Sedge63 Hi Simon, didn´t miss your "value" word. I just guess that I value this piece entirely different than you do. I must admit that I´m a real mad watch collector (sorry Russ😊!) as I spend my bucks on Rolex, JL, Minerva, Wittnauer, O&W, MAS, Direnzo and many others. Do you think that an old, used 1973 Hamilton GG -113 Mil Spec Vietnam era watch in mint condition is less valuable than your Kingsbury ?😂

GG-113 (1973) Hamilton with all those blemishes and by faaaaaaar toooooo expensive. Hey it´s just for the fun of it 😂😂😂 I wonder on what kinda junk you spend your bucks on ?
