I found that the extremely low cost of “pay-as-you-go” for medical was wonderful and so cheap in the Philippines. I could see an English-speaking doctor for a very, very, low cost per visit. I could get my blood-pressure medication with NO prescription at any pharmacy as if I was just buying aspirin. I had one hospital visit for a simple follow-up to a procedure I had done in the US before I left. Again, very, very low cost. I didn’t have ANY health insurance from the US or from the Philippines while I lived there for 3 years, and NEVER ONCE needed it or regretted not having it, so why pay monthly for something you rarely use… unless you’re unhealthy. I saved a LOT of money each month by not having it. Of course being very healthy at 60 really makes a difference.

Its all in the last sentence doesn't apply to the many horror stories we hear of friends who fall ill overseas and thought they would save money by skimping on insurance. You don't need house insurance either until it burns down. horses for courses as we say.

@@zorbalight3933 - You are absolutely right about what others have gone through. Then again, I was sharing what I found as a result of not having any insurance. Great content! I am in total agreement about health and fitness. It’s extremely important to stay flexible,aerobically fit and to do resistance training to strengthen muscles and joints. Whether people have money or not it’s really important to contemplate the future in regards to one’s state of health. It wouldn’t be much fun to reach so-called retirement only to discover you’re spending all your time visiting doctors and physical therapy sessions. I’d like to see a video on your thoughts about slow traveling and keeping it moving versus really loving it somewhere and staying. I’m thinking if you park yourself somewhere and after six or eight or 10 months you really like that people know you at the local restaurants and maybe you’ve met some people that you meet up with on a semi regular basis and maybe you’ve made your apartment a little more like home with small decorations. It would be kind of sad to pack up and leave for no other reason other than you are committed to keeping it moving. Suddenly David Carradine in Kung Fu comes to mind lol.

One Direction, That is a great question. Is slow travel or parking your life in one place better? I think everybody is different. But I don't think you can knowingly answer the question until you have tried both for enough time to know the real differences. When I first left the USA I was in India for about 3 years. I enjoyed getting to know people and having routines in a place I knew well. That was great. I also lived in one place, the USA, for my entire life, before I left the USA in 2007. For me, slow traveling just feels better overall. But I can't speak for everyone. Great idea for a video though! Thanks, Dan

Health care in the US is ridiculous. I just learned that for a person to qualify for Medicare you must spend down your money to $2000 to qualify though you invest your tax money to medicare...That's crazy!!!-. I have health insurance and pays over 700 a month...I got a bill for $900 for my kiddo. According to the insurance, I have a deductible of 1500$. What pissed me off, I not only paid a co pay to the specialist, I then got that bill for a doctor we spent less than 2 mins with who said, this kid has no issue and didn't need a referral. Great advice Dan for less experienced expats. For people who are well off the most important questions are where to invest your money and stock options in order to be in a safe and tax-friendly place. You can buy real estate in several countries if you can afford it and in the case of total loss it should not affect your live style. So in conclusion, you have to tailor made your plan according to your preferences and assets.

Vietnam dental tourism is Ok, i did my crowns there 4 years ago after getting rave reviews on expats social media but weren’t happy with the result given the costs & workmanship & language barriers. We had much better dental & Lasik experiences in Cancun & Playa Del Carmen, MX & the savings helped pay for the whole week trip for a family of 5. And the flight is only 2-hr from Texas in the same time zone. One tip: get the free or up to $60 dental consultation quote from the US dentist & use the same work order to compare shop & verify with oversea dentists. But agrees that most medical care, rental, & college costs in US are out of control, thus smart shoppers use medical tourism, rental location arbitration, & study abroad to as a form of protest with wings & feet.

Is a tough decision, i would based it on family histories on cancer & mental health, which are more accessible in the US. BOUGHT a house in Mexico. BEST DECISION. Rent inflation is a killer!
@VagabondAwake3 жыл бұрын
No offense intended. I agree that buying is a good idea. But I would rather buy in America (or any other more legally property-rights predictable country) and rent in Mexico. I rent out the American house and use the income to rent wherever I want to live in the world. That takes care of the rent inflation problem without taking the risk of owning in a country where property rights are less predictable.

Great video. Good advice. One comment: while buying real estate abroad can be a bad idea, it can also work out if you know where you want to retire. Real estate cost is going up faster than inflation in the third world as incomes rise. Just look at the cost of real estate in The Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, KL, etc. now versus 15 years ago. I'm glad that I bought in Manila when I did. Of course, if you are unsure of location, don't have the cash, etc., then renting is for you.

This is great advice. I follow these warnings as my way of life.This isThe way I was able to travel or live in Paradise in Hawaii for almost 40 years is by eliminating responsibilities. Most medicare advantage program s cover urgent care for a small co pay. If you are living overseas and a catastrophic event happens they will get you back to the USA ASAP and take care of you there. Madicare type premiums are about $150 a month. Most plans have no more than $5000 to $ 10000 anual Max co payment very affordable. Like you said you may have to make several trips to USA a year for medical safety and qualification.

We think moving abroad will allow us to live on our social security and savings accounts, and leave our retirement accounts alone to grow until 72…..that’s huge ! If we average 7.2% a year for 10 years, that doubles our money ( I know….no guarantees on earning 7.2% but in a moderate mix of stocks and bonds historical numbers keep us optimistic).
@VagabondAwake3 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Way smarter than trying to time the market. :-)

- Depends on your retirement age & horizon & timing, at 60 & up, conservative investments don’t yield more than 5% in their best years, could even go down in the worst years.
@bananapatch91183 жыл бұрын
@@warrendarable That is a conservative mix and yes, if you are in the market it can go down. My father and grandfather both ran NY stock exchange firms for 40 years each. As they used to say, if you want income, buy growth. If you dont want market exposure then a spia may be more appropriate, but they do have internal rates of return that are still historically low.

Thank you so much for such great advices and without conflicts of interest. Could you make a video on travelling during pandemic , what would be the best vaccine to travel around the world compared to what would be life travelling without vaccine. Thank you and have a wonderful day !
@VagabondAwake3 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea Diane. Let me give this some thought. I have a feeling that in about 3 to 5 years, most countries will drop vaccine requirements once the world reaches herd immunity. But everyone in my family (and Qiang's family) is vaccinated because we have 2 medical doctors in the family and we trust their knowledge. But even if I was ant-vaccine, I would still get the vaccine because 3 to 5 years is an eternity in my life. I would not be willing to give up travel for 3 to 5 years. Thanks for commenting! Dan

@@VagabondAwake - or plan around those 3-5 years travel to places that don’t have vax & quarantine requirements (reasons: religious & medical & too young exemptions) until then. If is North Americans, nearby Colombia & Mexico & most Caribbean’s are open & have great deals with most hotels/planes 1/3-1/2 capacities.

Best "INFLATION STRATEGY" is to BUY a house. Avoid renting.
@VagabondAwake3 жыл бұрын
I would rather buy in America (or any other more legally property-rights predictable country) and rent in Mexico. I rent out the American house and use the income to rent wherever I want to live in the world. That takes care of the rent inflation problem without taking the risk of owning in a country where property rights are less predictable.

I've yet to meet anyone who moved out of the country to "retire" who did not ultimately regret it. Most of these folks were dreamers slightly delusional who did not consider seriously health/medical issues, problems with taxes and other day to day issues out of country. They all come back eventually for mostly medical care. I had a family member build a house in Mexico, stupidly did not live there first before going all in, and now can't sell because no running water or electricity, has a generator, solar, and has various green water, clear water and other water systems constantly needing maintenance. Just be careful and know what you are getting into.

We must travel in different circles? No offense, but I think Richard's thought are more accurate. But thanks for watching and commenting. Dan

@@VagabondAwake Understood; I was just expressing my personal experiences of knowing family or friends who moved out of the country only to turn around a few years later and come back mostly because they could not get the same healthcare and/or the places where they lived were lacking in basic amenities. Also a number of folks I know went to Mexico to drink (a lot!) and play golf and eventually returned when their health deteriorated. I personally have dreamed of living in Italy or Spain even if just a limited time. I think the biggest mistake my relative made who built a house in Baja and tried to move there was she did it impulsively without first renting for a few months then going slow. As a result she is stuck with a beautiful home she'll be luck to sell, but will never get her money back . For me, I'd rent first and if I liked would buy already built and working home. Cheers.
@irvinemuscle3 жыл бұрын
@@richardparker1338 I have a relative who was successful and happy but impulsive and jumped into it without going slow and making sure the fit was right. Yes you are correct, the folks I knew who went to Mexico just went to get drunk (already were anyway) and gold....essentially escaping something.....don't go to escape go to start a new good adventure.

I think some expats go to a foreign country expecting everything to work the same as their home country and that their lifelong learned values will translate easily. Owning land and a home is an “American dream” but may not make as much sense when the rents and cost of living is so low. The pace of life in many of these cheap locations is slow and you have to have patience. If you only buy imported western goods and east western foods then the cost of living many not be as low as you thought. As Dan said, do your research and realize that what you experienced as a vacation traveler will not tell you what you need to know as a resident in a foreign country.

There are tons of resources on Medical Tourism online. Just start Googling and reading. But once you find the right doctor and hospital for your specific disease, I suggest you go direct rather than through some third party organization that marks up their prices.
