Agree with Koh Phangnan as a 'Top 10'. Been there many times. Many Europeans. Remember staying there and hearing on our beach languages such as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Swedish and some English. Brilliant place. Full Moon, yes, but so much more.

My criteria for a "Best Beach" are: 1) snorkeling and 2) shade. The shade can be trees, umbrellas, or a restaurant. My days of spending time in the sun are long over. The beach at our hotel on Koh Lipe, Thailand would qualify.

Common in Asia, getting to a public beach and the only shady spots are taken by picnic tables that are being rented out.

@@-whackd In Thailand it is typical for the beach to be lined with thousands of umbrellas with beach chairs. You can rent the chairs for the day very cheaply. Vendors sell excellent seafood to eat. Thais, and myself, use the shaded beach chairs. Only westerners are lying in the sun. I avoid beaches without the umbrellas.

Surprised you didn’t mention the RaiWai area in the south of Phuket, it would be my choice for Phuket. It’s not far to Phuket Town and has a few incredible beaches, very good nightlife and quiet a few great restaurants and enough daytime activities and generally a great vibe!

I have been to both Maldives and French Polynesia( Le Taha'a. Moorea, Tahiti) but not to any Southeast Asian beach except La Union, San Fernando, Philippines and the beach in Los Angeles( I think Santa Barbara) when I am from the Philippines. I am just saving the best for the last, Southeast Asian countries and maybe Australia. My criteria will be how fine are the sand, not much sharp small stones and should be plenty, not washout sand, snorkeling and how clear the water is. Sand in Maldives is simply fine and abundant, not wash out to the sea, you can run back and forth with no sand hurting you

Koh Samui is also my first Choice if i had to choose a Beach, but Chiang Mai is much better that Koh Samui, and i am staying there right now. My plan is to stay there for two more weeks before i head for Phuket and visit my family from Norway. You sould check Chiang Mai, because a report from Thailand is not compleate if you dont have this city in it.

Bali just recently (November 2022) made changes to retirement in Bali. They require an Astronomical amount of money to be put in a bank and left alone while there. It’s called Second Home retirement. Many expats were highly upset about the changes. I’d look into it before you decide to retire in Bali.

Great report, Dan. I'm sad to hear about the taxis being so expensive in Phuket. When I was there, they were rather affordable. Another option would be tuk-tuks which are cheaper than taxis. Will you be doing a similar report as far as the best places to live in Latin America?

Phuket taxis are run by a mafia. This has been going on for years and the local authority hasn't done anything to fix the problem.

El Nido: amazing place. Far, far, far from everywhere else. Whe I was last there, it was an 8-9 hour mini-bus ride from Puerto Princessa (and back in 2015 when I was there, the electricity service was run by diesel generator and so costly that it shut off every night for a few hours!!!). No place to retire, but it belongs on the 'Top 10' visit list.

On Phuket, I also recommend the beach area right near the airport... and if you hop on your scooter and head north, you're soon away (like 20-30 minutes) from the built-up area and can enjoy miles and miles of beautiful almost-completely-empty beaches as far as the eye can see.

I have vision issues which preclude using anything except public transportation or tuk-tuk's, or taxis.
