Get warm this winter with an EXTRA 30% off your first order with my code MORGAN : bit.ly/thredUP... (Offer expires 01/31/21. Applies to US & Canada customers only. See site for full terms). This video is sponsored by thredUP!
I had a great time thrifting online, and was honestly shocked by how much I loved some of the pieces (hello to my new daily wear skirt for eternity). There were a couple duds that I didn't care for (and didn't show in the video), but I just returned them, which thredUP makes very easy. If you have some holes in your wardrobe, give them a try, you have nothing to lose!
(Unless they are literal holes in your clothes, you should darn or patch those!)

@@StarlingofAzerath I have an honest question: since reenactors often talk about how women wore open crotch seams on their drawers to make it easier to use the bathroom under voluminuous skirts, can you comment whether wearing closed-crotch leggings/pants gives you any trouble? Would you say there is a difference due to the volume of the skirts, or perhaps the elasticity of modern leggings?

I always get weird looks when I tell people that I'm wearing more than one skirt. "Why don't you just wear pants?" Because they're restrictive and I can only wear one pair. I live in Canada, I'm not going out in -15 whether with a single layer of thin denim between my skin and the frigid wind just because you would rather look at jeans...

I’m experiencing -15C right now. Can you please describe exactly the layers you’re using? Are skirts ankle length or shin length? Do you wear over knee socks? Etc.., How many layers of wool skirts do you use? And what does your winter coat look like?
@JezabelleAsa
@JezabelleAsa 3 жыл бұрын
@@hotjanuary All of my clothes are all or mostly natural fibres. Any synthetics are blends that I couldn't check in store I repurposed an old wool, knee length coat into an ankle length skirt, that one always goes on top. Underneath, I wear a raw silk petticoat, because it's soft against bare skin, but it holds in the heat like you wouldn't believe. I have a very, VERY, thick petticoat that I made out of a wool blend and a thrifted poncho thing that's also mostly wool; the two are quilted together and very heavy. This layer goes between my over skirt and petticoat and only reaches mid shin because that's where my boots start. The waistbands are all cotton, and start just below my waist and extend to about my hipbones, to keep the bulk off of my waist; my coat covers my hips, so I don't really need a warm layer in that area. All of that goes on top of whatever outfit I'm wearing that day... I'm in the process of making a few more light petticoats, hopefully they'll help with updraft when I have to climb over mountains of snow My coat is a wool blend hand me down. I had to resize it, take it in a bit. I added underarm gussets with the fabric that used to be the hood so I can actually lift my arms. The lining is two layers of wool with a polyester batting between, quilted together. All the layers are separate pieces, except for whatever's quilted together, for ease of washing and so I can remove layers on warmer days I usually add a pair of tights before I go out, and if I need to, I'll throw on another ankle length skirt or two... My socks are knit from worsted weight wool. They only go about a centemeter above my boots, which are mid shin. They're dedicated boot socks; when I take off my boots, I take off my socks

I love them! Sometimes just because they keep my pant leg dry when the snow is rather deep. If I fold the hem, it doesn’t crush, but really it’s usually my jeans, and not having wet hems is the best. I imagine they would do the same for short boots over tights.

Finally! At long last, someone who gets it. The walking blanket. I stopped wearing pants years ago because I felt I had more freedom of movement. I'm in Arizona, so layering really isn't a thing. However it can get pretty chilly at night during the winter months, its not always flip flop weather. I wear longest skirts to help keep warm. Not too many people understand the walking blanket thing. Actually I think I need too pull some fabrics out of my stash and make a couple more long skirts 😉

As a woman living in northern Canada, Northern BC and Alberta, the Peace Region. It gets cold. And After baby number 4, My nether regions, were so sensitive, still are btw, to wearing close fitting items, like pants. So I became a dress wearing Lady. fast forward, thirty years. I still wear dresses year round. lol. It is amazing, how when you are natural beneath the skirts, you can still be warm at the same time. My legs aren't ever cold. lol. I should have worn petticoats, but You Tube wasn't around to let me know how much warmer I could have been lol. Also. I built my Cloak 25 years ago. Before Harry Potter made them popular. And it has in interior lining of wool batting. That sucker is good to 40 Below, with No problems. Unfortunately. I couldn't afford wool at the time I built it. So the outer layer is Arctic Fleece. Yup. Plastic exterior, with a wool lining, and a satin over that. All three layers for my Cloak. And I still wear it and use it today. Now I am making changes to my wardrobe. I want a sustainable line of clothing. And I will be doing the Linen, and the Cottons, and the Wools, for my Skirts now. I will be making petticoats, in Linen and Cotton. And plan to Keep those Items, and wear them daily. They will not be made Historically. But they will be Modern Day A line Skirts, or Gathered skirts, Mid calf length. With waistlines. And those seriously cool Deep Pockets, Ladies of the day once wore hidden in the voluminous folds!!

Honestly I've found skirts with layers are way more warm than any pants I've owned. And light skirts are much cooler and easier to move in in the summer. As a trans guy who's gotten to have that experience with women's clothes they're just.... superior. I wish it was more acceptable for guys to wear skirts. @@StarlingofAzerath I have tried a couple of the knit petticoat patterns from the Art of Knitting book, with bad results, 5 other crochet and knit attempts of my own design and finally have come up with a pattern that works. The main issue with the patterns from the book were that they didnt say the thickness of the yarn, and the designs i had didn’t look good. The one im doing now is mainly focusing on the measurements instead of stitch count. I started with the waistband which buttons, and then a few inches of main colour onto it to where i could get it over my hips when connected and then started in the round with some increases to make it go over my hips nicely. If it works out good, I might try to write out what i did and put it on ravelry (probably free or for a couple bucks) either way its going to take a lot of time and yarn to do, but it’s worth it

I'm currently knitting myself a sweater out of acrylic yarn (it's my first ever knitting project so I didn't want to waste any money on it), but for next winter I want to knit myself a very warm petticoat from alpaca yarn. I'm, sadly, highly allergic to lanolin which means I have to spring for the more expensive alpaca but I have borrowed an alpaca yarn sweater before and it was amazing! I just have to make a skirt with it so I can walk around in a soft cuddly blanket all day while keeping warm and looking put together. I will never go back to wearing pants in the winter, skirts are so much warmer and give that over all cozy feel.

This is definitely the year I’ve come to the conclusion that historical ladies were often much warmer than the gents. The baffle effect created by long skirts is tremendous for keeping warm.
@Tina06019

It may not be super-history-bounding of me to admit this, but the difference in warmth between wearing long underwear under trousers vs. long underwear or tights under long skirts is big, and it favours wearing trousers in winter. So for winter camping, I like the Edwardian adventuress’ solution: wearing trousers and boots under just-below-the-knee skirts.

The important question is -- what size skirt does Morgan wear? Answer: It doesn't matter, it will fit on the layers somewhere. I wish I could give her more than one thumbs up.

Cloaks are blankets with hoods and now skirts are walking blankets. Basically clothes are just blankets that are made in a way that frees our hands from holding them. Yes, layering long skirts is the best! But I have a hard time finding them second hand as I am quite tall, so I make a lot myself instead.

I saw the whole dress that Isabella de Toledo/Medici was buried in while studying abroad in Florence! Because her body decomposed in it for years before she was dug up to be studied (her cause of death was widely unknown until then) you can see the indentations of her legs and hands on the skirt of the dress, kinda creepy, but still super cool!

I started using old maxi skirts as a petticoat layer when I am on outdoor duty. I’m a teacher, so on my duty day, I’m outside for about 15 minutes at a time, which isn’t bad, except when it’s -30°C. I don’t like wearing pants when it’s cold out because the fabric feels cold against my skin, and I found that wearing an old maxi skirt and then a fairly full skirt on top of that usually keeps me for more warm than wearing jeans would. Of course I’ve also got a long coat and knee-high boots to wear, but the whole layered skirt thing is so cozy!

Being a Coloradoan the art of layering is essential. I even wear my shorter skirts, dresses, and pinafores over my floor/ ankle length skirts. The more layers/patterns and textures the better (as long as they don't clash of course)

I haven't even started the video. Beyond the thirty second mark. but would like to inject that YES!! I am so grateful I sewed a half Cape in spring! I wear it around the house, when sitting at the computer and especially!! Under my coat! Just flip up the back so you have more of a shawl than a cape and it's the warmest padding ever. Layering is queen

My parents have a large print of that same Bruegel painting hanging in a hallway, I used to stare at it finding weird details all the time like the broken mug handle/pretzel thing on the ground and the kissing couple that look like they're just mushing their faces together. Such a weird nostalgia blast from that bagpipe player lol

Wearing skirts in cold weather is no problem, as long as you dress appropriately. Good shoes, 1-2 layers of woolen stocking, thights and shorts, a good coat, a woolen hat, scarf and gloves keeps me down to -10 Celsius on a still, dry day. If its colder, windy or ice in the air I'll add woolen overpants and a woolen sweater. To me the skirt is mostly to keep the wind and snow out and me looking pretty, but I might try using it more for warmth too. A skirt in wool is on the list.

I used to do civil war reenactments when i lived near chicago and people were surprised how comfortable i was in hoopskirts. Dunno what it was but even in super cold or heat of summer i was very comfortable. Being a teen and buying my own stuff out of funds made working (my parents not only didnt support hobby, they expected me to buy my own tp and shampoo, food, gas, etc so i had a lot of expenses most teens wouldnt) i couldnt afford to outfit myself like i could now. I didnt have a plethora of skirts and petticoats and such. I did turn an old bedsheet into a petticoat, and in winter would layer 2 pairs of thick tights under my bloomers. Still skirts are amazing at holding in heat and breathing. Quite comfortable in below zero and over 90!

Yes to layering! I turned an old summer dress into a petticoat, sized to hide under a black corduroy skirt I have, sadly my only winter skirt (so far). Layer that with cotton socks plus some warm tights over them (yes, double layer socks, I'm a maniac 🤪 ) and my legs are warmer than they ever were with pants. And as a bonus it gives it a pretty nice swoosh! When I go out I also wear at least one undershirt, sometimes two, along with the coat. No snide comments from my "you can't possibly be that cold, stop being embarrasing" parents for wearing more layers if they're underneath 👍 When it's cold we add blankets to the bed, we don't just change to warmer bedsheets and expect them to do all the work. Same principle applies to clothing. Warmer layers, yes, but also, more layers.

The red wool top is made of boiled wool. I recently bought several of them. I will use one to make a peasant waistcoat without having to sew one and will insert a few triangles of boiled wool from another cardigan to make the part from the waist down more like a full circle. It will work for a peasant blazer of all periods!

I watched this, thought it was neat, tried it on a whim with this petticoat-esque skirt I've had for forever and a cute velvet skirt over and I'm not going back. I don't really like wearing pants, even in the winter, and this is such a fantastic solution! And so cute as well! "History bounding," instead of full retro or historical fashion, is exactly what I think I'm going for in my personal fashion.

Thank you so much for introducing me to Thredup! In the last couple of months I have bought several treasures that would have cost me several times what I paid for them anywhere else- including a 100% cashmere vintage sweater that I just paid a whopping $9 for with an additional discount code. I also bought like 5 silk shirts for pennies on the dollar. Everything is in great condition (sometimes still with tags) and the one return I made was super easy. Thank you!

I loved this video. And you inspired me. I've been working from home for nine months and wearing the same grubby clothes. Today it was cold and I got my long skirt, petticoat, turtleneck and black sleevless blouse over the top of it (your velvet bodice inspired that). It's the first time I've gone into my closet for 'work' clothes in nine months. It felt nice to wear something other than grubbies. And the layers were warm. Thanks.

I love thrift stores! 80% of my wardrobe has come from them! And the idea of sewing some shifts might just get me back into sewing! As for the idea of layers of clothing, I went to a RenFaire-style event one January years ago wearing something like a hoppelande which, combined with the underlayers, kept me toasty in the freezing weather. People I talked to were amazed when they quizzed me about it!

I feel so validated by this video. 😉😘 And in gratitude, I give you a super warm cozy layering tip: sweater dresses are a fantastic slip layer! I dress mostly late 1930s- early 1950s and have a couple of V-neck merino sweater dresses that I basically rotate out for every day wear under my cotton and rayon dresses. Super cozy and very similar to the knitted wool undergarments that were commonly worn. With a wool or cashmere cardigan over top and a pair of merino tights underneath and I’m never cold. Yay!

Now that's an idea, wearing long skirts to go out in winter...! As I never do that for some reason; I always wear long skirts at home (the most comfortable clothing, by far! Jeans suck...), but to go out, I always change into leggings + short skirt ;) I guess it's mainly not to stand out for the wrong reasons, as no one wears skirts, especially not long skirts, in public around here (apart from gypsies and African immigrants, which is fine but I'm neither)... Maybe I need to try it :)
