Vajrakilaya and his mantra is important in our modern world - since Vajrakilaya is the activity of all the Buddhas. He is the wrathful Heruka emanation of glorious Buddha Vajrasattva. At the same time, he is the ultimate expression of Bodhichitta and compassion and love.

The literal translation of Sanskrit mantra:
Om Vajra Kili Kilaya Sarva Vighnam Vam Hum Pey
Vajra: Vajra, in Sanskrit, has both the meanings of “thunderbolt” and “diamond.” Like the thunderbolt, the vajra cleaves through ignorance. It also connotes “swift” or “instant”
Kili - Kila : in Sansrit कील; IAST: kīla for a three-sided peg, stake or knife, and as Kili associated with Quick Activity, Quick Action, Strength - as in the small three-cornered tent peg that can secure a tent against the worse weather. But also “staking” quickly or pegging instantly.
Kilaya - VajraKilaya is the name of the great One, in this a form of Vajrakila (which means Thunderbolt (quick) to “Spike” or nail down - as in transfixing our obstructions to Enlightenment.
Sarva - Sarva (सर्व) rSanskrit - Sarva (सर्व) refers to “(the attainment of) everything”
Vighnam: Noun. विघ्न • (vighna) m. a breaker, destroyer. an obstacle, impediment, hindrance, opposition, prevention, interruption, any difficulty or trouble.
Vam: (Bam in Tibetan) is the seed syllable of Vajrakilaya. Vam is the bija, or seed, sound of the sacral chakra. When chanting the mantra, vam, the power of the sound vibrations is believed to cleanse this chakra, which is the energy center of creativity
Hum: Hum connotes “method and wisdom” or “Compassion and comprehension of Shunyata”
Pey (Phet, Phat): “cutting through” or “cut!” - as in cutting all obstacles to success, siddhis and Enlightenment.
Typically, online you'll find this mantra chanted in the Tibetan version:

Vajrakilaya's mantra is publicly available in many forms, including by various teachers. Only his Sadhana and self-visualization specifically requires empowerment and transmission of sadhana. His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche indicates the main requirement is Bodhichitta intention. However, always be guided by your own teachers. Some lineages and teachers may advise differently.

Amazing, as usual. Curious about the pronunciation though. It says Sanskrit. But Phat is pronounced "pay". Isn't phat pronounced like "pot" in Sanskrit?

Thanks for watching, and your excellent question. On advice of several Tibetan teachers who transmit these mantras to students, even if we use the Sanskrit pronunciation (usually preferred), the word Phat (or Phet as it's sometimes spelled in transliteration) is usually aspirated with a "P-heh!" sound which in singing usually sounds like Pey (aspirated h is difficult to sing). The actually pronunciation is usually a hard "p" sound followed by an immediately aspirated huh (breath expelling aspiration) with 'eh" or "ey" after the aspiration followed by a soft "tuh" sound. As in "P-huh-ey-tuh!" (but fast, not slowly chanted out as four syllables) or sometimes "P-huh-ah-tuh." This is very difficult for most practitioners, so even when Sanskrit mantras are transmitted, many teachers transmit the sound as P-Hey! (which certainly, in singing or fast chanting, loses the aspirated h) - as in Pay or Pey. P-hat means "to cut" and for that reason the syllable is usually slightly "louder" as a finish, so it definitely sounds like a loud "Pey!" especially when the mantra is speed chanted.

On our main website we always have more "in depth" features. He is, the Heruka of the Activity (Karma family), primarily blue in color to symbolize that he cools the poison of Anger. Here are some from that feature: "His other attributes also “visually inform” the meditator of his powers to overcome the delusions: Heruka wings, wisdom flames, three faces - blue representing enlightened mind, red representing enlightened speech, and white representing the enlightened body of the Buddha - six arms representing the six paramitas, with feet stomping on the demons of obstacles to our realizations. (How powerful is that!) Yet, most iconic is the Kila (Phurba) - the sharp weapon that cuts all the demons of anger (hate), delusion (ignorance) and attachment (greed.)" Is it BAM or VAM ?

Hi again, and thanks. Bam is Tibetan lettering while Vam is the original Sanskrit. There isn't an equivalent Tibetan character, so B is the mostly commonly substitued letter. For instance Vajra is normally Benza and Vajrayogini is often Bajrayogini. The essence is the same. If we say visualize the seed syllable Bam or Vam -- the teacher means the same thing, which is to visualize the first letter as the seed of Dharmakaya aspect of the Yidam. (one is just Tibetan, the other Sanskrit) So, you choose based on the language you're practicing. In English we'd have to visualize the seed syllable as three letters VAM (instea dof one character) because we use an alphabet system, so we have to combine letters to transliterate Sanskrit. It gets complicated. For example the Vajrasattva Mantra in Sanskrtit starts: Om Vajrasattva samayam While in Tibetan it transliterates as: OM BENZAR SATO SA MA YA Hope that helps.

Thanks for your question. Pey is Tibetan and Phat is Sanskrit, although many teachers, even when transmitting the Sanskrit use the Pey pronunciation, since the aspirated p-hat (which sounds like a sharply exhaling breath p-ha(rt) -- which is hard p sound, aspirated h sound (not f as in the English ph, I usually transliterate it as p-hat so people don't automatically pronounce like pheonix.) followed by a shart a(r)t -- I put an r in there because it usually has the sound of a rolling soft art as part of the tuh (or t) sound. SYllables in Sanskrit each have their own sounds, and there are no compound letters (like ch or sh or th. If you see th it means hard t followed by an aspirated huh sound. It's complicated, so in our early videos (like this one) we simplified by leaving it Pey sound, but our later videos we do it fully in Sanskrit. Hope that helps. @BuddhaWeekly Actually, I'm talking about Sanskrit. I know Tibetan pronouncing it is different. I'm talking about sanskrit one. In Hindi - which has some similarities with Sanskrit - there's a word called BAM (Like Bum) and they call their God Shiva as Bum Bum bolenath, so I thought the right word should be BAM or BUM, also in hindu religion there's a word PHAT. That's why I'm asking. Ultimately, it's the devotion that matters the most. I was just curious to know. Anyway, thanks for the explanation. I appreciate 🙏. Edit : Perhaps you heard the story of Great Atisha and Tibetan devotees that once Atisha fell ill and even after various treatments and medication His illness hadn't cured, so Tibetan devotees or followers chanted medicine Buddha prayer, Atisha noticed that they were pronouncing the mantra little differently, but surprisingly His illness cured completely, so He thought it's because of their pure devotion and trust in the medicine Buddha that His illness was cured.
