Om vaktra lakṣmī parīvāha calan mīnābha locanāyai namaḥ
[whose eyes possess the luster of the fish that move about in the stream of beauty flowing from Her face.]
We have been seeing the meaning of the above mantra.
“Chalan meenabha lochana” - She whose eyes are constantly glancing at her children and showering her blessings upon us. Vasinyadi Vagdevatas have given us a mantra with profound meanings and implications. “Unmesha and Nimisha” - The opening and closing of our eyes are natural to all of us. The Devas are said to never close their eyes (Animesha). It is said that Meenakshi Devi never closes her eyes, her compassionate heart seeking to liberate her children from their ignorance and misery.
sarvŏpakāra karaṇāya sadā ārdra chitta
[Devi’s heart is always pining to get a chance to protect Her devotees]
Devi Mahatmyam
Sri Sankaracharya has also composed such a hymn in praise of Goddess Meenakshi.
nimēṣōnmēṣābhyāṃ pralayamudayaṃ yāti jagatī
tavētyāhuḥ santō dharaṇidhararājanyatanayē ।
tvadunmēṣājjātaṃ jagadidamaśēṣaṃ pralayataḥ
paritrātuṃ śaṅkē parihṛtanimēṣāstava dṛśaḥ ॥
[O! Daughter of King of Mountains! Wise men say that the universe is annihilated and re-created by winking of Your eyes. But, I think that the entire is universe is protected by You, by not winking Your eyes]
Saundarya Lahari 55
“O mother! I have never seen you close your eyes! I believe that it is for the protection of others.” All the poets in this universe say that “if thou close thy eyes, the world will be engulfed in flood and when thou open thy eyes, the world will be created.” This is how the poets all praise thee. It is said that long ago Himavan (a personification of the Himalaya Mountains) under took tapas (Spiritual austerities) for a long time. He desired that Parameshwari (the supreme goddess) should be born as his daughter. The Himalaya Mountains is an inanimate object. But Devi, who is the Divine consciousness is present in the both animate and inanimate objects, wanted to grant him his deep yearning. She took birth as Parvathi Devi. “O Devi, you shine as the divine consciousness in the both animate and inanimate objects in the world. Closing of your eyes is the dissolution and opening of your eyes is the creation.” Both creation and dissolution arise from the eyes of Devi. In Vedanta it is called the “Shrishti Drishti Vaadam” When we close our eyes the world is unknown for us. We experience the world only when our eyes are open. In the absolute state of existence, with a mental attitude above and beyond sense perceptions, this phenomenal world does not exist. This is called Srishti Drishti Vaadam. This argument is not suitable for people like ourselves. Sri Shankaracharya aligns this Vedantic doctrine to Devi. This doctrine can also be explained as
Om unmeṣa nimiṣotpanna vipanna bhuvanāvalyai namaḥ
[She who crates and annihilates worlds with the opening and closing of her eyes]
When her eyes are open, creation occurs. When her eyes are closed floods engulf the world. Devi never closes her eyes, her compassion does not allow her to do so, as it would result in the destruction of all the creatures in this world. She stays alert, her eyes always open like those of the unblinking fish. Shankaracharya Swamigal marvels at this attribute of Devi. We are continuing to hear the description of her compassionate glance.
dṛśā drāghīyasyā daradalitanīlōtpalaruchā
davīyāṃsaṃ dīnaṃ snapaya kṛpayā māmapi śivē ।
anēnāyaṃ dhanyō bhavati na cha tē hāniriyatā
vanē vā harmyē vā samakaranipātō himakaraḥ ॥
[O! Auspicious Parāśakti! Please look at me, who am far away from You and in a miserable condition. Shower Your compassion on me through Your beautiful and lengthy eyes appearing like fully blossomed water lilies. By doing so, it is no loss for you like moon shedding his rays both in a forest and in a mansion]
Saundarya Lahari 57
Let us move on to the next verse in the Saundarya Lahari. It is said that the glance of Devi is all encompassing. There is no object or creature in the world that is not within the compass of her vision. Her look rests upon each worm and blade of grass and her eyes take in even Brahma. Her eyes are aware of the qualities of each object. She considers each object, each creature to be her very own. When Devi glance upon us with eyes that have the beauty of a fresh and slightly open, long petalled lotus flower, we are in bliss. The eyes of Devi shine with the beauty and luster of a fresh blooming lotus. Devi is the force, the energy pervading the universe. I am weak without any strength. I am a sinful weakling. I have no redeeming qualities, and I have not performed any spiritual austerities. Sri Sankaracharya describes himself thus, identifying himself with a common devotee

Description Continued.... “O Mother! Thou bless everyone, showering your grace impartially on every creature. O Mother! Include me also in the shower of thy grace, do not ignore and abandon me. Immerse me in the grace of your compassionate glance”. It is not enough to cast a desultory glance at me, once in a while. You must bathe me in your love. I shall be gladdened and my life will reach its goal. You will not be lessened in any manner if you bathe me in your compassionate glance. We are hearing the mantras of Devi which gives a detailed description of her divine beauty and attributes, from head to toe. We shall hear more in the coming episodes.
