I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Thank you. So good to know the story behind this timeless song. It will be with humanity for a long long time. I am so glad that the younger ones are now discovering it. This song and Bobby deserve its place in history of humanity. It cannot be forgotten. Let the legend lives on forever. Thanks to modern technology, many iconic songs are coming out into the open once again.

@@ValenciaGamble it's not only the voice, it's also the words of the song. Back then music was felt not just heard. Music got into your heart and soul. I wish more young people could know how wonderful the music really was. This is why older folks don't really like the music of today. It's just hard and almost cold. I'm not saying the artists today are not talented, it just doesn't touch you the way it used to.

Bobby was a contra tenor. There is probably one born in each generation. They are not always found. So I guess you could say he was touched by the angels. He doesn't have to force it. He doesn't need auto tune. He has the talent and the brains to know how to use his voice. He also had a head cold for this live performance.

Audio only for his For Your Love, I Need A Girl, both record and live of Summertime, great live version of My Prayer as well. RBs were featured on a weekly music show 1964-66 called Shindig. Lots of b/w video clips of varying film quality from their live performances. My favorite might be them on I Need Your Loving Everyday. Bobby was ridiculously talented, as was/is Bill. They both sang with such feeling, sharing their emotions, it always felt personal. Still hurts my heart that Bobby is gone.

Absolutely loved your reaction! “Unchained Melody” was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' (1955). The lyrics were written from a prisoners perspective longing for his loved one he had left behind. Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003) and Bill Medley make up the Righteous Brothers . In 1965 on a live television program (The Andy Williams Show) Bobby Hatfield gave one of the greatest live television performances in history. If you want to hear more of their great music, try: “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” which was the most played song of the 20th Century. Also “Soul and Inspiration”, “Rock And Roll Heaven” and “Ebb Tide”, "Somewhere", "My Prayer", "I Believe", "Crying in the Chapel” and "Only You".

I said this on the reaction video to you lost that loving feeling but if you can find the version where they talk before he takes the stage not only do they talk about the fact they're not actually brothers and a fan said "you all some righteous brothers!" , but, they also talk about the fact that bobby wanted to do this song and the other brother didn't think it would be a hit so said do it solo on the b side of the record! Biggest hit and played song they've ever had and only one brother in it the one that's usually in the background!!! Love seeing you get into the music for what it is though! Was priceless seeing you disover the righteous brothers!!!!!
