@@possisvideos Nope, this is not the Imperial. It's a Steinway and actually she is omitting some notes there to stress the basses. Which is by no mean any critique - she is an amazing musician who feels exactly the right things to do. This sonata can never be played any better!

I have Heard these 2 sonatas maybe hundreds of times, and EACH time it feels like something new and fresh. I never tired of Rachmaninoff.. THere is something magical about it much in a way like JS Bach organ Works.

Im not sure why this sonata was less loved than the 2nd one. What an absolute masterpiece, it has some of the most intense and beautiful moments of any piece i know of.

He probably worked it all out in his head, with several iterations, until he got something that he was more or less happy with. Then he wrote it down and of course, may have made corrections and rewritten pages.... This sonata was heavily revised and cut down from some 45 minutes to about 35 minutes.

I like the tempo. Most of time when I'm hearing this part 2:32 to 2:44 with others pianists, I find this too slow or too ''square''. I love fluid interpretation reminiscent of water, contrast and the typical vibration of the romantism. It's a subjective opinion, but I wanted to share it. Valentina is so good, so fast, so clear, that she tends to go too fast, and not have much speed variation. It is the contrast between fast and slow and loud and fast that the piano has to offer. Yuja Wang also does this. If you listen to Arthur Rubenstein, who was not an accurate pianist in comparison, the one thing he did have is a more relaxed feel. I love her touch so much.

She definitely played it too fast in my opinion. Rachmaninoff isn’t just about speed and technique. Though his compositions are indeed technically demanding it’s the ability to bring out his melodies and textures which matter most of all. Unfortunately I think she loses some of that by rushing through some of the passages here. The musicality of this movement in particular suffered a bit as well. I much prefer trifonov’s interpretation. He gives the listener so much more contrast, emotion, and musicality when playing this piece but particularly this movement.

My favorite interpretation of the 3rd movement. Love it. For the first movement I tend to favor Volodins live rendition that was uploaded not long ago. For the second movement my go to has got to be Denis Burstein. He plays it very slowly yet so lush. But this third movement, it needs fire. And Valentina has the most fire in her interpretation by far!

While the tempo is quicker than what I prefer - yes it's simply my preference - the clarity of playing is astonishing nonetheless and it's a fantastic interpretation regardless. When the Dies Irae theme is in octaves in the bass leading to the recapitulation of the main theme the speed adds much intensity - that being said it works when the pace is slowed at that point a little also.

This is a fine interpretation,best i've ever heard from VL,even if much is on the rapid side and would be EVEN more effective with a touch of ralenti and weight for key moments,(the"galloping"motif fails to register fully).There is a volcanic flow and what we lose in theatre&drama we gain in heady momentum.For once the piano sounds harmonious,allowing some rich voicing.Looking forward to a re-record in...5years..?That would really be something!

You really are at your best when you play Rachmaninoff. If there's one composer you'll go down as one of the greatest interpreters of, its likely to be Rachmaninoff. :) I could hear the music through the veil of the millions of notes Rach tends to write.

This is the better of Valentina's two videos of this Sonata. The other Steinway in the "Secret Garden"'s video (how did they get the rights to her performance, by the way) sounded like a plodding thud every time she hit the base notes, not to mention the movements were chopped to pieces. Also, by the way, Valentina now lives in France and not North Carolina.

I somewhat suspected her decision to move had to do with more than just prices on condos rising faster in Paris than in North Carolina, but I never suspected she was forced out for her political views. I wonder if she went reluctantly (really liked it here in the USA and wanted to stay but had to go), or she just shook the the dust from her feet and moved on. Regardless, I think she's better suited to a cultured environment like France rather than North Carolina where most people think Bach wrote the best Bluegrass in the world.
