Check out my new guitar lesson on how to play ‘Valerie’ as performed by Amy Winehouse. I’ll take you through the song with on-screen chord boxes, progressions, strumming patterns, and tab.
I'm bringing you this song today as an opportunity to introduce some jazzy-sounding seventh chords. The version I transcribed it that which appeared as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of 2006's 'Back To Black'. The song was originally written and performed by 'The Zutons' and Winehouse later recorded a more up-tempo full band version with Mark Ronson for his 2007 album 'Version'
We can keep things easy for you beginners if we capo on the 3rd fret. This brings us into the feel of C major, and so the main progression is C - C - Dm - Dm. If you add in extra notes to the chords (by actually removing fingers) you can create seventh chords which more closely match the original live recording. The only other progression is in the pre-chorus and you can use Fmaj7 or practice your mini-barre F.
The actual guitar part played on an electric guitar is in the key of Eb major. We have some seventh chords in an A-shape for the verse. In the pre-chorus, the guitar arpeggiates some triad shapes. You can play those or look to play the chords being represented. I give you two options for how to play these chords, with the bass note on either the D or low E string.
I also present what I think is the strumming pattern, although I'm not sure I got this one right listening back. It still sounds good though in a 16th note rhythm with some percussive hitting, so give it a try. You can find my lesson on 16th note strumming here - • How to Strum Your Guit...
