Good that you put chains on before it's too late. Also good to put at least one set on the trailer, it helps a lot to keep everything straight when braking. On a hard down hill brake application it helps keep the trailer behind you rather having the trailer trying to pass you! Triple chain sets are much better to keep you going on a hard pull. Once those singles loose traction the inside wheel is sitting and spinning on ice and the chain on the outside tire is in the air not doing anything anymore. Usually if it's worth chaining up, it's worth putting on a set of triples. I used to slap on two sets of triple sided Trygg chains 4-5 times a day for most of the winter, sometimes a set on the steering axle if was raining on the compact ice. Those Tryggs are heavy but you can climb up a tree with them. Get those cam tighteners good and tight and throw those bungie cords away. In over forty years I have never once needed them. Also at the 5:50 mark in the video I can see that the cross link is twisted and the chain needs to be untangled. You can tell by looking at how it sits on the tire and by how the cam tightener is not positioned correctly. Make sure your hardware is installed correctly. This is how chains fly off, do damage to the truck/trailer, and cause accidents. I'm sure you've learned lots since the video was put up. Stay safe brother.
@Materthegreater563 жыл бұрын
Also a tip I learned to get a little tighter from the beginning. At 4 minutes on the video when you hook the two half’s together you throw outside of chain on top of tire toward inside and hook the chain together then pull chain back out and hook outside link.

You can skip the orange bungees if you get the chains tight enough. Put them on like that, drive a few feet, stop. Then open all the cam locks and grab a couple more links on the hooks. You'll probably only need 1 or 2 cam locks after. This procedure is especially important on doubles (or sometimes also called triples) that do the inside and outside tires.
@crazyray42713 жыл бұрын
For most part you are right only thing is you don't have to turn the cams first. Put chains on like normal and as tight as possible. Roll ahead at least 3 rotations. Then re tighten the hooks again. Then after that start with the bottom cam and work up. That my friend will make sure they are tight.

5:55 That chain has a little tangle in it. That's why that 1 cam lock ends up facing the wrong way. Once the tires start rolling, centrifugal force should help keep the cam locks from opening up. @@valeriumoscalu7580 Ya, that's one unwanted characteristic of single chains- while in storage or swinging on your chain rack, they tend to tangle in through themselves. When you lay the chain out on the ground to inspect them, watch those side chains. If they're flipped through, the side chains will mirror each other and are easy to figure out how to pull them back through.

Not sure if it was mentioned but for new drivers chains are meant for ideal roadways and work best when your loaded. Slapping chains on empty big trucks and stepping off into hilly ice covered roads can give you a false sense of confidence, make you spin out and possibly break chains and wrap them around an axle or brake canister in an inopertune location making the situation worse.

Even brand new single chains still sealed in the bag can twist in on themselves... 2 examples of that happening here in this video. Lay them out flat & look for twists b4 u throw them on the tires. The rounded side of the cams should correspond with the curve of the tire tread b4 tightening them. If the cams don't lay flat against the sidewalls, it's twisted. If the curved edge of the cam points toward the tread AFTER tightening, it's twisted... AND centrifugal force could throw that cam back to the loose position when u get rolling & u may lose the chain on the road.

The bungees are a life saver when you're new to these arts and not great at getting them tight. I had to chain up yesterday for the first time outside of practice. Did my best but it still took over an hour and wasn't ideal, but we have lots of rubber bungees in the trucks. When I got to the chain-off area, I could undo all the cams with my fingers, but the bungees kept the chains secure and centered. You always want them put on properly so bungees are unnecessary, but I'd rather have the safety than to rely on having greater skill than I actually do.

Very good video. Its from the field and where it should be from. Good hands on, good stuff. In case you have no spider, 4 short bungee work perfect. After you cam lock, use bungee from sliced angles not hooked straight up and down or straight across. Four short ones work best. Here is how they work best that I found: as you face the tire to chain up... Hook at 9 and the other end of the same bungee goes to 1. Hook the second bungee at 12 (top center) the other end goes to 4. Hook the third bungee at 3 and the other end at 7. The fourth bungee hook at 6 and the the other end at 10. I tend to have more uses for bungee straps like brooms, loadjacks and just overall bundling things. I dont have multiple uses for spiders. One broken leg on the spider and it kinda defeats the idea. Easy to find a short bungee though. Here is what happens on the clock system with the short bungee (12 in.): if one hook pops out, the hook next to it pulls directly in the opposite direction. Clock system does not pull all the slack to one place like a spider...to the center. With bungee Each one is separate and independent while not totally dependent on the other. Believe it or or not there are way fewer snags, less long distance wave and flipping out verses going through the center for overall tension. that is also the reason for using short bungees. spiders, long bungee and pulling to the center creates long air space between hooked ends creating flop and loss of cords. Cleaner and safer and yet to lose a chain. With any of these the center pull is bad idea. When done, still use the bungee for other things.

Ya know I used to say the same thing. However if your planning on literally never chaining in your career then you better NEVER and I really mean NEVER plan on running over I70 through the Rockies. There’s only 3 months out of the year you’re not required to carry chains. Fines go as high as $1100 dollars if you get stuck and block the road. You could be fine one minute and 10 minutes up the road the chain law is in effect. If you continue with out them, don’t be surprised if your chased down. California is worse than Colorado in the amount of chains you require. In all honesty your best bet would be to avoid driving in Winter altogether. That or trying to just run I-10 for the winter. I now think that if it’s REALLY that bad they just shut the roads down altogether. If chains were really that dangerous to run with then it wouldn’t be something that’s commonly done to a point that highways have chain up areas. Again I was like you for a very long time. It doesn’t mean your gonna keep running the rest of your shift, it just means your gonna get somewhere safe, or over the mountain pass, etc. not driving for 5 hours with chains on. To each their own.

I see the chain locks have changed since back in the 70's. We didn't have those cam tighteners where I drive back then. And we just used bungie cords to take the slack out. I found it easier to jack up the axle when putting chains on. One and done, they didn't come loose and have to stop to tighten them a quarter mile down the road. But, everyone has their own way. I just know what worked for me. By the way, I drove cement train with a two axle tractor, not a twin screw.

Some rig moves in remote mountainous areas of northwestern Alberta/northeastern British Columbia required all three sets installed continuously for 700-800km. Glorious times! Sometimes you can chain up on black ice too , depends of circumstances , but safety always first! If snow definitely better to chain up , especially if it's uphill, better safe than sorry, if you don't have spiders you can use regular bungees and just make sure the chains a tightened well and the ends are not playing free around! The recommended speed it's between 20 and 30 mph but suntimes you can drive a little faster sometimes slower! Depends how stable is the truck on the road! It depends how fast you will do it! And how many tires you will chain up! You can do it in one hour also you can do it in two hours!)

Do you have to chain up all 4 drives and trailer?
@L1berty17762 жыл бұрын
Each state varies its chain laws. The shitty part is the time killing to put them ond off on and off. Its a pain in the ass but it saves lives
@harmonymartinez29542 жыл бұрын
We're in 2023 these trucks should be equipped with automatic chains they talk about "safety"so much those automatic chains should have been a thing since 2012 they add all these safety futures on the truck but automatic chains🤦🏽♂️

So which tires you put chains on..? Just all drives and tandems no steere right?
@valeriumoscalu75802 жыл бұрын
Yes , all drives no steer!
@filipeorr78219 ай бұрын
If I chain the forward drive I also do one steer tire. If I chain-up the rear drive only I don't bother chIning-up the steer. When you chain-up the forward drive the truck doesn't turn too well.

So if I understood correctly, the chains are only put on the rear wheels of the truck, we don't put them on the front wheels or those of the trailer!
@valeriumoscalu758011 ай бұрын
Drive tires on the truck! And preferably at least one axle on the trailer, if you put two even better!
@kendrickharding514 Жыл бұрын
What if you can’t drive a few feet? How do you connect them? Tires slide and chains fall off
@valeriumoscalu7580 Жыл бұрын
If you can't drive forward you can drive backward!

В некоторых местах цепи ''перекручены''... Перед тем как бросать цепь на колесо надо разложить на земле и убедиться что не ''перекручена.''
