I don't think Santa Anna was in any position to order destruction of the Alamo AFTER his capture at San Jacinto' But I'll defer to my friend, Alan H., on that question.

Does that mean the barracks we see today was not original in 1836?

The front wall of the long barracks is orginal yes,but the walls behind have been rebuilt

Don't understand how the Republic of Texas and the subsequent state of Texas could let commerce and time run roughshod over this monument to liberty and freedom without taking some steps to preserve it for posterity.

It's about time that a Memorial to the Mexicans troops be set up there. There were 63 troops killed outright on the Alamo battleground, and 50 more died of their wounds in the coming weeks. The Alamo defenders lost 253 illegal aliens from the States.
