Theres more to it (and a good reason why the book is titled "The Book Thief"), but I don't want to spoil it. Warning though, the story is both heart warming, terribly sorrowful, and wrapped up in a bittersweet package.

I must reluctantly back Jake up and point out building near the water like that gets it flooded whenever there is a storm. Water also does damage to wooden structures, so every storm would have been bringing it closer to collapsing around you. EDIT: I immediately regretted backing Jake up.
