In either pretenses it's sad because there's 3 variables; 1# the mother actually cared about the daughter however their parenting methods didn't communicate well with their affection and relationship to the daughter, #2 the daughter wishes her mother would say something like this, indicating that she felt despised, used, and non-existent to her parents, #3 Jennifer resented her parents, and so she just coldly thought of what would sound believable in her connection with her parents.

@@poffydaisy5134 Not to say that you are wrong in thinking this way but I want to offer a solution to your theory (behavior if she were a victim rather than perpetrator). 1) there are three main reactions to a shocking situation: fight, flight, freeze. Screaming would correlate more into fight or flight. Personally, I’m more of a freeze, meaning that my body freezes and I don’t make any noise. 2) going off the theory that she is a freeze type of person, it is also highly probable that shocking information would push someone to somewhat lack an emotional response. 3) idk man I’ve put my phone and remote in the fridge before, that may just be me being scatter brained though. Oh but the behaviors displayed in the video are very much out of the ordinary. They are that of theatrics, the constant looking down and up, the lack of tissue despite sniffling, and the stiffness of her position in the beginning vs the relaxing (edit: not relaxing but rather change in structure?, less boxed but slightly more confident) of her body further in the interview. This is just my opinion and I’m not a profesional in body language.

they called me in to identify my mothers body. i didnt cry. not seeing her body then, no crying when seeing the body at the visitation, no crying when looking at her casket. i was severely SEVERELY in shock. it didnt take til probably a week for me to realize “i’m never seeing her again”… i hate when people state “oh she didnt even cry at her funeral” to say shes a murderer or didnt love her. cause my mom was the greatest figure in my life and i still cry about how much i miss her after 5 years. its called SHOCK. your body goes into a state of numbness and disbelief for trauma. its very common. especially with severe cases of depression

All this caused from yearssss of physical and mental abuse from my parents, so I sympathize in the way that she must have felt during those early times in her life. However, like the comment said, we do not condone her actions and I would never in a billion years hurt my parents as they just wanted the best for me. We are acknowledging that she is human (unlike many other killers) and that she never got the therapy she needed, again, we don’t condone her actions.

The psychology behind this is interesting right? I feel like it's so common for Asian households to expect super scholarly success from their children, because that was also how they were raised when they were children (not that it doesn't happen in other ethnic backgrounds too). But mix that with Western values, and there's this contradiction between success with lucrative occupations and living your dreams; oftentimes, those two do not mesh. Then, the child is met with this difficult choice of pleasing their parents or disappointing them and following their own path. Eventually they can break, like Jennifer. Usually they don't end in murder obviously. I have mixed feelings towards the parents, and no they didn't deserve this. Though it's borderline if not psychological abuse the way some parents act towards their children in regards to subjects like school and grades. I just feel a connection to this story as a first generation Vietnamese American, who faced similar issues growing up, although now I just have severe depression and anxiety and my dreams have been completely shattered and scattered across the pavement. There's so much more to life, and all I did in my childhood was focus on school. Throughout those 17 years of being a young human, I never went to a friend's house to hang out because I was afraid it'd be deemed as slacking on studies. I never went out with a friend to have fun somewhere. I just missed out on a lot of opportunities in general to make memories with people I enjoyed being with. I never once went to a school dance. Getting out of the house and living away from my parents in college led to the best years of my life. Didn't expect to just ramble on and talk about myself but here we are.

You don't just decide to kill, not even just a random person, but the people who raised you in an instant, there was clearly a lot of psychological damage, influence from the people who she associated with and she maybe even had an antisocial personality disorder which would all contribute to this... There's too much complexity to know exactly why someone does this sort of thing, but in her mind, at that point in time, somehow, it was justified.

Should she have arranged the murder? No absolutely not, she should have taken the option to leave the family. But her parents were both fools who don't know how to be parents - no support, no empathy, no upliftment - just stupid commands and rules and milestones. Even with that she was doing well with figure skating but that dream was taken away from her because of injury through no fault of her own. And did the parents have empathy? No. They started harping on her for the next thing. For the record I am from Asia and I know what you think you understand but you don't actually understand. From the day she was a baby this was all she knew - parents who had no empathy and who only had demands. I am certain that her parents themselves were not top students or great athletes, but yet they were able to afford a comfortable life. So why pressure the children to such an extent when you know that even with modest achievement you can have a good life? This is misguided parenting. Imagine if she had more normal understanding parents, she wouldn't be the top in the world but she would have a decent job as a piano teacher, probably married, and probably have her own kids. It's frustrating to me how such a massive change in life circumstance can happen with something as simple as empathetic parenting. I hope that this case teaches people that parenting is not just about demanding things from your children.

From a video I watched about this case(it's in Chinese, a bit hard to translate), her parents are *extremely* strict. They enforce their own dreams that they couldn't achieve on Jennifer, made her attend multiple classes outside of school WHILE maintaining straight As in school. Honestly, I'd believe that it is actually more extreme than what I just explained in words(considering this started since young). Apparently, Jennifer feared what might happen as her grades started to fall and faked her report book/grades, even college applications etc. just to satisfy her parent's ego. There are different amounts of stress everyone can handle, but that seems a bit too much for a child. She found her happiness, in order to keep it, she will need to get rid of what's blocking her way. Of course, I'm not saying that murdering is the right way, but Jennifer was pushed to the extreme. Imagine the endless hours of agonizing anxiety, pain, helplessness and stress she felt.

Jennifer, in my opinion, snapped, and could no longer handle the pressure. Different people respond to this abuse and pressure in different ways, and unfortunately, she responded like a psycho. Again, she deserves every bit of her punishment, but it's hard not to feel empathy towards her. I’m a retired LEO and was a criminal investigator. I can tell you from experience from questioning someone who has been involved w this type trauma they are not as articulate and calm as she was as she told her story. 90% of victims can hardly speak while crying. No, sobbing. It takes a while to get a full story from them because they’re replaying what happened in their minds and while they do they relive the horror and sobbing again. It’s not as easy as her story was. It’s very hard as the person having to question and to push them for info so we can try and find the offender or make the case. We know how hard it is and I hated having to make them tell the story over & over because we know it’s just horrifying for them to relive it over & over again. I hated it but it was necessary. It’s very easy to pickup on lies when they’re as clam as she was under the circumstances.

All criminals act with reason, no matter their psychological state. That reason can be completely illogical and irrational, but in the moment that they do the crime, it makes sense to them or they make it make sense. In the case of people with antisocial personality disorder for example or other psychological disorders, the person sometimes literally does not have the ability to empathise or sympathise with others so their reason is based solely on what is advantageous to them and on their base desires, but that's still a motive. There is no such thing as "evil", there is not such thing as an inherently "good" or an inherently "bad" person, just people people reasoning and doing things based on those reasons and what they think they should do. These reasons are affected by everything, other people, mental problems, trauma, etc... but no one is born "evil", no one does anything because they're "evil". Just based on what they've been taught is right or wrong and what they can feel is right or wrong. Even most people who feel high amounts of empathy, with the right circumstances can be brought to do horrendous things. And people who don't feel or feel low amounts or empathy can do much worse. To prevent these kinds of things happening for people with empathy, they need to be brought up in the right environment, be taught how other people feel, made to understand what is right and wrong and to avoid psychological damage. For people with low empathy it's more complicated. But there is no "evil". Just people doing things based on they think they should. And sometimes they are very very wrong. Some come to regret it right afterwards. Some after rehabilitation and therapy. But some don't and some can't, and that's most likely because they are broken inside. But yes, people don't do things for no reason, people aren't ever random, they always have a motive for everything they do, small or big, bad or good.

yeah, actually a lot of criminals are locked up because they acted out as a result of untreated trauma, mental disorders/illnesses, etc. Many prisons don’t really accommodate any of that though so instead of issuing therapists or other professionals to help prisoners improve upon their wrongdoings and learn the effects/possible effects of their actions and repent for them by giving back to the community or something, they’re just treated like shit and end up in prison again after they’re released

But obviously with the right education and drugs, these desires and emotions can be controlled or suppressed; for example people with ASPD can be taught morals which are usually inherently known by most and for example people with bad paraphilias or other desires can be taught that it's wrong and can even be treated. I think it has something to do with their experience as well. In the 50's moving forward they thought that they could just get a job, work hard and you'd be successful. Then the industries started requiring a minimum educational attainment. Then they realized how important it is to get an education. i read an article written by one of jennifers classmates, she said he can't live in that house bc of trauma (rightfully so), so he lives with relatives nearby, he lost both his wife and daughter, is depressed and has ptsd, cant sleep and if he does, has nightmares about the incident. he'a been trying to sell the house for years now and no one's buying it. he stopped gardening and lost his job due to brain damage and overall will have lifelong trauma forever. jennifers brother moved out, got an engineering degree, and cut all contact with the family. he does not want to associate with this situation ever and lives his life elsewhere. so the dad is truly alone.

"Tiger parenting" on the extreme spectrum probably entails treating children worse than how some prisons treat their prisoners or how some tyrannical dictators treat their subjects. There's violence, mental abuse, a drastically imbalanced power dynamic both authoritatively and physically (compare an adult's strength to a child), and I must imagine many other things. Not justifying murder, but if I were to be put through a childhood that could be akin to torture, I definitely could empathize with someone's desperate attempt to kill to end their pain.

Growing up in a tiger household is psychologically scarring where you belong to nothing but your parent's wishes and dreams. Her parents literally planned her life for her from when she was born until they die. If she left, she wouldn't know what to do. Her parents would most likely guilt her for her choices (no matter what she picked). It's very different growing up in more Western households where it's normal to see 16 year olds to up and leave.

She had a boyfriend prior to her dad’s ultimatum, it sounds like she had a decent relationship with her brother, and she had many friends who she could reach out to. This was NOT a Gypsy Rose Blanchard situation-medically abused since infancy, failed by every mandated reporter she met, and having seen her mother manipulate police to get her returned to her abuser. Jennifer Pan had options. She wanted to be rid of her parents AND get half of their life insurance.
