Just a note for you guys : Colonel Stauffenberg’s son Berthold retired as a General in the present day German Army (Bundeswehr) in 1994, At the time he was the longest serving soldier in the German Army having served for 38 years, enlisting in the old West German Army upon its creation in 1956. In an interview he recalled that it was hard for the first few years for his family, upon his fathers death his mom who was pregnant was interned in a concentration camp and he and his siblings were sent to a foster home and were even given new last names as the von Stauffenberg name (von is an old mark of the German aristocracy, Colonel Stauffenberg was a Count, one of the oddities of Nazi Germany was in its legal recognition of former Imperial German titles of nobility) wasn’t even allowed to be in use for the duration of the war as it was marked as a name of a traitor’s family, even post war when the family was reunited and reassumed their family name they were treated by some as traitors. Regardless he joined the newly created West German Army and served his country well, his father would have been so proud of him.

About the attempt. Three things led to the bomb failing. 1) the meeting was moved , which wouldn't have mattered with two bombs. But 2) the second bomb wasnt armed. Which wouldnt have mattered with careful placement, but 3) the bomb got moved on the other side of the table leg, which shielded Hitler. If any 1 of those happened, history would be different.

The film is very accurate, according to historians. There are several documentaries about the actual event. In this movie, the actors were resembling the real persons they were playing, for most, too. Of course there are a few inaccuracies, but very minor ones.

Yes, there’s films about Africa during WWII. One is titled “Patton” with George C Scott as the title role. Scott is famous for “Dr. Strangelove” with Peter Sellars. Patton has some great action and attempts to show, let’s keep in mind, most Hollywood bio flicks are fictional and at producers whims, his faults and victories. I keep a copy in my library.

I went to Berlin over the summer, and one place we went to was the Resistance Museum, which included the place where Stauffenburg was executed. It’s very somber to stand in the exact spot where this near complete assassination attempt almost succeeded. It is also a very interesting that Tom Cruise looks eerily like Stauffenburg in the photos from the side.

You asked why nobody tried to just shoot Hitler. Actualy they tried that too. One Officer with a gun in his pocket tried to shoot Hitler in a museum where he wanted to see enemy weapons the German army had ceased. But instead of 2 hours Hitler only stayed 10 minutes and the officer did't had a chance to just shoot him. Just a year before the war, a citizen from my hometown built a bomb on his own and placed it in Munich at the restaurant where Hitler wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the coup attempt of his party from the early 20s. But here also Hitler didn't stayed the planed time and was gone, when the bomb exploded.

Much of this movie gets it right historically. I can't imagine the balls it took to attempt this...and it came so close. Approximately 7000 people were arrested and 5000 people died as a result of the bomb attempt as Hitler's fury and bloodlust was fulfilled.

I can't imagine the stress Stauffenberg must have been under. Walking around with a live bomb, not knowing precisely how much time you have. Then not going to the scheduled conference room. Having to rely on a very well timed phone call. Then he had to make it out of the Wolf's Lair. I always wondered what would have happened if when Stauffenberg entered the conference, Hitler engaged him in conversation or insisted the current presentation be stopped and made Stauffenberg give his briefing with the time ticking away.

46:55 As a German, I have written the following text in my constitution. In memory of what happened in Germany between 1933-1990 and must never be repeated. We have done a lot of suffering to others, and became victims of our own mistakes. After 1949, we tried to make a new start, NOW as a democratic european peace state which does not leave hunger, suffering and hardship in other states cold. (The text inside the Constitution or "Basic Law") "Against the background of the failure of the Weimar Republic and twelve years of National Socialist reign of terror, the Basic Law is intended to establish a constitutional free democratic basic order. It had also acted for those Germans who between 01 September 1948 and 02 October 1990 were denied participation in its shaping. Understanding them as part of the constitution the Parliamentary Council in Bonn gave itself this Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany."

Hitler used to have a moustache like the Kaiser's but he had to cut it like that so it would fit in the gas mask during WWI. Tresckow did not retrieve the liquor bomb himself, he sent an aide to do it, poor soul. Tom Cruise's salute looks american not german but at least he tried to make the character believable. The 2 german actors who have played Stauffenberg in movies may not be famous but they did a much better job. I really liked your reaction, your comments and the way you followed the events.

There were over 20 attempts on Hitler's life and all failed. That convinced him all the more that his cause was just and that a higher power was watching over him. His delusions got worse with time. The only person to succeed in killing Hitler was himself. A great film with superb actors.

I don't know how true to history the scene 27:00 was where Goerdeler was told by Beck that a warrant was out for his arrest. It seems a bad idea for Beck to go ahead with a meeting where all the key conspirators would be in one place, knowing Goerdeler was under suspicion and probably under surveillance.

Talking about "Reserve Army" is bit different in this context. Its not meaning reservist as in old conscripts recalled to service but troops in reserve, guard and occupation duty without assigment to any "active army" like Army groups on west and east. For example the reserve battalion in Berlin in this movie represent a rotating battalion from Wehrmachts only "official" elite Panzer grenadier division "Großdeutschland", all volunteers even in the end, who are placed as "wacht regiment" aka guard battalion in Berlin. This can also be seen in uniforms of the men, they almost all have close combat ribbons, most in silver, easternfront campaining medals and so on. So far from incapable reservists

you also could have watched the german translation (which is, and i say that as a german, much better than the american one. by the way the german cruise voice is eitherway much better than his original voice) and watch it with subtitles. than you would have the hole "german experience". Also by the way a buch of people in that film are real germans. Even a real historic relative of Stauffenberg is in it and plays a role (a lot of people dont know that)

I really liked this movie..I love based on true events/historical movies..& I too agree..It gets U so frustrated at Gen Ulbrict..who caused the delay in start-ing the coup..Bcaus they sooo close to pullng it off...But I also encourage U to check out the investigative series “Huntng Hitler”...The show explores the very real possibility that Hitler faked his suicide/death & escape to So America (as thousands of high rakng Nazi officers did)...Like Argentina..The investigators (X USA & UK Spec Forces FBI & Al Queda hunters)..find convinc-ing evidence (actual FBI rports & eye witness testimony)..that Hitler did escape & hide in the jungles of the Amazon..wth plans to rebuild the Nazi 4th Reich..& launch a massive counter attack from there..But luckily due to massive changes to the political landscape in those So American countries..they went from iron grip dictatorships to democratic countries.. It nevr reachd its own potential..A very very interesting series from 2016-17..

Goerdeler propably did not reveal his fellow comrades to the SS just like that. Sadly the SS had torture specialists who had specialy machined devices for even disgustings things like crushing testicles. Or pulling toothes out. It is easy for us to say :,, but he knew he was doomed why not take it - unimagineable pain and the prospect of a shorter death can break everybody. All those who got arested because of information were killd by the Nazis and not Goerdeler . May he rest in peace :(

By 1944, the allies had started bombing German cities for a few years already. My hometown was hit in 1942 (which was strategically not useful since Hitler hated the city as they had voted majorically against him in 1933) and during the bombing a major church was hit and the bells fell to the church floor. They rest there to this day as a memorial at the spot where they fell.
