I was researching an idea I had in mind for a while, find a way to add a gas gauge to my 98 GL1500c, and came across a maker who'd already built one from scratch. I contacted Joop Angelier, an engineer from the Netherlands, and after a few conversations he agreed to build one for me. He has several fascinating projects on his website, and even includes schematics and detailed info on how he designed them.
If you're the DIY type, check him out:

Anyone needing a similar kit, try LSK Motorcycle Electronics. They make a similar kit that works on same principal as this in both analog, digital, panel mount or bar mount. They also have tach kits. My condolences to Joops family.

I'm not sure, but I believe that a company called LSK made a deal with his estate. They're putting out a version that looks like it's based off his design. Plus several other companies are making something similar now. Lots of options out there since I made this video.

Hi all. Lots of you are noticing that Joop's site is down now. I'm glad that people are learning about this brilliant engineer through me, but I don't represent his business, or speak for him. As I said, he used to publish the schematics on his site, and I was planning to build some myself. But when I contacted him he was cool enough to hand-build some of them for me and ship them halfway around the world. For a price, of course. Maybe one day he'll return to this hobby, or make the schematics available. But I have no info on that.

Yeah, he was a great guy. We talked about bikes quite a bit via email. Pretty cool to get to know someone from the other side of the world. this is great. Think it would work on a bike with a secondary tank like the virago? problem is theres a pump too, would it go between the secondary tank to the pump? pretty frustrated with this!
@lyunardo
@lyunardo 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Nick Gargiulo, This type probably couldn't work with a pump. It needs the full weight of the liquid in the tank to compress what comes out of the bottom and reaches the pressure sensor. A fuel pump would probably relieve the pressure and throw the reading off. Anyway, this model is no longer available. There are other options though. Good luck.
@nick17gar
@nick17gar 6 жыл бұрын
yea im thinking the opposite, that it would read the pressure of the pump and make it look like a full tank always. either way it doesnt seem like the right solution for my bike. looks great on yours!
@lyunardo
@lyunardo 6 жыл бұрын
Now I'm curious. We know that the pump would create a strong vacuum in the line and would intermittently suck more liquid through than vacuum or gravity feed would. But would that increase or decrease the pressure reading on the sensor? If I had the time, I might try this out on my workbench.

Was this kit a vakyrie specific one? Or could i have installed it on a 1996 Honda magna?
@lyunardo
@lyunardo 7 жыл бұрын
Two things: the Valkyrie has a 5 gallon tank, and is gravity fed. If I remember correctly, the old school Magna had a fuel pump, and a 3.5 gallon tank. If so, the stepper motor in the gauge would need to be calibrated for a different output from the pressure sensor. Also, the bike would need to have the gravity feed conversion some guys used to do to bypass their fuel pump. For you, I think there's a simpler solution. You can replace your gas tank from a year that came with the stock gauge. Then you could just buy any third party gauge to plug into that. No need for a custom, hand built solution. For the Valks, used tanks with a fuel sensor still sell for around $800 or more, so it was actually cheaper to go this route. Plus, it's kind of fun to have something completely custom! Good luck!

As others have mentioned, Joop Angelier who built and designed this device, isn't making these devices right now. When you visit his website, it has a message that he's temporarily unavailable due to illness. www.joopangelier.nl/ Hopefully, he'll be better. He's really a great guy. But to answer your question, this works off of pressure readings, so any gravity fed fuel system that has the same size tank would get the same reading as my bike. There are other vids on KZbin showing gauges that use other methods. Good luck man!

@lyunardo 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Bluezz, Yeah I was lucky to get get some of Joop's gadgets before he retired. Here's some options for you to look into. Anything you do will probably need some fabrication and DIY skills. Good luck. 1. The simplest method is to find a generic "float level fuel gauge" with a hollow ball that rises with your gas level. You would probably need to modify your gas cap to somehow fit this into your tank. Here's an example, but I'm not recommending that specific one. www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/part/simplicity/2156175sm?gclid=cj0kcqjwl7nybrcwarisal7o7dfbxicgku0-ihnhrhptgt2-ghhloy_87eztbm62dwqfilskwyiftssaatt5ealw_wcb 2. There are other pressure based fuel gauges like this one: www.lskelectronics.com/fuelgaugepro1 I don't know anything about them at all. I looked at several a few years ago, but wanted something that looked like the existing instruments on my old school bike.
