Very well-put. As an Elvis fan, I've always known of the influence Roy had on Elvis. Elvis Idolized him and recorded several of Roy's songs. I discovered this song in 2008 after the passing of a young lady I loved very much and this song resonated with me. Your husband, Roy Jr., was kind enough to respond to a message I left for him on his MySpace page that year when I explained my situation. I'll always be grateful for Roy Jr.'s encouragement. Always keep Roy Sr.'s legacy alive.

Elivis was a Big Roy Hamilton FAN! He gave this song to Roy Hamilton because Roy Hamilton gave him Voice Lessons in those American Sound Studio Sessions! That is why he was sounding so Great Vocally and more like Roy Hamilton in those those '69 sessions. Roy Hamilton passed away shortly after those sessions. He died July 20TH,1969. We should give Roy Hamilton the credit he deserves for his great rendition of this song. He Influenced the "King"! Let's Give Credit where Credit is DUE!!!

Hamilton didn't give him voice lessons in those sessions that's laughable. He happened to be there because Chips Moman was producing Roy's sessions at the same time as Elvis' One recorded their songs followed by the other.

This wonderful and touching song was recorded by many singers long before Elvis gave it away in 1969 to Roy Hamilton. There are other versions of "Angelica" that needs to be heard. Recordings made by the song-writer himself, Barry Mann, and versions with Scott Walker, Gene Pitney, The Sandpipers and Oliver. They can all be found here on KZbin. Please listen to these other versions, and try to imagine what Elvis could've done with this song. Probably he wouldn't have done a better job with it than Roy. We'll never know. But hearing Roys' fantastic version, at least makes me think that his "Angelica" is the definite version, His heart wrenching version of this song bring tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

This has to be Roy Hamilton’s swan song until he passed away later that year in 1969. Roy had a great run of hits back in the 1950’s with “Unchained Melody”, “Don’t Let Go” and “You Can’t Have Her”.
@scouseronthewirral7 ай бұрын
Did you know Elvis’s singing idol was Roy Hamilton the big voiced R&B/Pop balladeer whose songs include I’m gonna sit right down and cry over you, If I loved you, You’ll never walk alone, Hurt and unchained melody that Elvis covered. Well in January 1969 during the Memphis sessions Elvis actually met his hero who was also making songs at the studio and was so pleased and happy he gave Roy a song that he was about to record called ANGELICA it was the last hit of Roy as he sadly died aged 40 that following July. In early July 1969, Hamilton suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage at his home in New Rochelle, New York. He was taken to New Rochelle General Hospital where he lay in a coma for more than a week. On July 20, 1969, he was removed from life support and died. Hamilton was 40 years old. Some connected his earlier illness that caused his retirement to his death, although a connection was never proven. In a 2017 documentary for the BBC, Hamilton’s son Roy Hamilton Jr. revealed that Elvis Presley sent Roy's wife, Myrna, a rose every day Hamilton was in the hospital. When Hamilton passed away from complications of his stroke, Presley sent Myrna flowers for the following six months. At the time of his death, Hamilton was heavily in debt, forcing him, a week before he died, to borrow heavily on his insurance policy to pay off back taxes. This prompted his widow, Myrna, to publicly seek funds for his burial. Elvis Presley is said to have covered Hamilton’s outstanding medical bills and funeral costs. At Hamilton's funeral service, messages of condolence sent by Presley, Mahalia Jackson and B.B. King were read out to the mourners.

I wish Elvis had recorded this song also, but during the period of 1976-77 rather than in 1969. I don't think Elvis could fully relate emotionally to "Angelica" at this point. By 1976-77, however, Elvis was a broken man who had lost nearly everything he had, and his voice had reached operatic dimensions (when he wasn't affected by drugs). At that point in his life, "Angelica" would have cut deeper than "Hurt."

I think the song may have been originally meant for the Righteous Brothers. The RBs had a lot of success with songs by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. But, the big question is whether the RBs had first option on their songs. Of course, the song was written in 1966and the publisher, Screen Gems may have made it a first option for the Monkees. The Monkees having been an in-house project for Screen Gems. But, there's no documentation showing the song was offered to the Monkees.

RCA lodged a protest in the late 90s/early 00s when Garth Oral Roberts Barf Brooks was credited by the RIAA as the best selling male artist on sales of 100 million in the US. RCA claimed Elvis had sold 430 million in the US and has dove very little since then to verify that total. The Beatles are #1 current on US sales, 170 million.
