I just started learning to draw a few months ago and quickly realized that I needed to focus on learning values first. I really like the way you often change your colors/hues to something with the same values.

Jani Lewis yes, as I always say “value is king“. There are still rules to color in general, but you can certainly get creative with color if you have your values correct. Don’t stop practicing drawing skills though, because they are the good foundation of a painting.

Wow! This video was packed with good info! I don't do many landscapes, so I needed this refresher course in atmospheric perspective, & reminder of how important values are. Also found your tip of working from dark to light helpful. Many good tidbits in between, as well. Thank you for sharing, & for subscribing to my channel, too.

Thanks Susan, Great Work! It's my first time to your videos and you are giving very valuable information to your viewers as well as bringing that Inspiration to many who are watching. You know it's very easy to tell when you're doing something with God's Guidance and Grace because you're never afraid to Express it and it shows in what you're doing. Thanks again.😃

I agree with Lulu Bird, so glad I found you. I'm also working through you videos. It's been years ago I did art before kids and now they are grown I'm wanting to get back in to it. It's funny how close we live to each other I'm in Lakeland.

Loretta Ray .... that is fantastic you are so close to me! My sons go to Southeastern University in Lakeland! Your story sounds so much like my own. I think this channel resonates with others who are finally getting to explore their artistic dreams. I have a group I just started on FB for Monet Café where everyone from this channel can share their art and ask questions. It's really small right now but feel free to ask to join if you would like to. 💜💜. Blessings with your art endeavors!!!

Oh that painting came out looking so beautiful! With many more years of practice I do hope I will be able to play with colors like that. I think I might be a little color blind because for the life of me I can never get the correct values, my nemesis for sure. I don’t know what I can do about it but I keep watching your videos and hopefully one day it will just click! Thank you so much for your generosity. Your are such a great teacher :)

You are a born teacher, and your artist voice sounds very familiar. Do you know a husband and wife artist duo who also taught on line? I believe they're last name is Jenkins also. I loved watching them but they have disappeared from public television.

Are these oil pastels? Chalk pastels? Which one are you using with the watercolors. Do you use the tube water colors or do you prefer to use those I see in your video that comes in the container? I have different ones, but never bought those you have in your video. Thank you for your video I really like them very much.

Beautiful painting... thank you for sharing your talent and experience with us! I am relatively new to pastels so I appreciate all of the instruction! I was wondering, I notice that Karen Margulis uses foam pipe insulation for blending. Do you blend your pastels with anything? Thank you again, and please continue to bless us with more pastel painting videos!
@monetcafe

Thank you so much Kathleen. I remember when I was new to pastels and got so much helpful instruction from other kind artists. Karen Margulis is one of my favorites... and I have learned lots from her including the pipe foam technique. I just uploaded a new video where I paint in real time and talk a bit about blending with pipe foam insulation. Thanks for your question and don't hesitate to ask if you have more :) Here is the link to the tutorial I mentioned... . kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKjcmoSYj7GHj7M

Really learning a lot about using color from your video. Also enjoying your looseness as well. I will check out your other stuff. I hope it's not rude to say, because you are very good, but... I really liked the sky and other tonalities at around minute 21. It had a nice mood there.

Dennis..... thank you so much for your comment. And regarding your comment about the sky, I often later look back at my videos and wished I had stopped at a certain point. Ha ha. Learning to slow down and analyze is obviously important. Happy painting and I hope to upload more videos soon.

hi Susan, thank you so much. your videos have been always so useful for me.I have a question to ask. I wanna know how you choose your underpainting's color?! has it any rule?
@LS-yp5yj

Why do you choose the 400 grit and not a finer grit? I find the 400 eats up my pastels quickly. Thank you.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 6 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I find the coarser grit papers allow for more layering, and I like to keep my colors brilliant. I do use finer grit papers though and you are right about the pastels not being eaten up by those papers, but layering is more limited.

@monetcafe

I don't blend my pastels very much, but some things (like the sky) look better without much texture. In those cases, I blend using a piece of pipe foam insulation (that you can buy in any hardware store). I just use a small piece, and rub the area I want to blend. It works great. But mostly I like the unblended look in the majority of the painting. :)

Hi Susan.. so glad I discovered your channel.. love the way you teach.. when you're done with your paintings, do u put a final fixative on it? I bought a fixative from Sennelier, but don't know if I should or not.. also, I'm having a hard time with those mid value colors and determining if they're in the right value. Help pls.. :-)
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Belinda. Thank you so much for your comment. It really blesses me to know I'm helping others. I don't apply fixative after I am finished because it darkens the colors. For protection, I usually place the finished paintings in between sheets of "glassine" (which is a product a bit like wax paper for keeping pastel paintings from smudging).You can then put them in a portfolio or sometimes I will use a large sketch pad to put my paintings in between the sheets (using the glassine on top of each painting). Also, there are protective plastic bags you can buy in various sizes to store your paintings. These are nice because you can easily allow customers to see the paintings without smudging them and you can ship them in the bags. Here is link for the bags: www.clearbags.com/bags/clear-bags/flap-seal Also, mid values are often the challenge but getting them right makes for a wonderful piece. Do you have a value finder? They are fairly inexpensive and very helpful. Here is a link. www.dickblick.com/products/gray-scale-and-value-finder/ Perhaps I can make a video on mid values soon. Again, thanks for your sweet comment and happy painting! :)
