Dear Scott, thanks so much for the time you took to explain the whole thing. I am actually a newbie and got a ZR550 with a strange problem. Whenever I change gears the revs stay high. I tried to adjust the choke and the little black dial in the carburetor but, if I go too low the problem disappears but the engine stops at idle, and if I adjust it at a normal idle rpm (about 1000), then when I go to second, third, fourth gear etc the rpm keeps high. It´s like the clutch doesn´t connect properly or something. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it a lot, but in any case I thank you for your great support and service.

My first ideas are your clutch is slipping or…your carbs need a rebuild, if they are running lean, the revs will hang up on trailing throttle. So, if you dont know the history of the clutch plates and springs I would replace both sets of plates and the springs. Then I would service the carbs with a complete disassembly, cleaning and rebuild. Then you will need to adjust the valves as per my video, then you will need to finally sync the carbs after the valves are set. Hope this helps.

@@mbsevans Dearest Scott. I can hardly believe that you decided to explain with such detail to someone you don´t know, just out of your good heart. I really have no words to express my gratitude, but what I am going to do is to start by cleaning and rebuilding the carburetors first, because they have been without use for a while, and then go about the clutch. Shall everything work I will definitely dedicate my drive to your good health, good sir. Thanks so very much for your kindness and your support. It will not be forgotten.

@@mbsevans Quick update. I just replaced the clutch plates and springs...still problems, so my next step is to clean the carbs, which I will do this weekend. Wish me good luck :)

bummer.. i actually stopped using my torque wrench as i noticed it seems to puts too much, especially on aluminium. And regarding skipped chain, i think haynes is also missing to mention to remove the tensioner before reinstalling the top cover.

Mr Thomas Well proper torque settings are critical, chances are your torque wrench needs recalibrating or there’s something wrong with it.
