I have a hunch, based on Valve's very early VR headset prototypes, that the QR codes are meant to be used for tracking. But not tracking the device, which was their original purpose... Instead they would be used for tracking objects in your playspace. What sort of objects? Well, you could slap one on a soda bottle, and then the device could then recognize that as a virtual object you want to be tracked, without any additional hardware.

Ya valve used this to track their early 2013 prototypes
@dangoran2 жыл бұрын
I think valve are more pragmatic and we won't for example get varifocal lences for that reason. It's too early and experimental and valve will go for quality but also simplicity. I at least hope they are (we will be) spending money on awsome lenses and screens , wireless, inside out tracking and just other innovative clever things to make it all work better. That alone is maybe 1000-1500 dollars. I also think the "comfort headstrap" could be just a wired headset. It would be a smart move to target a wider audience (lower bugets) when they already have the basic upgraded parts and also experience with their current product. I agree that they're focusing on pc and not standalone. I have trouble seeing that they would go through the process to bring content to a new ecosystem. That was a problem I had with the standalone speculation. And I don't think they would prioritize a steam deck like product until there's more content and more vr users. That would be weird because the total package would be too expensive for the experiences you can get now.

Paying attention to OLED aging is definitely important if this thing is going to demand Index-level prices. While they definitely weren’t the poster child for OLED when they were new (blacks? Who needs blacks?) the screens of my Rift CV1 have definitely degraded over the years, and are the main reason I’m jumping to a Quest 2 as a cheap-ish stopgap. The lower half of both eyes has a significant red tint in dark scenes that’s gotten far worse over the last year or so (probably as the headset has seen way more use during the pandemic). This is probably to be expected as early OLEDs’ traditional weakness was the lifetime of the blue pixels. The weird part is that it’s not bounded horizontally - the region of crimson annoyance(TM) is more circular, wit the highest point a little below the center of each eye, and rolling off from there to the left and right. It’s seriously distracting in very dark areas, so 50% of HL:Alyx and literally all of Elite. I can’t really complain - between myself and the kids, it’s easily seen hundreds of hours of use since the first lockdown in 2020,. Picking the Rift after the price drop all those years ago instead of a Vive easily pays for a quest to act as a replacement while something more interesting comes along,. I would have been far more irked if this had been a $1k device, but It did a great job preserving our sanity during lockdown, and there’s no real shame in simply wearing out from constant use.
