I feel a little better now that this isn't something so astounding that I'll never be able to afford. I'm obviously too ignorant about VR to really know about what I don't know. I've only ever worn Meta's headsets but with Quest 3 all I'm yearning for are deep blacks and better cameras. But with Quest 2 all I thought I wanted was more GPU and better contrast. When I first saw the optics in Quest 3 I realised this is what I didn't even know I wanted. So I highly value people like Brad that are willing to experiment at the cutting edge of VR and report back what's cooking in the near future for us down here trying to just get the best VR bang for the buck.

For me I pretty much just want better fov, wearing the quest 2 felt claustrophobic at times, and while the q3 is an improvement I'm just hoping for the eventual 180* micro displays that we've seen in prototypes. That and maybe more native wireless connection, like if they could have a peripheral that plugged directly into the computer for something more responsive or higher bitrate than wifi or bluetooth

I've been in VR since Rift CV1 and I've loved Quest 2 and 3 but seriously miss the OLED from the original Rift for the deep blacks and I also miss the tracking too as I've not been able to play Archery games since Rift CV1. So I'm hoping Quest 4 will be OLED + better tracking. And things extra I'd love are: Wider FOV + eye tracking. Once you see what eye tracking can do like in PSVR you'll want eye tracking in all your games. It's amazing!!

I can understand that@@deluge6479 . But tinkerer or not, if you are informing people of a VR headset, it's important to include a significant aspect of the headset. Part of being one of the largest faces in VR content, it's a responsibility to at least inform others that there is an easy option to negate that issue. People look up to this guy and what he says as 100% facts and there is no other option or way around it. This guy is all about some deep cuts & info that 99% of the population couldn't care less about, but he still goes the extra mile. Would seem that just mentioning that there is a solution, which is easy, quick & makes a HUGE difference, would be worth taking the 5 seconds to add into the video.

Really nice that you could test the headset, i'm using a varjo xr3 at work and would like to know some things about the xr4 (if focal edition upgrades are worth it mostly): - is the autofocus feature really usefull or is this just a gimmick ? do you see this tech being used in every headset in the future ? (supposing that latency is low enough) - is the passthrough resolution noticeably higher than on the xr3 ? (and thus base xr4 because it will be the same) - did the lack of inner screen bother you ? advertised ppd is lower in the center (70 on xr3 vs 51 on xr4), is this noticeable ?
@SadlyItsBradley
@SadlyItsBradley 7 ай бұрын
It’s a neat feature. But definitely not something I think adds THAT much cost. I’ve seen it in other HMD prototypes as well. Such as Sharp from CES this year. Over time I think it will be more common It’s hard for me to compare apples to apples with the XR3 unless I’m in the same environment. I’m sorry I can’t be of much help. I think the passthrough is improved by the fact that device’s FOV is larger though Personally I think it’s hard to notice a huge difference. Obviously 70ppd is bigger, but the benefits here outweigh the losses

Hey Bradley! I got to try that exact headset you had on as well, and I agree that it was pretty basic, but fantastic for clarity and comfort. One thing you may have missed is the other exhibits using the XR-4. One exhibit to the left down the walkway behind you had a CGI company with a blue screen and a rifle simulating an optic in place of a tundra tracker and a virtual shooting range. It was quite seamless, and I had a full conversation with one of the guys using the pass-through, pointing at a wall like my mind tricked me into treating it like a window.

@@damiengvideos4337Ya, I watched the whole thing too... I know what they said... Let's wait and see what they do. I think you are going to see in a year or so Varjo comes back and says, wow due to customer demand we are going to build an Aero 2. I mean, if they were leaving the consumer space, why did they remove the Subscription? That certainly isn't a deal-breaker for industry. Plus all the development for the Aero 2 is basically done. You take out the MR/XR stuff from the XR-4 and slap a $2000 price tag on it and you have the Aero 2. Think about it, you certainly wouldn't tell all these prosumer enthusiasts that... O' just wait a little longer, we are building an Aero 2 so no need to buy the XR-4. No, you say we have no plans so that some of this high end consumer market goes... well hell, they are not building an Aero 2 so I guess I better buy the XR-4. Weight in particular will be difficult/impossible to get to that of the beyond while maintaining the same quality. However, as others have mentioned in the comments, I think the weight can be shifted off the head for some components that don’t need close proximity for low signal latency.

Thie issue doesn't happen if you keep your head still and something moves across the screen, its only when you move your head. The weight is the #1 reason I went back to my Index from my Aero for personal use. For development purposes (eye tracking related), the hardware is prohibitively too expensive for our target demographic and efforts have been moved to EyeTrackVR due to it's affordability and open source nature.
@paulct91

Is that still the case after Varjo Aero's $1000 price drop to around $1000? Or EVEN after that those problems exist?
@KohiVR
@KohiVR 7 ай бұрын
@@paulct91 it depends on your needs, I tend to suggest Bigscreen for most people that are shopping in that price point. Comfort is the main reason. For sim racing/flying, it's hard to beat the Aero at that price. If you do any kind of moving around though, e.g. Beat Saber or dancing in VRChat, the Bigscreen Beyond is the better choice due to its lower weight and better CG. Also consider contrast levels of LCD vs uOLED, Aero backlight can wash out dark scenes which is again not as much of an issue for sims but can take away from some experiences in other games.
@KohiVR
@KohiVR 7 ай бұрын
To add onto that, the key difference that may set these apart for some people is the eye tracking. I have had mixed experiences with it... gaze direction is extremely accurate, unparalleled by anyone else in the industry, however for social VR applications it lacks some of the parameters that help with expression. The final results of our presentation with the Varjo team directly were somewhat disappointing, even on their prosumer product they do not seem to see the value of expression for social VR and research purposes.

I really love the VR world, new tech and all that, but I really can't give a single duck about anything high-end anymore. There's a lot of these super expensive vr shit that's supposed to be revolutionary and be the next generation or whatever, but the truth is until it hits the market and is accessible to an average consumer, it doesn't matter at all if that tech is impressive.

Interesting headset. Huge shame Varjo can't better remedy that geometric barrel distortion at the periphery of your view though. It seems to be consistent across their headsets and It's the single reason I switched back to my Valve Index as a daily driver after five minutes of testing my Varjo Aero.
@flix6904
@flix6904 7 ай бұрын
I'm daily driving an Aero, and while the barrel distortion was very visible for the first few days, your brain blends it out, just like the black borders around your vision VR gives you. At least that's how it worked for me, I don't notice the distortion anymore.

@@flix6904Exactly. I am a prescription glasses wearer with astigmatism, and everytime my prescription changed my brain had to "learn" the new image. Distortions, everything felt shorter... a couple of days and I cannot notice anymore. The same thing happened wirh Varjo (also moved from Index).

I agree I couldn't get used to the distortion. It's the reason I send my Varjo back and returned to my G2. Maybe we got specific headshapes or eye to eye width 😂. Because some people didn't want to believe me how bad the distortion for me was. It almost felt like 2.5d instead of 3d.

Brad, do you have any info on raytracing in VR? I think all the new optics tech is stretching what forward rendering can do, especially when you can't bake all the lighting offline. Also, if we're talking eye tracking then variable rate shading is a huge hack compared to what raytracing could do, ie: smoothly lower the ray density towards the periphery. My biggest fear is about "shader composability" which works really well in a forward setup (each screen pixel is 'owned' by the last shader drawn over it) and is nonexistent in deferred rendering (you're juggling a dozen framebuffers with an ubershader somewhere in there). Eg: Poiyomi shaders have an option for clamping the minimum light a surface can receive, thus it won't be totally black even if it's not receiving any light. But with physically based raytracing the light (created out of nowhere) would be carried onto the surrounding surfaces, making you into a dim light stick.
@paulct91
@paulct91 7 ай бұрын
Not Brad... but, I believe VR Raytracing or maybe even Path Tracing is mostly possible in VR, for example DanceXR a MMD/XnaLara Model and Animation player claims it can do that, though not on the Android app because of Performance(?).

@@g_glop Oh, boy..... At any rate, I share your antipathy for deferred rendering. The only thing that is needed (on PC) for highly realistic visuals at perfect angular resolution and perfect framerates is Forward Rendering combined with Foveated Rendering. If the Foveated Rendering is not just GPU-level but integrated with all aspects of an engine, the framerate at a given Apparent/Foveal Resolution could be increased 10x or more.
@g_glop
@g_glop 7 ай бұрын
@@bricaaron3978 I agree that forward + foveated is a good combo for most apps but i just can't stop thinking that with rays you could also get distortion compensation and render masks completely for free. Is depth of field easier with rays than raster? Eye tracing would give you the gaze convergence point and you could blur out everything else to make the focused object pop.

this is off topic but. on displays today with 500hz, people are claiming "it's like looking through a window" and that's something to think about. do we really need 8k resolution or will games look insane with, say, quest 3 resolution but higher refresh rate? for games with simple graphics, think half life one, we should be there in terms of processing power now shouldn't we? on a quest 3 sized headset
@willuigi64
@willuigi64 7 ай бұрын
Those displays suffer from persistence blur though. VR has had high refreshrates with little persistence blur for a while, which make them a lot more clear than standard displays. Higher resolutions in VR is important. So is lightweight, the beyondVR headset is well regarded for it's minimal size.
@float32

We shouldn’t be there in terms of headset power. We’re not even close. We’re at least an order of magnitude from that being possible. You can’t even do that with the top end GPUs, where the system pulls over a kilowatt!! (Assuming you want graphics better than ps3)

Resfresh rate won't fix spatial aliasing effects. So high resolution is definitely necessary. But high refresh rate is also necessary, as is high contrast and good colors, low input latency, no noticeable artifacts(e.g. ghosting) as well as a small size and low weight. So we still have a lot of dimensions of improvement, before we get something that is "good enough"
