Are you aware of the fact that this ARG predates the "spooky black man" "ARG" you mentioned in the description and has very little in common with it? And the fact that both the Wikipedia and TV tropes page on Alternate Reality Games explicitly state codes and ciphers as being one of the defining features? Apparently not, since you're still calling those spoopy Gmod series ARGs despite them not fitting the definition of that term.

if I remember correctly VALVE also tried to make an ARG for Half Life 2, the clue is at the first chapter you can see a billboard with the name of xccr. Input the name into web browser will put you to a website with password to solve. However some people pointed out that the ARG was not worked by VALVE but Marc Laidlaw himself and it got shut down because people was less interested or did not realized it was part of ARG

FROM REDDIT u/desimaldevil (two years ago) My friend, isnt there was already a big thread on this sub where we found solution and it was just fan-made ARG for that TV series movie where plane crashed on island. Was is lost or something like that. This is just a pc console from that movie and it was solved before like 10 years ago on some lost fanforums, as I remember, might be wrong apparently theres a lot of coincidences in half life assets and shit using plane references LMFAO???? this other asset has the coordinates of the plane from lost according to another comment make your own conclusions

Gabe’s answer about favorite game reminded me of my dad. Lol I think another big reason is, his work on HL1 and 2 was such an effort to make games like that successful, and quality. It was an attempt if anything. But portal 2 is literally youngest child. It represents everything those games did and considerably more. And I say this as a diehard HL fan
