Vampire Crab Island - Aquascaping Paludarium with a Waterfall

I haven’t planned to keep a crab just saw him in a shop and felt bad for him. He was kept in a really bad place so I took him with me. Since he is an escape artist make sure to keep him inside the tank. It’s better to keep him within high “walls” or at least have a lid on it. It looks like I managed to make it work, since he never escaped (yet). But anyway why would he do that when he has a great place to live.
He needs water but he spends most of his time on the ground. It important to create places where he can hide what makes him feel safe. To get know his demand check out a specific page where it’s described properly. But here is a tip for you, Mr. Crab likes the dog food.

I kept various crabs over the years, and he can escape out of there for sure, every silikon strand is apossible route. Also geosesarma spec. need a land part they can burrow in a bit. they are not semiaquatic but terrestrial with the need for a constant water source.

Add some springtails to the moss, the crab will also eat those and those that remain will eat any fungus that forms on the wood above the water.

Its a stunning paludarium. But 1 thing, vampire crabs are social creatures so they live in groups. If you keep one crab it will get eventualy get bored. So i suggest you buy 2 or 3 more if you can. Its not really a big problem but it is better for the crab to have some mates

You should have made a semi-closed paludarium for the vampire crab. Their habitat is in Indonesia which the humidity is around 80%. And they live in upstream of river, which the KH is almost 0 and the pH is 7.0 according to a research of water parameter around their habitat. So we should also care of tank water parameter. So be careful.

Very Nice tank!!:D Generally speaking ,if the crab is gonna be drinking from this water ,choosing RO is not the best option for him.All animals need minerals in the water and ..osmosing them??(is that how you call it) remove the minerals

Crabs need soil or sand to burrow! Gravel isn’t a good substrate for them. They also need more land are they can actually burrow in.

Did you mention cycling the tank? These crabs can be sensitive to the nitrite / ammonia spike of a new tank.

I wish I could have more plants in my crab setup, but mine are a brackish species. The salt kills most plants. I had a mangrove sprout but they ate the leaves and it died 😑 I guess I could try silk plants but I don’t really like them. In the mean time I’m just trying to get some interesting algae to grow 😂
