@Necrowolf81 The stylization at the time. 3d games were novel and weren’t able to set a standard yet, thus calling it a “clone” back then wasn’t really possible as that sort of metric didn’t exist. I think that was part of the point of the oc. Of course I could be wrong. Derivative or not, the anime cg adapted from an anime style fmvs, music, and artwork of the game were very unique for the time. I mean, look at games like mega man legends. They were good, but imagine if that trend of using the bumpers to navigate the camera caught on? People were trying to perfect the medium which brought about more creativity. But, If anything I’d say they tried to put the stylings of Castlevania (I mean shit even the font is the sotn font) into an RE clone, but that’s just my opinion.

I miss all this weird experimentation when 3D first existed and with the technology. These days there's an established "formula" for each genre (fully rotating backgrounds, camera situated behind the right shoulder in third person games etc). Back then there was no formula so developers would just throw everything at the wall and played with what stuck so even if less games had a consistent "good" quality, it was still cool to see such diversity in games Back then they would take new technology and see all the cool things they could do by creating new genres and experimenting.. nowadays they take the new technology, make the same types of games only shinier and more detailed with pretty lights and reflections and shadows

very enjoyable just leaving this on in the Background, just vibing while i work on other things ^_^ seems like to fully appreciate the Plot, you need to have seen the Movie Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, not a bad thing , the film is a Masterpiece and extremely watchable anytime! just include as many bits from the film in somehow, rearrange them, shuffle them around, almost like how one would rif on a popular song. the plot feels like the 3rd act of the film where they are in the castle, and the marcus brothers stuff is shuffled into the inbetween bits of the castle. Alot of them are dead before you meet them, i think its a case of trying to stick a little too close to the plot of film when it wasn't really that necessary, i would have been fine with a Kyle Boss fight and Grove and the Big Hammer Guy, I would have been fine if the Barberoy fights had more creativity, more fun first, more novelties. Ah well, I can imagine they were under the crunch to get this game ready to release the same time as the Japanese theatrical release of Bloodlust, so there is a smell of Rushed all over it. But yeah I guess the games is a licensed tie in to boost the profile of the then New movie coming out at the time, who knew? I thought the opening cutscene with the 2d animation was specially made for this game, not really its just crimped from the film. ALSO, the American voices of D and Maya, Left Hand and maybe Layla all sound very close to the movie dub, does anyone know if this is the case? its possible they recorded the audio for the game and the movie back to back? :O even if not D's voice is fantastic here as well as Left Hand! :D I love the music! ^_^ I played the game afew years before the film was available in the UK like 2 years later. I am alot more greatful for hidden gems like this since they are the best we are gonna get to undiscovered Classic tank control resident evil games ^_^

Probably the best non Castlevania Vampire game ever made. Played this game before I saw the movie.

The Vampire Hunter D books are amazing horror novels. Everyone should check out the first few. They’re a real treat. This game/movie specifically is based on the third book

This is gonna be weird but in the movie I never got the impression of D being skilled or strong as the praise for him was as he really didn’t do much compared to the other hunters. Yes he overwhelmed and could’ve killed Meier twice but even then I just couldn’t get it. The game on the other hand despite how clunky it is did give me that impression about D.

Deleted my previous comment, I didn’t realize this game and Bloodlust released in N.A. in 2000. Same year as PS2. It’s visually fidelity is remarkable for a PS1 title

Interesting they made vampire hunter D into a playstation 1 game, it was one of the domestic Gothic anime horror that I have watched back in the days.

That intro, those bounty hunters look like the ones from the Bloodlust movie. So does this game take place between the first and second movies?
