The whole camera sucking the life out of actors is an interestig play on the superstition of cameras literally stealing souls. Is a shame the movie didn't include the Bram Stoker suit thing, the crazy director reaction would have been priceless.

That could've have been great as prologue. Murnau gets the news he is refused the film rights, after offering the better deal for Stokers widow simply because he wanted to make the movie so bad. Widow Stoker could also belittle Murnau for Germany's loss during the first world war. He thus changes some names and details but as he looks for a way to one up Stoker's book in his mania discovers Orlock and regains enough sanity to make his bargain with the real vampire.

There was a super weird subplot that was written (but not filmed tho I could be wrong) and cut where a woman murnau is shtooping is the woman who turned and abandoned orlock hundreds of years previously. It was supposed to end w/ her turning murnau or something. Glad they cut it tbh.

Great reviews, Maven. I'm happy to see you getting the most out of your immortal existence. I'm hoping that in discussing the merits of beauty vs the beast in our favorite bloodsuckers, you might talk about the 1972 TV movie: The Night Stalker, where a Las Vegas reporter tracks a blood-drinking killer through the night streets and back alleys of Sin City. This film and its 1973 sequel: The Night Strangler, would then spawn the cult favorite series Kolchak: The Night Stalker 1974- 1975.

You're right that FW Murnau wasn't the megalomaniac intoning gnomic aphorisms John Malkovich portrayed in "Shadow;" that was Werner Herzog. That last absurd monologue about failed picnics really drives it home, but recall that Herzog also used untrained locals for authenticity, and that people were maimed and killed during the filming of "Fitzcarraldo" in the service of his art. Even the codependent hostility between Murnau and Max Schreck mirrors that of Herzog and Klaus Kinski. I suspect that the decision to set "Shadow" in its Weimar Republic roots was as much aesthetics-driven and speculative fiction as it was a "cover your ass" move. I appreciate the nuances in Maven's typically astute close-readings, but let's not forget who the real villain - and vampire - is: Werner Herzog, director of "Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)."

I heard that "Shadow of the Vampire" was actually not too far from what happened with the 1979 remake of Nosferatu. Unlike Murnau, Werner Herzog was an actual megalomaniac who routinely put his crew in danger. Klaus Kinski was also known to assault his fellow actors. The film production also had many instances of animal cruelty. Not quite a vampire story but close enough.

1. I'm going to have to watch this now, after I watch Nosferatu. Which I really need to see. 2. I wonder if you watched the fifth season of American Horror Story (Hotel). It's its own thing since the show is an anthology and not only does it feature actual vampires, it features a very vampiric character (though he's a ghost). Like Dracula he uses charm and charisma to cloak the mind of a ruthless killer, and there's a scene in the eighth episode (I believe) that is very remniscient of Dracula interrupting the brides seducing Jonathan. I imagine you'd like it.

What to know a little known fun fact? A love story was cut from the film. Orlok quotes Tithonius at the start of the film, which is about a man who gained immortality to be with his immortal goddess love but still aged. Shrek later says a woman was what transformed him. That lady would have been FW Murnaeu's love interest, and like the goddess, she stayed youthful. She would eventually die in the film. All this was part of the original script and would have given more depth to Orlok. Though I think FW was gay in real life, so it would have been a bit disrespectful to have him be with a woman, if that was true

In a way, I think I'm more bothered by what they did with the F.W. Murnau character than making Max Schreck an actual vampire. Because obviously no one will think Schreck was a literal vampire, but this really could end up giving Murnau a posthumous reputation as a controlling, sadistic egomaniac. Which seems unfair to someone who by all accounts was nothing of the kind

Jared Leto? He did a number of creepy ass things on one movie. He's not a method actor because of that. If you want to set a bar for how intense someone was as a method actor, a comparison to someone like Daniel Day-Lewis is a must. If he ever played a vampire, you'd have to wonder if he ever actually stumbled across any real ones. Regarding your comment about the predatory nature of film making towards women, it occurred to me that it would have been interesting to see that analogy played towards children in the industry too. As much as women have been used and abused in the industry since its creation, children have suffered as much or even more and we also continue to see that done today. What's particularly horrifying is they're not just preyed on by film makers, other actors, and others in the industry, but many are also preyed on by their own parents.
