Last month there was a new reveal video for Bloodlines 2 - this one focused on character and roleplaying. I watch the whole thing and give some of my thoughts.

I might be wrong, but I just do not have much of a fate after what I have seen so far. I wish to be wrong, because I loved first VtM games, especially Bloodlines.

In my role playing games I want to play a role. Not having first-person conversations and limited dialogue choices is the opposite of that!

VtM Bloodlines 2 stands out as a departure from the essence of its predecessor in several critical ways, leaving me with a sense that it fails to truly embody the spirit of a sequel. The introduction of the pre-established character Phyre. Feels like a departure from the original's appeal of crafting our own character and immersing ourselves in the World of Darkness, disrupting the immersive freedom that defined the first game. A particularly striking concern surfaces in the apparent lack of depth and impact in dialogue choices, a hallmark of the original Bloodlines. Phyre's interactions, especially with characters like Lou, seem to funnel into predetermined outcomes, eroding the meaningful impact of our decisions on the narrative. This creates a linear trajectory that, at least for now, hints at a departure from the branching storylines and consequential choices that defined the original, giving the impression of a walking simulator rather than a robust RPG. The inclusion of the thin blood character within Phyre's psyche. Draws uncomfortable parallels with Cyberpunk 2077. The Chinese Room seemingly borrowed from its concepts. The notion of having an elder within the protagonist's head. It is better suited for a Malkavian or thin-blood character. One who diablerized an elder and inherited their thoughts, merging the elder's experiences with our character's consciousness. Even then, while more believable, it raises questions about the game's fidelity to the essence of a true Bloodlines sequel. In conclusion, while VtM Bloodlines 2 may offer an enjoyable gaming experience, its deviation from the fundamental aspects that defined its predecessor raises concerns about its legitimacy as a true sequel. Presenting it as a standalone title with a distinct identity might align expectations more closely with the potential enjoyment this game could bring.

@shahin3644 That's precisely the impression the game gives-at least for now. This may be attributed to another shortcoming by the Chinese Room: revealing too little of the game. They presented only a few snippets of dialogue and showcased some of the main character's vampire abilities. This comes from a company that claimed to have taken over from Hardsuit Labs in 2021. They've been working for two years on the project and aim to launch it in approximately one year. This is what they got to show us fans. Fans have expressed concerns about the game, especially after learning about the development challenges during Hardsuit's involvement. "Concerns" escalated when the initial writer for the sequel was terminated. Heightening anxiety among fans. To compound this matter, information that Hardsuit had ceased its involvement in the game shortly afterwords. This unveiling demanded grandiosity, a showcase of something remarkable. However, it fell short, revealing little and creating an impression of the game being kept under wraps. Additionally, The Chinese Room's announcements, such as the limit of four clans at release, give the impressions. That they, might be releasing an unfinished game, with plans to provide the rest at a later date.

There's a reason why they call it a "successor" to Bloodlines 1 not a "sequel". And sadly, we most probably won't get the same level of narrative, dialogue and engagement we've had in Bloodlines 1. Which is a shame, given that if you think about it. It's almost a 20 year old game after this "successor" gets released and the gaming industry and game engines have advanced so far yet it feels like we're getting a bit of a downgrade in a lot of parts.

When a company like Larian Studios can give us such a vastly better rpg and succesor than any out on the market today. It makes me wish we could find a dev studio that would put even half the love into making a vtm bloodline 2 game.

@@treyous3395 I actually would love a Larian Studio type of game with VTM. It's a TTRPG too so I can't see why not? Modern city setting, a contained story with maybe a coterie you can build and control. Imagine a VTM top view RPG with Baldur's Gate level of detail and gameplay. I wish WoD would collaborate with Larian Studio to make that happen. Anyway, as to your plight. I do share it. It's basically a "successor" only in name and nothing else.

Being a VTM fan truly is suffering, I just hope the current devs can survive long enough to bring us something worth playing. I’m definitely skeptical about the lack of real roleplaying in this RPG and the telltale style dialogue options aren’t particularly appealing but I’m willing to look past those things as long as there’s a good narrative.

@@theobell2002 my guy I play through VTMB once a year, the roleplaying is not as "limited" as you think, you have the choice between multiple clans, histories and gender. VTMB 2 is actually the one limiting roleplaying by only giving you the choice of gender..

To be fair there are exceptions to that like Baldurs Gate 3 the sequel nobody expected, Dead Island 2 which hilariously kicked the shit out of Dying Light 2 despite being by the original Dead Island devs, Ion Fury which is better than the game it's a prequel to which is a PS3 era game called Bombshell, Crash Bandicoot 4, Half Life Alyx and those are just the ones off the top of my head.

It's been sooo many years since I played Vampires the Masquerade. Over a decade. I honestly forget how it played, and what it looked like. I only remember that I loved it at the time and thinking about the game gives me warm fuzzy feelings. Will this game leave me feeling that same way? I probably won't actually ever play it unless the buzz around it is incredible. If I do play it, it won't be until years after it has been released. I hope it's good though

Hi pam, just found out about a soap opera in the VTM universe, it's called Kindred the embraced. Supper recomended, low budget-vampire-soap opera in the World of darkess setting!

This should be interesting. I've never played a VTM video game but I've gotten really into the table top game over the past 8 months or so. However, my group leans more towards the "What We Do in the Shadows" vibes and not the "Interview with the Vampire" vibes... but with bridge vibes of Blade 1 and Blade 2. I wonder if the tone of this game is going to make it feel like it has nothing to do with the table top for my group and I even though it's probably very lore accurate 😆

I've said this before in other videos regarding the snippet of Phyre talking to Lou, but I just want to say it again. I don't think Lou's voice fits her at all. I love Jane Perry as Diana Burnwood in the Hitman series, she's a phenomenal voice actress and did an excellent job there but I don't think her voice just fits Lou Grand and Seattle. The setting, the theme, the atmosphere. Especially because Lou Grand is suppose to be based on the real-life Seattle Madame Lou Graham, who owned a brothel in the Pioneer Square of Seattle. She was German, so giving her a British accent is just weird to me. I don't know, maybe I'm nitpicking too much but I expected them to nail the VA's just like the original. It's great that Jane Perry has been added in this game but then again, I just think they gave her the wrong character. Meanwhile, Phyre's VA and the animations here definitely needs a LOOOOOOOOT more work. Well, it's a post-alpha footage so I think this won't be final.

My theory that I hinted at below, at 'Phyre' being far more than what she portrays, is confirmed in the claymation part, I mean where the Nosferatu character part of the video... And I wanted to elaborate more on how I suspect that Caine actually allowed 'Phyre' to go to Seattle, and he showed Fabien how to awaken her... I am aware that this is Post Alpha footage, but surely for the video they could've made the framerate as higher than 5...

I like a few of the elements they're presenting so far but I'm worried about some of the roleplaying aspects loved from the original seemingly not making it here and how that will end up changing the vibe so many of us are yearning for again. Playing an elder in modern Seattle is pretty intriguing to me but I immediately got worried when I saw the types of options the demo showed for dialogue choices in combination with the fully voiced protagonist. Bloodlines was so great in part imo because I could really embody my character in dialogue because I could read all of the PC's statement written out (with cool little visual embellishments) and then it really could be read by ME instead of spoken. I worry it'll feel more like I'm just riding along instead of getting that good RP feel. We'll see what comes up next!! Thanks for the great vid, Pam!

@@FernasRPG Nobody is saying it wouldn't work. VTMB is a nieche that many people love (so maybe it isn't a nieche but you get my point) and it has its charms, mainly the roleplaying elements as in you create your own character, people react to you if you are from a different clan, there are even traits you can choose from if you say that the Unofficial Patch Mod is canon which I think meny people consider to be so. The game drastically varies how you handle your character and how you approach missions and dialogues. That absolutely cannot be said for VTMB 2 so far, while it may become a succesfull game when it comes out. It won't be because of the fans but the masses that just like games that you mentione Mass Effect and Cyberpunk. It may only be a successor in name like how the new Star Wars movies are.

​@@FernasRPG Also I don't think you can recreate the magic of the OG game. I remember when I was a kid I reinstalled the game just because I thought my graphics were glitching. Later I just realised it was the Malkavian curse so my character was just diluted and saw the electrical poles moving like it was some horror game. That is something that cannot be replicated again, it would lose its magic. Everyone had some kind of weird interaction with the game like that. I still only play the Ocean House quest alone at night completely in the dark and I still get scared becasue of the atmosphere. All in all, people didn't love the original game becasue of its stellar graphics or combat system (which was shit back then even let's be honest), it was those moments, the voice actors, the atmosphere, the soundtrack that made you think like you were actually there and the dialogues. Unfortunately, these seem to be lacking in the sequel so far.

I hope the next one feels good, thats what I want. If I want a Bloodlines one again, I will just play that. It can change, just be good

@@vigilanterorschach2600 But will be good? If it is a good game, based in World of Darkness, using v5, who the hell cares if they change some stuff? Again, people got angry about stuff being changed because it is usually for the worse. And it doesnt seem this way for Bloodlines 2. I recently played Bloodlines 1 three times in my twitch. Its a fun game, but heavily dated by the limitations. Combat is horrible, there are minor changes between clans (other than powers and a few lines of dialog) and you cant custom your char other than choosing gender and clan. So, yeah, I hope they changed that. Having a reputation system seems good, having a better combat as well. If they have a good story and dialog, it will be a good game. Dont let Nostalgia ruin the next game

I played Bloodlines when it first came out. Not so much anymore but I would love to see a remaster of this game on a more modern graphic engine as well as restored content, oh and the buigs fixed ie makign guns actually useful. I cant wait to play BL2, if it ever comes out.

I love World of Darkness (and wish we'd get more than just Vampire for stuff like this) but I also feel like World of Darkness is cursed when it comes to how the company/companies who own it manage it. If i remember correctly, the mark on Phyre's hand was designed by the community mananger (Outstar). I dont think it has any specific meaning in the lore, but i could be wrong. Also, pretty please make a vid with your feedback on Alan Wake 2!

The mark on the main character elder smells like Tremere or Tzimisce handywork. This game looks waaaay far from even a beta stage.

I'm not very optimistic. They are late, and from the cuts in scenes, the game is far from ready. They look pretty confident though, much more than people i play with. Even if V5 Rule Book is showed very obviously. The vampires look more like Emo college students, far from the uncomfortable feelings i got from first opus (Death Mask Production...). And the animation looks kinda stolid. I'm worried too that the first clan they show is Brujah, then Tremere : very generic appearance. No character building either. No, i'm not confident

Well I'm not a fan of the series and never played the first one but "outside looking in" I think the main character will be too chatty, the dialogue might be unrelatable and the structure of the game will be overly complicated. I hope it turns out great for the sake of the developers and fans though. I can't get my mind off the new SHMUP's 😂

I was super bummed out after this video was released. They're taking the worst parts of FO4 and CP2077, we're not even sure if we can customize our character yet, Malkavian will probably be DLC, and there will still not be any 3rd person camera option. The HSL version was janky but TCR appears to not even have the foggiest idea about what made Bloodlines so great.

I don't love the way the dialogue is not first person like in the OG, it has that generic feel games have of late like Baldur's Gate 3...same look, same feel. I dunno, I am not wowed like I was with Bloodlines.

It’s super weird that a game that’s based on a ttRPG seems to put so little into role playing. Bloodlines emphasized the spirit of VtM even if it was janky. I’d take another janky game that focused on role playing over a Dishonored clone with excellent fighting mechanics (the fighting mechanics don’t seem that impressive). Like this continues to feel like so many things no one who loves VtM and VtM: Bloodlines wanted.

I'm playing Marvel's Midnight Suns, and it has a similar groan-worthy protagonist name ("The Hunter"). In both cases, it seems to be mainly about saving money by limiting the number of dialog lines that have to be recorded multiple times based on gender choices in character creation.

I'll be surprised if 2 is anywhere near as good as 1, sure it'll be prettier but that's the least important aspect of a game. The voiced protagonist also means there's no way we're getting Malks, and since the look is settled the Nos are also out (not that I much care about the Nos, the sneaky stuff just ain't my cup of jam).

I have to say I disagree on combat not being the most interesting part. I think VTMB was very well written, but had incredibly poor combat, and very little options to play as you wanted without having to get your fangs out in the end. Not great, to say the least. But if they will make much better and juicier scenarios utilizing more of all the mechanics, physical or otherwise, along with the same kind of strong narrative, that would be tremendous. Although I am fairly skeptical of this, atleast from seeing the very expressionless characters, and the pretty uninteresting dialogues so far, and only with 10 second videos revealing each clan strictly in combat scenarios. It bodes ill for the final product. It doesn't have to be all doom and gloom, of course, but it doesn't look like a sequel to bloodlines.

I hate the Weak Names Company's come up with Lol Phyre . Ok so whats The Real Reason we cant Come Up with our Own Names , 70 Plus Rpg Games all allow us to make Our own names . This don't feel like a Real Bloodlines game . i am Starting to worry that Modern Day ideology is about to be added into Bloodlines 2 . weak woke Ideology , we need Bloodlines 2 to become a Bigger game at the Level of BG3 or Elden Ring so the Franchise can have staying Power and Grow

i hate the constant hell bent drive to make the vampire in question seem un unfeeling worthless piece of crap with no empathy it really rather sucks as i know from personal experience that if you are doing a fully fleshed out roleplay game you get to choose bad, neutral and good not to mention the crappy dumb idiotic choice to keep shelling out 1st person to cater to all you should be aloud to choose the 1st or 3rd person view so yet again free will restricting but don't get me wrong it still looks 1st rate it just has non catering aspects to all consumers that personally are a learning curb they refuse to learn from its pathetically embarrassing

Honestly Im more surprised people are still surprised about these things, like this hasnt been going on for 14 years now all over the gaming industry. Sadly this will be yet another awsome franchise being ruined for that fictional "modern global audience", which to my opinion already was obvious seeing who they brought in to replace the devs they bullied out. And of course the creative differences, which only means one thing in the current gaming space. Im glad I didnt pre orderd it. Since all signs points towards it being another generic Disney style identity politics driven monstrosity (no pun intended), and because its made by people who shouldnt be working in gaming in the first place. It sadly will be yet another beloved franchise Im going to ignore.

Baldurs gate 3 didn't spoiled us, it was a game made trough a Kickstarter. VtM.B2 had 2 huge company behind it, and this is the White Wolf most important IP and probably the most important video game release and this is the end of 2023, this game in development more then 4 years now. This conversation in the trailer looks s**t. Come on now, Cyberpunk did it better. Here just two people standing they are still as a tree, they move almost only the head, looks like robots not vampires.

BG3 was made by 400 developers and sold hundreds of thousands of units while it spent years in early access. It starting on Kickstarter doesn't make it a small game.
