Today I'm looking at what I consider the epitome of the RPG genre - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. I go over what makes the game so great, as well as some of it's issues and development troubles of it's developer, Troika Games.

I've been telling for ages that this game was the pinacle of RPG's in terms of roleplay, you know, the most important thing for an RPG. Nowdays people relate RPG's to grinding, a skill tree and a crafting system. Is it that or resurrecting the isometric old school RPG's and their walls of text. No, this is truly the high peak in terms of immersing a player into a world where the cohesion of the setting and story was the most important thing; I loved that you were forced to uphold the masquerade, most modern games confuse freedom with a lack of commitment to the rules to which the world operates. I could go on on this topic, but I thing the video did a good job explaining and my english sucks.

Something I found amazing about this game is that it truly made me feel like you were on the crossroads between the "normal world" and the "world of darkness", that you could truly see the line where the two worlds intertwine. It was an incredibly immersive experience when in between missions you'd talk with regular human beings and whatnot before heading off to a haunted hotel, or to go parlay with a gargyle. This is truly an immortal game.

I bought this game when it was new on the shelf at Electronics Boutique and I still have it in the box. It was an experience playing the unpatched version and I remember downloading Werner's patches and the drama between him and another person doing fan patches. I think the whole spat was that one of them was really altering the game and the other wanted to keep it as original as possible while fixing its many problems. Thanks for the excellent review.

Nice video. This is definitely one of the best RPGs out there. I played through it so many times back in the day. The last playthrough I did was as a Malkavian - I loved that the Malks had extra insight into some of the goings-on that you didn't get as members of other clans.

The CQ mod offerers unique quests for each clan, and TFN mod offers new clans and disciplines. Plus TFN makes the world a lot more dangerous. Good times.

Amazing video on one of my most beloved games!! I've been wanting to replay it for some time but I'm so chicken I dont want to deal with the hotel level again yet :D I first played this game at around 16 I think and I absolutely marveled at the freedom of choice and movement. I loved exploring all the buildings and finding the unusual paths to the goal. What an amazing game

The hotel level is scary. If you want to power through it, I'd suggest turning of the sound. I find that's where most of the scares come from.

Your closing statements is exactly how I feel about my all-time favorite, Star Wars: Jedi Knight Academy. It's easily the most satisfying swordplay game out there and it's a shame nobody has topped it yet. Everyone wants to streamline the experience these days. Giving freedom to the players is what made some games legendary. Anyways, I'm happy to hear that this game continues to gain support from fans. There was a mod I was dying to try years ago but, it was taking forever to finish. Wonder just how much has changed since I dropped it for other games.

@@AbuHajarAlBugatti Nostalgia? Far from it. Again, the word emphasized here is swordplay. For me, that gives me the most joy. Not story, not music, and not nostalgia. This comment is three years old. You know, there's two other games that out now that scratch that swordplay itch for me. That's Hellish Quart and Vertex. Die by the blade is getting close to being finished, inspired by the game Bushido Blade that Jedi Academy also takes inspiration from. Jedi Academy isn't perfect but, what I'm searching for is freedom in combat systems. The more freedom, the better.

This game is one of my favourite games of all time. One moment I like is when you go into the sewers section after the Hollywood part and prior to the Chinatown part, the latter is foreshadowed by this haunting singing voice that you hear in the distance. The use of sound and music to enhance the mood is very well done. Thank you for your review and dressing up as VV :P

Well... The game rights were purchased by Paradox, and they have been teasing Vampire related content. In the GDC show this month, some are expecting them to announce a sequel/remake of the game.

I've only recently found this game and it's really sad to clearly see that 70% of this creation that was well written, articulate, phenomenal recordings, music, voice acted brilliance and then the 30% that didn't know what they were doing or simply didn't care and released it "as is". This game desperately deserves a proper remake and done correctly like I'm sure the creators intended it to be. Instead of spiderman XVII re-re-re-remake, why not a quality studio have a crack at this gem.

well, that's a nice surprise. bloodlines is a game i was always curious about, but it took me a long time until i actually played it. in fact, it was patiently waiting in my gog games library until sunday, when i decided to finally give it a shot (with the unofficial patch 10.1). which, despite the flaws, aged pretty well. i was so drawn in by the story, atmosphere and characters that i couldn't put it down before i beat the spook house. and having a well presented video from pam just a day later really is the cherry on top of the bloodlines sundae. thanks!

This game best captures the Amazing White Wolf Vampire the Masquerade role playing game of the 90s, and the spirit of the 90s in general. Such an amazing game. It's a shame the White Wolf RPG seemed to go downhill later, I fear even if we got another Vampire game it wouldn't be this good.

Really great and well put together video Pam. Possibly your most complex and in-depth one yet. I was somewhat familiar with this game, just hearing about it from others. But your video really filled in a lot of the questions I had. I also didn't know about the history of it or what exactly happened during the development process, so it was nice that you included that info too. I'll have to give it a try at some point... Added to my wish list! Also, in terms of games that have the potential of living up to this one, what about CyberPunk 2077? It isn't about Vampires, but I sort of feel like it has that same sort of potential in terms of characters and world.

"Retro" actually means something new in the style of old. Shovel Knight for example, is retro. Super Mario Bros. is not retro, it's just old. Bloodlines as far as i'm concerned is neither.
