Casting no reflection is probably a reference to mirrors being made with silver backs. I can't explain newer digital cameras, but old school films were made with silver nitrate. Since this Dracula has a special relationship with silver, that is probably the cause.

Mirrors used to be made with silver behind the glass to be the reflective surface. And Photographs were developed using silver nitrate. Thats another reason they dont show up in them.

One of the most underrated vampire movies. Gerard Butler was pretty awesome as Dracula. Christopher Plummer was a good Van Helsing too. The whole cast was pretty great imo.

I actually thought Butler's performance was exceptionally lacking. For anything that didn't require an action scene he fell incredibly flat. If the movie leaned more towards the campy side of horror like the original Universal movie it would have worked better but for this? It didn't take the movie down too much though.

Love most of the lores of vampire origins. Judas in this movie, Vlad Tepes (Bram Stoker's Dracula), Cain ( Vampire the Masquerade), Akasha (The Vampire Chronicles), Walter (???)(Castlevania), Master Vampire (Dracula Untold), Markus (Underworld).

@@shilohwehrmacht2947 No not talking about the butler from that anime. In the Castlevania prequel, Lament of Innocence, the main villain was Walter Bernhard who was a vampire. But the reason I put a question mark in parenthesis is because he is chronologically the very first vampire in the whole series that we know of pre-dating Dracula who ryu stated already is Mathias. Walter is the first in the series but it was never stated that he was the very FIRST/original vampire in the Castlevania universe. Like in the other lores that I mentioned, each of those were the original and first vampire in their universe. Well technically in the Vampire Chronicles it was Akasha AND Enkil as the first vampires but you get the point. In Lament of Innocence, we don't know how Walter became a vampire. Dracula/ Mathias became a vampire after Walter was defeated and then he had Death absorb Walter's soul into the Crimson Stone.

Dracula 2000 has for many years been a staple in my movie collection, I always love those deep dark back stories, like in The Ring when Rachel's son talking about girl says "..she never sleeps", that's blood chilling information, or in Blade: Trinity when King tells the origins of Drake.

Someone in the show The Strain also used vampire blood to stay alive and healthy in order to hunt longer. It also mentions the silver in mirrors and even adds a reactive element to the mirrors when a vampire is in front of one. It's an amazing show and has amazing lore about the original vampires and their connection to each other. You should really check it out, i've been blown away watching it for the first time recently.

I really liked the way that Dracula finally was able to die in this movie. This isn't the first time that I've heard Dracula being Judas but I do think it is the movie that made the best tie-in with this chosen lore angle since it used Judas' story as Dracula's only way to truly die. Personally, I'm always a fan of the Judas identity for Dracula because it is something a lot of people already know the story of so it isn't something you have to go too into detail on; I think that Judas or Cain make the most sense for being the original vampire since both are considered monsters in their own ways in Christianity.

Dracula didnt die in this movie there are 2 sequals to this movie,in the 3rd movie he is decapitated and a priest forgives him in the name of God,but i dont think he is dead during the movie ita implied that the only way he can die is to ask God sensirely for forgiveness mening his ego is his curse only when he lets go of his ego and asks for forgiveness wil he die

That movie is based off my favorite short story, and in that short story, it explains that Abel went to heaven to live with god, but could not face his brother, his killer. So God complied. Cursed Abel with immortality to forever keep the brothers apart.

What I liked about Twilight was that there were vampires worldwide from different times and not seemingly connected to a single line. This leaves one to question what may have been happening with history.

​@@Trizzle-987 As a female vampire enthusiast who also consumned Twilight, there is actually some really great lore in this novel who unpacks the backstory of every vampire we know off in the series and every fan who's read that book is pretty much like, 'This is way more interesting then Bella and Edward are'. Like those Italian maffia vampires, the Volturi have some great political drama going on to this day because two of the leaders are hiding they killed the third leader's wife thousands of years ago which is why he's deeply depressed and they even have a vampire who has the ability to basically manipulate emotional bonds and they use her to keep the third leader emotionally hostage because otherwise he would have committed suicide a long time ago. In a reimagening the author wrote with almost everyone being genderbent, Edyth (Edward) makes a remark about a new vampire addition to the Volturi who found out the truth and as a result he killed the other two leaders and is now ruling over the vampires with their wives who had zero governing power in the original universe.

There is the theory that Vampires don't have a "reflection in a mirror" because originaly mirrors were made by coating one side of a pice of glas with silver. Similar it goes with fotos and film. Originaly those were processed with a "solution which contained silver". Finaly the first Vampires in fiction used to be vulnerable to silver because it was a "clean/holy" material. I loved how this movie connected all the dot's in this unique fashinon.

You may want to check out (and I'm trying to remember) "The Librarian and The Judas Chalice." If I remember correctly, it makes the same connection even saying that any wooden steak won't work, it had to be the same as the type of tree Judas hung himself from.

There's two vampire myths I absolutely love. This one and Vampre Masquerade. Both have religious bases. Don't know why but these two just make sense, though I do tend to lean towards Masquerade's theory a little more with Cain and Able.

I remember watching this movie when I was in elementary school. This movie was played in one of our local tv channels in Indonesia. At the end of the movie I was hoping it would have a sequel since we all know that Marry still has Dracula's blood in her & was partly a vampire though not bitten... 😢 it still upsets me since we can't see any of Marry's journey/struggles living as a half vampire in any of its sequels since they don't exist! 😭

A unique vampire film is The Hunger. The vampires in that one are daywalkers and lack fangs. They use knives to cut their victims open to feed. They must sleep many hours per day and kill one victim a week. The main vampire in that film is a woman. However her vampirism has unfortunate side effects on her lovers later. Would love for you to do that film. Keep up the good work.

This is a highly underrated film about the Dracula mythos. I too enjoyed the tie to Judas Iscariot. The arching themes of this film and Dracula’s invulnerability due to God Himself condemning him to walking Earth forever made a great deal of sense. It’s a shame critics at the time could not grasp the nuances.

Well, one of the buddies was this death metal cannibal corpse kinda kid, and at the end when Dracula died, he stood up and screamed, "nooooooo!" I feel like the crosses stop him from repairing himself and basically makes him "mortal" in a sense. The coffin was silver which hurts him, the leeches keep him from having the amount of his blood needed for repairs and regeneration, the crosses are another way to stop him from regaining consciousness and repair after he was subdued by Vanhelsing. The ending to me was.... God had already forgiven him, he just needed to forgive himself and stand in the light.

There are 2 sequels, the second one is okay, but it also negates the end of 2000, so I enjoy the second one as it's own kind of Dracula movie and not actually connected with this and the third one, awful, don't do it. Odd question, is the vampire myth that they aren't reflected in mirrors or that they have no reflection? Would they have a reflection in a puddle? Mirrors makes sense in a way, since historically mirrors were backed by silver coating behind the glass to make them reflective.

It’s because mirrors used to be made out of silver, and since it was considered pure, a vampire would not cast a reflection. It’s be cool if somebody tried the mirror trick on a vampire, only for it to be a modern mirror, so they cast a reflection. Then the hunter looks at a silver platter, and realizes he can’t see the vampire in that!

I always found it (and its two sequels) to be a fun ride. Once again, I suggest BBC's Young Dracula. It's interesting in that the type of narrative matures as the characters do.

That's why they originally didn't have reflections or appear in photo. So, this is why soulless individuals didn't have a reflection or appear in photos before the digital age. Also remember, the original source for vampires comes from Revenants. Revenants were ghosts that could reinhabit their bodies and escape their graves in a misty form. However, Revenants were not burned by sunlight its just made them inert or dormant. Revenants fed on blood because ancient Greco-Roman beliefs stated that life-force or vitae was in the blood. From there, novels from Polidori to Le Fanu to Stoker is where the vampire we know was born.

I suspect that this version of Dracula is actually some type of higher form of a poltergeist spirit. Spirits are usually vanquished using holy objects and/ or some kind of ritual. We know about the holy objects. The specific way that he had to be killed can also be considered to be a ritual as well. Also it seems that anyone he turns can be physically killed while Dracula cannot be killed by any normal means. My guess is that new vampires still have a physical body but because Dracula’s body has decayed, to the point of no longer existing over the centuries, there is no body to be harmed. This would explain why he has powers of teleportation, shape shifting, etc. while newer vampires powers are limited because the bodies that demonic entities have taken possession of still exist. Just a theory. This was actually one of my favored depictions of the vampire lore. Good video. Keep up the good work.

I remember seeing this in the cinema with my brothers and their friends. I really liked the different take on his origins and why silver and crosses effect them. Some of the effects where really cool at the time yes it might have some parts that didn't age as well as others but its still a good movie. Its always cool to see a new take on dracula or vampires in general.

Vampire weaknesses like: crosses, garlic, silver, stakes and sunlight are somewhat misunderstood in pop culture. In folklore, sunlight does not kill Vampires. Neither does garlic and stakes. Putting garlic in the mouth of a corpse and nailing it to the coffin with stakes was believed to prevent it to become a Vampire. I'm not sure about the origin of crosses and silver.

@@DesignIncase Indeed. Vampires from folklore were more like Zombies that fed on blood. There's actually a movie called *The Revenant* from 2009. In this movie, the protagonist becomes a Vampire that is more akin to folklore.

The reason the vampires didn't show in mirrors is because we used silver to line the mirrors of the older glass mirrors You can also find small mirrors that are just highly polished silver without glass.
