Curse of Fenric is set during WW2, and one of the characters is a fictional version of Alan Turing - the creator of the "Enigma Machine", which was used to crack coded German radio messages. In this story, the Russians are attempting to steal that machine. However, the allied forces are expecting this turn of events, and they fear that the Russians will no longer be 'allies' once the Germans are defeated, so they packed the machine with chemical weapons and are waiting for it to be stolen. Once WW2 is over and the time is right, they will send a specific word in a cypher, and once that word is decoded by the machine, it will unleash chemical hell in Russia. While waiting for the Russians to arrive, the camp has been using the machine to decrypt Viking symbols beneath a local crypt. These symbols have been left behind by descendants of vikings who carried a 'treasure' from the East -- a flask, which the Doctor used to contain "Fenric" many centuries ago. Fenric is an old god -- the definition of evil -- and it is manipulating events behind the scenes to unleash itself. According to the Doctor, the "vampires" (haemovores) are what mankind will turn into after centuries of industrial progress, causing the earth to be covered in chemical slime, and forcing them to live underwater. Unknown to everyone BUT the Doctor, if the machine explodes or the haemovores unleash the chemicals stored in the underground bunker, they will create their own future -- because the substances will infect the world and cause mankind to live underwater in this timeline. Despite being a very "English" show, and despite the Russians trying to steal from their allies, it is the naval Commander who is represented as the antagonist for wanting to unleash chemical weapons. The Russians (eventually) work with the Doctor, and even join forces with the naval deserters (once people realize what the Commander was up to and/or the real threat of vampiric monsters). As a result, the Russians are shown in a much more positive light compared to the Brits, which is quite refreshing.

No, it is nothing more than faith; earlier the Doctor fend soff the vampires with his own faith: his faith in his companions. He tells the Russian soldier that only absolute faith will do - but it can be faith in anything.

the funny thing is that he wears this cockade on his chest, although it is a cockade, i.e. it is worn on a headdress. In addition, it is a post-war cockade of tank troops and aviation (they were considered elite and to show this, they even had a golden wreath on their everyday cockade).
