Alright, the forces of chaos, the vampires, hidden family-line plots of certain elector count dynasties, the tomb kings, the dark elves, and the ROUSes (though I don't believe they exist) are ALL plotting long-game cons to rule mankind behind Karl's back. I get this hilarious image in my head of all of them employing their final master stroke at once and undoing each other perfectly leaving the empire of man both unscathed and unaware what was even happening.

One hilarious thing that always happens in my Mortal Empires Campaign as the Empire is that Khalida always Joins the Empire, Brettonia and the Dwarves after the Vampires and Chaos have already been defeated after piggy backing off of one another, In a Total War Perspective its very predictable but from a Lore perspective its really hilarious, imagine an Undead Tomb King (Queen in this case) just Randomly calls the Big Three for a meeting and they just heard about all this drama, comming from a Thousand Year old Mummy that they just found out was a thing.

Vampires have easily the most potential for deep and interesting characters in my opinion, its very telling that the setting "ends" with Neferata, Isabella and Khalida all sort of sitting together and realizing how petty they've been, and say what you will about the end times that really stuck with me, that these creatures that live forever are also incredibly prone to waste that time on their schemes and petty power plays, rather than actually doing something productive. There's so much room to explore how they interact with humanity, be it cruel or just like the other counts of the empire, or the nobility of figures like the mythical founder of the blood knights. To me they're easily the most interesting faction.

My personal favourite is that Vlad was arguably the nicest claimant to the mantle of Emperor at the time of the first Vampire War. Sure, he was a ruthless tyrant... but basically all the mortal elector counts that were having a civil war over the title at the time were *worse* rulers than him. Vlad at least did actually give a shit about the living commoners under his rule, even if it was just out of a sense of duty and noblesse oblige. It really says something that for the sylvanian peasants his time was arguably the best couple decades in the entire history of the place, from the days of Sigmar all the way to those of Karl Franz. Fuck Mannfred, tho. Just absolutely fuck that shithead.

The classic villain of the fantasy genre. And always entertaining to see how they're portrayed. Some strange cross of an animalistic long lived human, creates some very unique stories. And they make great "strange bedfellows" or faustian bargains for heroic characters. Like a corrupted reflection of humanity. And in many cases they're shown as quite beautiful creatures too, not a lot of villains can say the same. Many hollywood tropes push the villains as always being "ugly" or "stupid" or "thuggish". But Vampires sort of rise above that. Sometimes anyways. And their well known immortality means they can just keep coming back.

I think they understate the influence of the Von Carstien's on the ordinary folk. The mostly supported their vampire lords who governed fairly and asked very little of their subjects, especially with low taxes, allowing peasants to live relatively pleasant lives despite the obvious corruption. Yeah, you might have to give up someone every few decades from your village but in return, you get a relatively comfy life for a peasant and the assured protection of sentinels that never sleep. No marauding warbands of beastmen or norse, no harsh taxes that barely leave you with anything to eat and no threat of a witch hunter burning your whole village because you celebrated festag a little too enthusiastically.

To a degree, yes. While having to only worry about the one inhuman, bloodthirsty monster squatting in the nearby ruined castle instead of thousands of inhuman, bloodthirsty monsters squatting in the forest is something that can be considered a sweet deal by the standards of the setting, that doesn’t change the fact that life in Sylvania sucks just as hard as it does pretty much everywhere else. The living standard for Sylvania is Early Middle Ages, while the rest of Not-Europe is High Middle Ages or Renaissance level of development. There is no middle class in Sylvania, no skilled artisans, merchants, or educated professionals. Even _Bretonnia_ has an emergent bourgeoisie; in Sylvania the only career options for people possessing a pulse are ‘impoverished, starving farmer’, ‘impoverished, starving goat and/or sheep herder’, and ‘impoverished, starving ox-cart operator’. Everyone is filthy, malnourished, in terrible health, and some degree of inbred. There’s no hope of anything getting better, no way life will end in any way other than ‘perform backbreaking labor until you keel over from exhaustion’, except for ‘eaten alive by beasts’ or ‘became a Capri-Sun for the asshole in the castle.’

@@changelingman9687 Neither do many of the vampires form the Warhammer world. They are usually weakened by daylight, but they don't, for the most part, instantly burst into flames. The phenomenon is supposed to be some form of psychosomatic magical effect in the lore - what the vampire believes about itself tends to manifest in its own body, so if it expects to burn in sunlight, it does. If it expects to be scalded by holy symbols, it is, but if it doesn't hold those beliefs, it is highly resistant or wholly immune to those weaknesses. Most Warhammer world vampires expect to be weaker in daylight, gaining their full strength only in darkness, and so that is the way it plays out.

Warhammer; the Old World has already been announced a couple of years ago, and we have even seen some concept art for the stuff they are planning to release for it, mostly of the Kislevite faction that is very much in line with the Total War Warhammer interpretation of that army. It seems likely it will function like the Horus Heresy stuff has with regard to 40K - a parallel game system set earlier in the in-universe timeline, and using a revamped (if you will forgive the pun) version of an earlier ruleset, probably an updated version of the old Eighth Edition Warhammer Fantasy rules.

My favorite vampire blood line has to be the lords of the former strigos empire known as the strigoi. The kings of the ghouls. These creatures take beastial muscled Bat-like forms and have strength that rivals even the blood dragons. The company they keep are their loyal noble court even if the denizens of that court are hordes of feral ghouls and crypt horrors. They are capable of mounting the dreaded terrorguiest who's death curdling shrieks herald the arrival of both them and their dreaded strigoi rider.

You still have to deal with the unending urge for blood which if you don’t drink, you will be driven insane and turn more and more bestial. Becoming a vampire also takes a person’s worst flaws, and dials it up even when they were honourable or good natured, turning you more cruel and twisted.

This was an amazing video but I can't help but feel that Vampires are taking over Halloween a bit. I mean, I get it. Vampires are the peak of undead most of the time and with all the legends surrounding them they're great for all kind of fictions, especially when you can have "bloodlines" that reflect each famous vampiric legend. Vampire: the Masquerade was my first tabletop game after all. Still I feel that we are overlooking great monsters. From the witches that planned to turn children into mice and had an... Unfortunate reboot; to monsters that lurk in the void between planets like the Xenophorm.

Been a diehard 40k fan since 07 but I've been wanting to get into Fantasy lately and I'm not sure where to start. Two questions: Is there a baseline series like the Heresy? Are the Tomb Kings as cool as they look?

There is no Warhammer Fantasy book series that is as big as the Horus Heresy which has like 60+ books iirc, but there is the Gotrek & Felix series which is the recommended series for beginners into WHFB lore. You also have a bunch of trilogies in the form of Black Library Warhammer Chronicles omnibuses detailing important events and characters. Such as The Legend of Sigmar, Rise of Nagash, The Sundering etc.
