Van Conversion NEW PAINT JOB IN TIJUANA MEXICO 🇲🇽Restoring a 1990 Chevy G20 Sport VAN

See the back story of how I found this hunk of junk 1990 Chevy Sport Van conversion on craigslist for 1500$. It was in terrible condition after being lived in, neglected and towed. I have dropped about 2000$ under the hood to make it survive burning man 2018 & burning man 2019.

In this video I take you on a journey all the way to Tijuana Mexico on a mission to have my ugly Chevrolet Van conversion painted. It’s a particularly interesting time to have work done on the car because we are going through the pandemic. In The past my van was so ugly it always received complaints and it was even towed from outside my own front door after 72 hours costing me $900 to get back. I had to get this van looking beautiful and not like a hunk of junk.
In California it’s nearly impossible to get your car painted because of all the environmental fees and taxes this paint job And cosmetic damage would cost 5x with the van is probably worth to repair.
My first thought was to do that paint job myself. After grinding on a corner at the car with the sanding block for days I realize I was ill-equipped and unskilled for the difficult task at hand
So We journey to Tijuana Mexico and find superior auto body. They fully restored the outside of my Chevy Van exactly the way I asked them to total cost for this job was under $1000. My van is almost unrecognizable from its original rusty red stripe form

I don't think the majority of the public understands how much these 70s-90s conversion vans are a gem in the 2020's now. I learned to drive on the clay dirt backgroads of northeast georgia in a 79 lowtop conversion van with a 318. It instilled in me the love of driving big vehicles. On long road trips i used to pull out the bed, but sleep UNDER the pull-out part. It was like a cozy hidey hole. Now, I drive a used smartcar because basically i'm broke and just needed something very fuel efficient and reliable. it does the job, but I really want a conversion van!

looks good. just need to get some black wheels like your spare on all 4 corners and it will look even better. One of first things I upgrade any of my cars if it doesn't have it is get some projector headlights with HID bulbs. Looks better and you get even greater lighting. I have a Honda Pilot with white flaking paint, so one day I'm gonna take it to Tijuana to get it repainted. I'm almost done paying it off so it will have to wait a bit. I'm actually trying to get a Honda S2000 for a daily driver since the Pilot is kind of a gas guzzler for every day driving. I went to my first Burn last year after years of wanting to go and had a blast. I work lots of music festivals for the past 10 yrs and have been in the scene even longer, so I don't know why it took me forever to finally go. Not going this year since I'm flying to Mexico in a week and will be staying down in Oaxaca for the Summer.

I have that same body style Chevy G20 mines a 1991 the inside looks brand new it’s got tv VCR/Gaming, it’s got nice lights all thru it, it’s for a wine cooler it’s a badass can I love these old Chevy vans they look so cool & I love driving it them! Mine doesn’t have any rust & 0 dents no body damage whatsoever! I’m getting it painted here in about a month, I’m going with either dove gray, or the new army green color they have out on these new cars, my van has the 5.7l motor & it runs great low miles, I can’t wait until my van is painted hell yea boy!

So it’s been roughly 2 1/2 years and the paint job still looks very good. One place I can be critical is that they weren’t able to get some of the rust that was up by the front windshield and it started to slightly rust through again. I don’t fault them on this though because I think they would’ve had to remove/ replace the glass in order to fully sand the rust out in that area. I will probably be going down for touchups this year or next. Because this video got so much traction I’m sure my touchups will be very cheap if anything. The people at this shop are like family to me now

I recently was thinking of taking my 2002 Buick Regal to Mexico to get a new paint job. I know most people wouldn't normally pay for a paint job for a 2002 Buick Regal but this one is special. I had just purchased it about a year ago from the original owner who had ordered it from the Buick dealership here in El Paso. The car was in mint condition that's until somebody hit my wife last spring. Surprisingly cars back then were built tough because not much happened to the Buick that wasn't the same story for the Mustang that hit her, it was completely totaled. Well anyway I feel horrible that this perfectly looking car with only 22 original miles looks like the Hulk smashed the hood and pumper. Finding parts was actually surprisingly easy. I ended up spending about $150 on a new hood bumper and Fender now the problem is that the front doesn't match the rest of the car so I have been considering getting it painted. My first thought was to possibly just go through Maaco but the quality work is always a hit or miss. There's a couple of good shops across the border in Cd Juárez that quoted me $800 which isn't too bad the thing is that I really want to make sure the paint matches the rest of the car.

I took my truck to this shop to get it painted. They took the gas tank off to remove the bed and didn't put it back properly. The tank fell off while driving and got stuck under the truck. I had to get it towed to my home. I called the shop and told Marco what happened and instead of apologizing he blocked my number. What a scumbag. Don't take your car here they will damage your car and then block you

I had my mustang done in TJ once upon a time....They did ok work....2999.000 for paint, vinyl top carpet...Can't go wrong at that price so what the heck!! It's not great, it's ok....Drivers paint job for sure....Im not sure the 16 grand that ALL US painters were quoting would be worth it...You can see that work on KZbin at My 1970 Mustang Grande....

They did not replace the weatherstripping. I also need that done on mine after a few decades it dries out and flakes away. They said if I bought the stripping and brought it to them they would apply it... The street is also filled with mechanic shops that do different types of work many specify interior

They sanded down the entire thing and patched it all up, it looked really clean. Hopefully they treated the rust since patching it up is a temporary fix

Probably slightly higher than when I got it in 2020 it all depends on the size of your vehicle and how much work needs to be done. I paid a little under 1000 for all this work on my van.

Getting a van done in Mexico would probably cost 2000$ to $3000 before but these guys hooked it up for me.. If you’re from California like I am it’s basically impossible to get a car painted because of all the environmental fees a body shop told me I was better off taking it to Arizona I chose Tijuana

I'm just excited for the future build of your interior lay out. You don't need to spend much on it. I think you can do it yourself. Just an L- shape design. A bed at the back done in plywood and you can buy a vanity table with drawers as your kitchen counter placed at the back of the driver's side and that's it. You can use the van for your weekend vacations or when you have upcoming shows (as a fire artist) outside your state.

This van was a big job so it took a about a week. Small cars probably done faster depending how busy they are. There are hotels on the same street as the shop but I don’t know if that’s the safest area at night. I always stay in Rosarito beach about 15 miles south from Tijuana. It’s a lovely town You’ll probably run into a lot of American baby boomers down there

I think they do only cosmetic and body work but their are lots of mechanics on this street. Most of them you need to bring the parts and they do the labor . I had suspension work done on an old civic they did great

Do you know whether or not they may have possibly had a name change because I even used the street name you used in your directions on the little map ("Superior Auto Body...") & still it's not populating anything under that name.

Do you know if I can tow a vehicle there to get painted, it's current registration etc but has body damage and trunk won't close.
